Gear The most under-rated boost pedal — EHX LPB3

I have a sick, unhealthy obsession with boost pedals.

My collection includes many Tubescreamer variants, including excellent pedals by boutique brands like Lichtlaerm.

But the EHX LPB3 is one of my favorites.

And it's barely mentioned.

Pre-gain. Boost.

AND PARAMETRIC MIDS.

I stopped boosting my upper mids and instead select lower mids, then reduce them.

It's so clean and precise.

Which is funny, as EHX are famous for loose, chaotic pedals.

Essentially the perfect controls for a boost pedal, IMO.

(Although Lichtlaerm's famous 4-band EQ is also excellent.)

Have you tried it?

Question Time to Choose

Hello guys. This is last time im asking this question. After some years im going back to play guitar. Last time i was using a Jackson Pro dk2. It was beautiful but because of the college and full time job i didnt have time to play. Now my wife wants to buy a guitar for me and wants me to choose. So this guitar must be something for live ( im planing the upgrade the guitar in time) I have 4 options and actually i dont really want something black. And budget is like 500-600€. Spira guitars looks great but buying a chines guitar for this guitar is a question mark. (They can look good and sound good) At this point gold detailed schecter is the greatest choice for me but what u guys think? If you have any of these guitars do you recommend? Lastly im a lefty 😅

Guitar set-up for crowbar

I'd like to get into playing crowbar on guitar. I can play a little guitar, nothing fancy, I'll figure the tabs out. However, I just have an 80s Japanese strat and a crappy crackling champion amp.

So not only does Crowbar play some songs really tuned down, (standard G or something?) someone told me I would need a different guitar for this. One that takes thicker strings that can be tuned down way more.

What would a minimal set-up look like for playing crowbar? Like guitar, strings pedals?

How do you memorize parts in complex extreme metal?

I was playing along to some Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun album on Songsterr, and holy cow! The parts themselves are manageable but the songs are just packed full of unique riffs with very little repetition and zero predictable structure. How on earth does a person memorize all the parts and arrangements in complex music like this?

A similar thing happens when I try to play along with death metal like Malevolent Creation, Gorguts or Deicide for example. Just all sorts of random weird time signature transitions, zero logical structure and many riffs.

Is it one of those things where it's just easier to remember when it's your own music you wrote or are there any tricks to it?

Should i switch from Valeton Gp 5 for better tone?

Upvotes

I bought the Valeton Gp 5 5 month ago and i liked it very, but didn't like , that you always have to open the app to change your tone or something. I also think that the 5150 model dont sounds like the real one. I'm mainly looking for metalcore tones and this amp model is very important i guess.(I'm not that into the game but i always struggle finding the tone of 2005 metalcore like Trivium or BfmV and in the most tutorials they use 5150) My question is, how different the Gp 200 is in comparison to the Gp5. Is the tone better or just the options? If it isnt better, what would be the decision to make to get a good metal sounding multi fx pedal?

Thanks for your help🙏🙏🙏

Question How do I get this song up to full speed?

I have a show coming up in a few weeks and there’s one song I really need to be able to play cleanly by then. There’s really fast alternate picking throughout most of the song and I can play it at 90% speed and it’s mostly there but still a little sloppy. 100% speed is a different beast tho. What would be the best way to practice this so I can get it up to 100% speed?

Any practice routines or techniques or advice would be very appreciated.

Action vs height

Post image

I've read that lower actions reduce the sound quality. I was installing a new tremolo bar and inadvertently lowered it so low the frets slightly buzz when unplugged. Not sure if I'm imagining it, but it seemed a like a pretty big difference in lower sound quality when I plugged it in. Has anyone played around with this and noticed a huge reduction in quality? Enough to play with a higher action, even if it's not as nice playing?

Jackson BE

I’m not a fan of Kelly shape guitars or explorers but I am big on Jackson right now. There’s is something about this Brandon Ellis Kelly that makes me believe I need to have it. There’s more I see it the more it grows on me.

Any opinions on this one specifically? Shorter scale at 25.1, and BE custom bridge pick up. The finish with the maple fretboard is soooo freakin sick🤤. I need it.

Looking for some advice on practice and songwriting.

Post image

Hey guys I’m looking for some advice on how I can structure myself in learning how to write my own melodeath songs. I’ve been playing guitar for a long time but am essentially all self taught apart from a few online lessons here and there so my music theory is awful for as long as I’ve been playing. My technique is decent and I can learn full songs from tabs, I’m just terrible at writing my own music. Ex, I can write riffs but have a hard time complimenting a chord progression with it.

My favorite genre has always been melodic deathmetal, bands like in flames, at the gates, dark tranquility, children of bodom are some of my favorite bands and biggest inspiration to pick up the guitar. The riffs are gut punching and the leads and harmony are gorgeous. Someone recently gave me some advice saying if you want to really learn how to make the music you want, dive into the bands that inspire you and figure out what they’re actually doing theory wise, the scales they’re playing, the intervals they target in the leads, etc.

So here I am asking for advice that someone way more educated than I am can hopefully point me in the right direction about how to structure my practice around eventually writing the music I want to.

Gear Something a little more proper for here. 1996 Jackson KE3

Here’s something a little more proper than the Dunable’s I posted a few back. Though they are amazing instruments there’s something about the golden era of Jackson’s even the mid tier Made in Japan models.

This is a 1996 first year KE3 that was originally in a trans black but looked more like a brown. We also redid the back for a more uniform look, the black is a fine metallic black that is similar to the paint that was on the previous XL models. These don’t have a neck plate, but but use the bodies from the previous XL model and also features a metallic silver Jackson logo and “Professional” that is stock and something I haven’t seen in later models, we only sprayed the body and back of the neck and left the face of the headstock stock with a faux binding.

Question Switching from passive to active pickups

Ive been wanting to switch from the passive pickups in my Spira S450 TPP to active EMGs, specifically the 81x and 85x with the solderless kit but i dont know how much work thatll be and i dont know if its fully solderless and i cant find any video about it so here i am. I have no soldering iron so if i have to solder something id have to go to a guitar tech. I have all of the rest of the tools id need besides the soldering iron. If you have any kind of knowledge i dont, feel free to help me out.

Update: i have found a soldering iron i can use, my grandfather would give it to me for free since he doesnt need it anymore and id probably need it in the future so that problem is solved
