Old Map I made a Wordle for dating old maps (guess the year from redacted historical maps)
Hi guys! I wanted to get better at dating old maps so I made a game for it: https://datetheglobe.jenniferjiangkells.com
It’s reverse-wordle style, where every wrong guess gives you the direction (too early/too late), temperature (within 2/9/24 years), and a piece of evidence that contradicts or narrows down the year (e.g. a country that didn’t exist yet). Maps are sourced from the public domain with the year redacted. It’s basically a gamified version of this xkcd chart.
My wife and I made it to play ourselves and have been really enjoying it. We shared it around some smaller map subreddits to get feedback and now want to share it with the wider community.

Data Map How discriminatory is your country compared Argentina?
This map compares perceptions of equal treatment between people from different ethnic groups across countries. Countries closer to green show a higher perceived level of equal treatment, while countries closer to red show a higher perceived level of discrimination.
It should not be interpreted as a definitive ranking of the “most racist countries.” It measures one specific perception and does not fully capture institutional racism, racial violence, employment discrimination, segregation or economic inequality.
Social-media narratives can also differ sharply from systematic research. Algorithms tend to reward outrage, repetition and conflict, while communities such as Reddit can become echo chambers where popular claims are repeated without checking the underlying data.
Does the result for your country match your own experience?

Question Based on countries I have been to, guess which one I am from
I must say, I would consider myself well-travelled, so it might be tough to guess it. I am curious to know if it was possible to guess it just by the map.

Data Map Projected Shifts in Arabica Coffee Growing Viability by 2050 [OC] [Interactive]
maps.sarkoa.comTo determine the environmental niche of Arabica coffee, I intersected datasets using the following params:
Climate (from WorldClim V1 (Bio)):
- Annual Mean Temp (18°C - 22°C),
- Annual Precipitation (1200mm - 3000mm),
- Coldest Month Minimum (≥ 5°C),
- Driest month rainfall ≤ 120mm.
Terrain and Soil Chemistry (from USGS SRTM 30m and OpenLandMap H2O Digital Soil Mapping):
- Elevation (≥ 600m),
- Slope (2° to 30°),
- Soil pH (5.0 - 6.5)
For modelling future conditions I used the NASA NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 global dataset using a 5-year average from 2048 to 2052, using the MIR0C6 model and SSP245 pathway (middle-of-the-road emissions scenario)
Dataset processing was done in Google Earth Engine
Full disclosure: Sarkoa is my side-project I've been building for the last few months to easily host my interactive maps.

Current Map Times a country has come 2nd in the World Cup
Reaching the FIFA World Cup final is one of football's greatest achievements, but only one team can lift the trophy.
Following the 2026 World Cup, Argentina has now finished as runners-up four times (1930, 1990, 2014 and 2026), matching Germany for the most runner-up finishes in tournament history.
The Netherlands hold another unique record: they have reached three World Cup finals without ever lifting the trophy. Meanwhile, Brazil's 1950 runner-up finish came in the only World Cup that did not feature a traditional final, with the champion instead decided through a final group stage. The decisive Uruguay–Brazil match effectively served as the tournament's final, and Brazil is officially recognized as the runner-up.

Question Countries in common usage?
Hi all,
I’m making a geography game with my kids. The game involves a map interface and finding a mystery country each day. We’re trying to figure out a good list of countries “in common usage” to use as our pool of countries, but it seems there’s some ambiguity around the subject. Is there a good definitive list somewhere? For example, by some accounts the UK is a country and Scotland is part of it, but to me clearly Scotland is a country, so I’d want to include it in the pool.
Also, how do you think politically contentious countries should be treated? The point of the game is to educate, so I’m hoping to be somewhat creative here rather than just including and excluding places. Thoughts?
The current version of the game is at www.locabulary.fun if that helps for context.

Question Interactive map to trace the movements of historical figures?
I figure this is the place to ask this question. I want a map service where I can place a location of a historical figure, then add details such as duration, purpose, draw lines, and even linking to other actions would be great. Is there such a map service? Many thanks.

Data Map "They" Visual String Map
I came across this simple string map visualization a few years ago and I'm trying to find it now.
What it provided was names of the wealthiest / powerful people in the united states. You click on the name and it would then show a spoke diagram of all of the boards or companies, groups that they were affiliated with and then it extended for example by the board they were on.
If you clicked it, it would then list the other executive board members, by name. You could chose another name and then it woudl increase the map.. Anyone know the name of the website?
