Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know
What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?
Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.
Why Is This Happening?
- Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
- Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
- Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.
Can You Prevent This From Happening?
No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.
What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?
- Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
- Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
- Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
- Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
- Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.
While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.
What Is The Deadline For These Changes?
You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Alternatives and Solutions
- Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
- Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Go to the Timeline section.
- Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
- Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
- Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

Weather on the way?
We are about to drive 500km. It is easy to get the weather at our start point and at our destination, but what about on the way? I will drive about 500km this weekend and pass through at least two other weather districts.
Normal weather is not a big issue when you are in a car, but some weather like fog and storms can be quite interesting and sometimes worth avoiding (hail, high winds, flash floods).

Help/Support Can I target locations on Meta Ads using latitude and longitude?
I'm a performance marketer for a retail company. We open around 10 new stores every week across the country.
For each new store, I have to create a Reach/Engagement campaign and target people within a certain radius of that location. The problem is that I have to manually search for each store on the map and adjust the pin until it's close enough. Doing this for 10+ stores every week takes a lot of time.
Is there any faster way to do this? Can Meta Ads use latitude/longitude directly, or is there another workflow or tool you guys use to speed this up?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

WhatsApp Links on Businesses, But Invalid
I've been noticing in Berlin that lots of businesses now have WhatsApp on the profile but when I try to use it, it says that there is no WhatsApp for that number ("Invite to Whatsapp").
And this field isn't editable.
What to do? Huge bug?

I caught myself doing this today.
Didn't even have plans.
Just randomly checked how long it would take to drive somewhere.
Closed the app.
Carried on with my day 😭
Why am i like this?

Discussion "BUS STOP CLOSED!!!" Thanks, which one though??!
Just the other day, I was trying to get from point A to point B in central London, and searched on google maps how to get there, and it recommended multiple routes (as always, obviously), but this time, at the very top, i could see a red alert saying:
"⚠️ No service ... Information ... Bus Stop Closed. Please use the next stop or the previous stop to catch your bus
Effective 21 Apr 2026 - 31 Dec 2027
Updated now • Source: tfl.gov.uk"
Now, here's the thing: How ON EARTH am I supposed to tell which stop specifically it is referring to?! The different bus routes it suggested did not begin at the same stop, so how can i tell?! So, i clicked on each and every individual route to figure out which bus stop was closed... well, I couldn't find anything, because there was no "No service" warning in the details of any of those routes.
Am i just stupid, or is it Google Maps that is badly designed??!
Plus, I've been making similar searches from near point A towards point B for the last 6 weeks, and this was the first time I saw this. If this bus stop closure happened in Apr, why did it never tell me until yesterday? And btw, i made the same search again today, and the warning is gone :))

Removing special characters from my address.
My address has special characters, specifically: ī and ū. When it auto fills my address from my Google account, most web sites make me remove and replace with i and u. Ideally I would like my saved address to not have the special characters. When I try to set my address without, it changes it to add them back in. How do I get around this?

Discussion Removed reviews
Hi all
What´s your way to deal with removed maps reviews?
I had a 2* review for a lokal restaurant (2 years old) that was recently removed. How to deal with that?
No, nothing “bad”, just reality. A bit pricy, not very friendly. The remove about 30%, no review wit 2* or less.
What should I do?

Help/Support Why are my Factual and Helpful Edits not Being Accepted?
I’m a local guide, and have lots of highly viewed reviews etc.
Occasionally if there’s a really glaring error I will make an edit and provide proof, and almost none of them have been accepted.
Two examples:
- The McDonald’s on San Pablo in Oakland says the store is open 5am-2am. I was sent there for a survey job at 5am and had to stand outside for an hour. I took a picture of the sign on the door which clearly says 6am-10pm for the lobby and added it as proof to the edit, but my edit was not accepted.
-A Blink charging station listed on Google Maps was no longer owned by Blink when I got there. I took a picture of the EVerge sign and made the edit, and my edit was not accepted.
Both of these edits were factual and actually important to prevent people from a fair amount of inconvenience. Did I do anything wrong? Why deny them?

I requested to have my house blurred in 2007. After almost 20 years, the entire street is still stuck with old street view images from 2007 or earlier.
I requested to have my house blurred in 2007. After almost 20 years, the entire street is still stuck with old street view images from 2007 or earlier.
The adjacent streets(beyond the stop signs) are all up to day with street view images from January 2026 or later.
I feel so bad becasue I actually don't live at that address anymore... but I just looked it up. My blurring request from almost 20 years obviously caused this.
Is there absolutely no way to un-blur this?

Sutton Brothers... EXCELS IN PERSONNEL AND PRODUCTS!
In April 2026 we began having problems with our 20 plus year old HVAC.. Our company at that time had become undependable and frequently showed us rusted parts to prove that we needed a new system. Needless to say I was not fond of the company as far as integrity and dependability. We started looking around and asking people about their companies. Sutton Brothers name kept coming up. So we contacted Sutton to check out our system and give us a price for a new system if needed. The technician that looked over our system gave us an estimate for repair or a new system. So we went with the new system. We have not regretted our decision since . Sutton Brothers' business model, personnel, reputation, etc. are unbelievable. We have had no issues with our new unit until this month ( July).....we would set the temperature and it would cool our house to three degrees below. I called Sutton and spoke with Lisa (another very personable and professional staff member) and explained the problem. She quickly sent a technician by the name of Mark to check. He arrived slightly earlier than he was supposed to have come .He was so personable, knowledgeable ,and patient to explain how this 3° differential occurred and how to correct it which he did in less than an hour. I am glad that we are one of Sutton's clients and have no doubts that we will continue to be given good service and good will from this company. So if someone is reading this review and needs a new HVAC system or any of the other listed services ....consider Sutton where integrity professionalism, and value and care for their clients are still very important to them. SUCH A RARE TRAIT TO ENCOUNTER IN THIS WORLD! Debbie Cooper

What’s going on with bookmarks and lists
So, basically, since a couple of weeks ago (aprox) you can’t save a place into a list.
Now is bookmarked and then you can save it.
What’s the issue? Every time I save a new place, I get a new bookmark on my map. Which is really annoying because you can’t hide it.
Am I going to have 200 bookmarks in my map instead of things on a list that I can hyde in a few months?
Come on Google :(

GPS users, stop reporting police on road unless it's an actual speed trap.
99% of the time It asks me "Are the police still there?" I'm pressing No. Most of these reports are:
Police already pulled someone over, they're not gonne be paying attention to your speed.
Police actively driving down the highway. Seriously? By the time anyone gets to the mark on the map, the cop is another quarter mile further down the road.
An empty police car that has their lights on for awareness in a construction zone ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE, ffs.

Something is going on
These links have wrong images from November 2008
I did research and these are the CORRECT image locations.
Do you know a possible reason for why this may be happening? Why are they intentionally putting wrong images elsewhere on purpose? At least it's not vice versa and they got the date right.

Would you use an app that bridges Google Maps directly to Uber/Ola/Rapido without searching the destination again?
I've been thinking about building a small Android utility app and wanted to validate whether this solves a real problem or if I'm missing something.
Current workflow for me is usually:
Search a place in Google Maps.
Decide I want to take a cab.
Exit Maps.
Open Uber/Ola/Rapido.
Search for the exact same destination again.
Finally book the ride.
My idea is a lightweight app that acts as a bridge between Google Maps and ride-hailing apps.
The flow would be:
Google Maps → Share/Open With → RideBridge → Choose Uber/Ola/Rapido → Ride app opens with the destination (and pickup, if supported) already filled in.
The app wouldn't handle bookings or payments. It would simply:
Parse the Google Maps link/location.
Detect installed ride apps.
Use official deep links/APIs (where supported).
Open the selected ride app with as much information prefilled as officially possible.
A few questions:
Is this something you would actually use?
Does Google Maps or any ride-hailing app already provide this workflow that I may have missed?
Are there any Android limitations or provider restrictions I should know about?
If you've built something similar, what were the biggest technical challenges?
What additional features would make this utility genuinely useful while keeping it simple?
I'm trying to keep it as a lightweight "do one thing well" utility rather than another ride-booking app. I'd appreciate any feedback before I start building it.

Merging lists / adding one list to another
I have a list named "Rio de Janeiro - restaurants" and another one "Rio de Janeiro". How can I merge the first list with the second without going to each saved location of the first and saving it in the second?

Help/Support history not saving in Maps- Android
I've been using Maps for years, currently using a Pixel 8a. It's always been set up to save my history, but for the last several days, it's not showing history (which makes navigating a huge PIA). I did not change any settings, and I've checked every possible setting to ensure they are set properly, but it's still not saving. Can't uninstall & reinstall the app because it's a Google phone.
Any ideas how to fix this? I've looked in the Maps help forum and it's useless...

Help/Support Google Earth being temperamental
For some reason, when I go to my Google Earth projects, it just says "no projects yet". When I have a lot of projects, I can access them by searching my browser history. Any way to fix it, or is it just a Google Earth thing and I have to wait?
For Reference, My logged in and every seems as normal.
