Megathread Air Quality is bad megathread

The smoke from Canadian wildfires are hitting the area hard. The air quality is really bad.

All discussions of this topic will be redirected to this thread. (The subreddit doesn't need multiple posts with the changing AQI.) Especially interesting pics of the smoky air will be allowed, but most will be redirected to this thread (you can post the pic to imgur, then add that link to this thread).

Confetti From ACDC Madison Show

Post image
Upvotes

Hey - Just wondering if anyone has some of the confetti that was shot near the end of Sunday's ACDC Madison show that they could spare? Our seating (and event security) prevented us from being able to get any after the show. If we could get a couple pieces to throw in the old scrapbook, we sure would appreciate it. Rock on!

Restaurants for a first date

I'm not from the area but will be meeting a woman for a first date this weekend. Any suggestions for a dinner that's not too casual but not overwhelmigly fancy where we'll have space to chat? Trying to avoid super busy restaurants with super cramped seating. Thanks so much in advance

I haven't been down the hill in a year or more. What food truck options are on Library Mall these days for lunch on a weekday? What's your favorite one and/or your favorite thing to order? Thanks y'all.

Calling all sewing gals!

Hi!

I am looking to get an Etsy pattern printed on one sheet of paper rather than spending 2 hours taping together 30 pages and then cutting it out.

Does anyone know where I can go for that here in Madison or the surrounding areas?

TIA 🩷

Crema Cafe Breakfast Sandwich recipe? 🙏🏼

I moved away from Madison five years ago to go to school in Oregon (the state). I miss Crema Cafe's Breakfast Sandwich every single day of my life hahaha. Hands down best breakfast sandwich in Madison, and I lived there for nearly 20 years. Does anyone know how they make it taste so good? I think it's the cream cheese. But also, I think it's the dressing they put on the salad. I miss Madison. If anyone who used to work there knows the recipe and would be willing to share it, I promise I'll only use it for personal purposes 🙏🏼

Fun dessert for a casual dinner party tonight

I would usually go to Bloom but they close at 3:00 pm and I'm not in town until 4:00 pm. What are your go-to dessert options for a small gathering?

Any climbers willing to run a day trip to devil’s lake with me?

Upvotes

I’ve been climbing for a few months. My friends took me out to a few spots outside of Denver and I got really hooked. I have mtn project, but I’m pretty intimidated to go looking for spots by myself (none of my Madison friends climb). Would anyone be willing to take a day trip up and show me some spots? Willing to buy lunch and drive.

Climbing gym recommendations for absolute beginners

Upvotes

Hello strangers! I’m a mid-20s tech worker looking to become even more of a walking stereotype; to that end, I’d like to join a climbing gym.

I’ve climbed my fair share of trees and hopped a few fences before, but I have no experience capital-c Climbing. I know there are plenty of options out there, but I’m looking for recommendations for a place that’s good for absolute beginners, ideally that offers intro classes and rental equipment. I’m going into this with no prior knowledge. Which places have you all had good experiences with?

Proselytizing old man w/ two children on my porch

I was on my east side porch Saturday afternoon when a man in his 60s/70s showed up with who he called his children (boy and girl, 12 -14). He walked up uninvited and asked if I was open to having a conversation about injustice. I should have said no. I didn't.

He asked a few questions and did not engage with my answers (ex: Are humans' natural tendency toward selfishness responsible for all the injustice in the world? I told him I thought that was cynical and that humans also have a natural tendency for generosity. He scoffed at that.), and of course moved to Jesus. I pushed back on his reference to Jesus as figure from history and he got angry and walked away, yelling back at me. He proceeded to ring doorbells up and down my block and accosting people on the sidewalk.

Anybody know his story? I felt quite back for the kids, for many reasons. I don't care about the Jesus stuff, but he seems angry and off-balance.

We're doing a thing!

We've got it all- local and area artists and makers, food trucks, live music, and hard cider! We'll even have a tarot reader working indoors giving readings!

The festivities start at 11am, with vending continuing until 4pm. The Food truck will stick around until later, as the music starts at 6 and the Cidery is open until 8pm.

The weather is looking decent and we're excited to see folks out there!

Abandoned Property Issues and Drama

EDIT, because the plot thickens and I'll keep you posted: I emailed a copy of my City complaint and very quickly heard back from the County Executive’s Office and they say, You are correct that ownership of parcels did transfer to Dane County last summer due to unpaid taxes, and the county is working to comply with federal, state, and local laws to get taxes paid and parcels returned to beneficial use.

I, too, am confused from this information since the Dane County Treasurer’s Office has not yet received a successful bid or offer to purchase. Also, the county has not authorized placement of realtor signage on these parcels since they need to be sold via public auction. Please feel free to forward to this email any photos of the realtor sign on the referenced county land along XXX street as well as any contact information you have directly from the realtor or designee.

In regard to zoning concerns, please know that I have been in contact with the City of Madison Zoning Department. We discussed the city taking any necessary corrective actions to comply with local zoning ordinances and place any city-accrued charges on the tax bill as a special following completion of work. Also, if you hear anything further from City Zoning or the state DNR, please feel free to forward them to the County Treasurer’s Office so that the state, city, and county can discuss the technicalities of issues.

My neighbors and I are at a loss here and wondering what our options are, regarding a nuisance/abandoned property on our street (it's directly across from my house). I appreciate any suggestions beyond what we've already tried!

The property and house have been abandoned for many years now and it's been slowly falling apart, with trees falling on it and also literally growing up from the inside and out the roof. Weeds have taken over and dangerous, diseased trees with many dead limbs are on the property, ready to fall over on to other homes. Mice and rats abound and have started venturing into other yards now. My neighbor just told me that she saw a rat in my driveway this past weekend - none of us have EVER seen rats here. No thank you. Worst of all, there is a rusting fuel oil tank, with oil in it, and two large not-empty gas tanks.

Background: The previous owners walked away and had many years of unpaid property taxes, so Dane County is now listed as the owner on the city tax assessor site. The county has included it in at least two property auctions, but they are asking almost $300,000 for a rat house with holes in the walls and roof. My neighbor reached out to the assessor about this and requested they inspect it and lower the price to a more reasonable fair market value - Dane Co can't lower their auction price below what the City thinks its worth and it certainly is not $300,000, once you factor in the cost of house demo and the removal of the three giant sick Siberian elms. FYI that this is an older neighborhood with small bungalow houses that sell lately for $350,000-$450,000 when in decent condition.

Oddly also, despite Dane Co being listed as the owner still, a couple weeks ago, some guy put up his real estate sign with a "Coming Soon!" on it. He initially told my neighbor in person that he was going to renovate the house (laughable, there's no way, it's a haz mat site at this point just from mold and structural issues). Then when she called him later to ask about the tanks and danger trees, he said he bought the lot and plans to re-sell it without addressing the issues and aggressively asked why she was asking so many questions. We have no idea who this guy is or if he's selling it for Dane Co or someone else. As of today, Dane Co is still listed as the owner.

We have all contacted the City of Madison property inspection office numerous times online and via formal letter, but nothing has been done, other than a few people coming out and looking at it and leaving. We just reported the gas and fuel oil tanks to the DNR last week, but haven't heard back. Finally, last night, we contacted our alder who at least said he'd look into it. Beyond all this, is there anything else that might be effective?

Sylvee - first timer

Heading to the Sylvee tonight for a show. I have general admission tickets. Doors open at 6:30 show starts at 8 PM. I think there’s an opener. What do I need to know as a first timer? Is the venue general admission friendly? Best places to stand? How early do I need to get there for okay-ish views? All information welcome! Thanks!
