I got a Reddit account just to submit my designs. I've lived here in Boulder County for nearly 30 years. I love this special place.

My family and I sat down and thought intently about what it means to live here: Longmont's inherent beauties, its rich history, many communities, and its promising future, and how to best capture that symbolically and literally.

The first design is more 'vibey' and speaks to the celestial landscape Longmont has, both day and night, over the mountains. There's beauty here every day, and when something brilliant happens, like a sunset or a planetary event, the whole town feels united. I think just because it's a flag it doesn't have to look like a typical/rigid flag, as Longmont is not a typical city.

The second flag design features one of the roses from the Roosevelt Park rose garden. The rose has a negative-space gear/bolt shape around it, representing the industrial community and history here, juxtaposed with the everlasting, perennial beauty of the rose, which is so prevalent and celebrated in Longmont.

The third flag takes a more direct approach: celebrating Longs Peak, Longmont's namesake and icon.

My design program skills are a bit novice, I had some help from some friends who have more design experience and familiarity with Adobe, so please look past my technical abilities :) But I hope the concepts come though.

The city is going to ask us to increase property tax and sales tax to fund new staffing for the police and fire departments.

The measure would fund the city’s 10-year public safety staffing plan, which calls for adding the additional public safety staff over 10 years to address growing service demands. The sales tax increase would be 0.24%, and the property tax increase would be 4.06 mills (a mill in property tax is a unit of taxation equal to $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value). In layman’s terms, this would make the taxpayer impact $2.40 on a $1,000 purchase, and $124 annually on a $500,000 home. In total, the city estimates this will raise $96.62 million in revenue over the course of 10 years, give or take slightly, depending on sales tax revenue and population growth.

During the ALPR discussions at council meetings earlier this year, it was brought up that if the city rejected ALPRs altogether, we would need to increase police staffing to make up for the hours lost. Does this mean if voter approve the public safety measure this fall, we can ditch the Axon contract/cameras? 👀

When it comes to Mexican food, I know Longmont is rich in taquerias and food trucks, but I want to take the fam to more of a sit down joint. Nothing fancy, just good food, good service, decent ambiance, etc.
