Yes, I am highly aware the Elizabeth Line, Overground and DLR are not London Underground lines.

Saw it fluttering about the carriage, and the train was just entering the tunnel section - it probably would have been crushed if it’d stayed.

I rebuilt my London Underground tracker, RailTracker 1.6 is now live.

Hi everyone, I am the developer behind RailTracker, a London Underground app published under JGApps.

I shared an earlier version on Reddit about a year ago, and since then I’ve rebuilt and redesigned a large part of the app. Version 1.6.0 has just launched, and now I’m looking for honest feedback from people who regularly use or know the Underground.

RailTracker includes:

• Live trains displayed across line maps
• Live station departures
• Line statuses and detailed disruption information
• Shows last-known departure times
• Notifications for selected lines
• Station information and connections
• A redesigned Notification Centre
• A cleaner and more consistent interface throughout

The app is completely free, with no adverts, subscriptions, accounts or user tracking.

Version 1.6 focused heavily on improving the live maps, simplifying station pages, making disruption information clearer and bringing the whole app under a more consistent JGApps design system.

I’d particularly like to know:

• Is the live train map useful during an actual journey?
• Is anything confusing or difficult to find?
• Are there any features you feel are missing?
• What would make you keep RailTracker installed alongside, or instead of, TfL Go or Citymapper?
• Does the interface feel clear and easy to use?

Positive or negative feedback is welcome. I’d much rather know what needs improving than only hear that it looks good.

These three Yellow Pages adverts appeared on different variants of the July 1998 pocket Tube map: “Ear piercing”, “Sightseeing” and “Antique dealers”.

Each advert was printed twice—once on the cover side and again alongside the map. Apart from the adverts, the cover, date and map were identical.

A nice example of 1990s advertising humour, and an easily missed detail that created three distinct versions of the same Tube map.

Image 1: North - Southeast Line

A major benefit of this line would be relieving pressure on the Northern line, currently one of the busiest Underground lines. By creating an alternative route through central London and into Southeast London, some journeys currently relying on the Northern line could be redistributed. The route connects important locations including Euston, Tottenham Court Road, Charing Cross, Waterloo and London Bridge before continuing towards areas such as Brockley, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Norwood Junction and West Croydon. The potential Thamesmead branch is inspired by previous TfL proposals to improve transport links to Thamesmead, an area with significant housing growth but historically limited rapid transit connections.

This proposal focuses on connecting the southwest and southeast of London without requiring passengers to travel through Central London. A key feature is giving Clapham Junction a direct Underground connection, something the current network lacks despite it being one of London’s busiest railway stations. The line would connect areas such as Richmond, Putney, Wandsworth, Clapham, Brixton, Peckham, Lewisham, Woolwich and potentially Orpington.

The southwest section focuses on improving connections to the Borough of Kingston upon Thames, a densely populated area with significant demand but limited Underground access. The Chessington branch would also provide better public transport access to Chessington World of Adventures, one of London’s major visitor attractions. The goal is to make journeys between northeast and southwest London significantly faster and more convenient.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the current network is the difficulty of travelling between different parts of outer London. Journeys from Northeast London to Southeast London can sometimes take a surprisingly long time because passengers often have to travel into central areas and change multiple times. u/madiconvey also said “Why does it take so long to get from Walthamstow to Greenwich?” This route would create a direct connection between areas such as Cheshunt, Stratford, Canary Wharf, Greenwich, Lewisham and Thamesmead. The Thamesmead branch would address one of London’s largest areas currently lacking a rapid transit connection.

Image 5: Orbital Line

Unlike the other proposals, this line would not have a traditional terminus. It would operate as a continuous orbital route around outer London. The purpose is to allow easier suburb-to-suburb journeys without travelling into Central London. The line would connect major outer London centres including Walthamstow, Barking, Thamesmead, Lewisham, Croydon, Sutton, Wimbledon, Richmond, Wembley and back to Walthamstow. u/Questjon and u/harshil9 also suggested in my most recent post!

Which one would you choose?

So I was on my way to work. Got on the Northern line at charing x. It was very busy so I was right by the doors. The next station I get off otherwise it would have been very painful for people to get off with me in the way. Im standing on the side of the doors waiting for people to alight. A woman and her son are standing on the other side. She decides to push in front of me with her son. She gets on with her son trailing behind. There's enough space for me and her son to get on so I step on. Then bam, the doors shut and her son and my rucksack are both trapped in the doors.

Obviously quite a traumatic incident for her son. Not great for me either. I'm not really mad at the woman but im bewildered at the platform tfl guy and the train driver. What are these two clowns doing? The platform tfl guy with the signal device was standing right next to us so he can clearly see we are waiting to get onto the train and ive given up my spot to allow people off. Why does the train driver close the doors so quickly and is it because of the signal guy? Just ended up delaying us further as we unstuck ourselves from the door. Literally no time given to get on the train.

I’m curious to see what people think.

Imagine TfL announced funding for one brand-new London Underground line. It can be any route you like, provided it’s a completely new line rather than just an extension of an existing one.

Where would you have it start and finish? Which stations or areas would it serve? What transport or connectivity problems would it solve?

Whether your idea is based on realism or just what you’d personally find most useful, I’d love to hear it.

I did make this post earlier but was unable to upload the image properly. This project took me 10 months to complete and I am very keen to share it here, where I hope it will be appreciated.

The aim is to create a map showing London‘s transport services that is understandable, but precise about service information and more geographically accurate than the official one. It’s also just a fun project, because I have always loved the tube map and was keen to have a try at designing my own version.

I’ve been working on a small side project called Mind the Map:

It lets you build your own fantasy London Tube line using real stations, choose the line colour/name, and export the result as a Tube-style map.

I made it because I’m a bit obsessed with Tube maps and wanted something more creative than a journey planner. It’s not trying to compete with TfL Go, Citymapper, etc. It’s more of a toy for “what if this line existed?” ideas.

For fun, I made a couple of demo lines:

• The Tourist Line: connecting places like King’s Cross, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Westminster, Waterloo, London Bridge, and Tower Hill.
• The Monopoly Line: a silly attempt to map the London Monopoly board onto nearby real Tube stations.

It’s still an MVP, so I’d love feedback from people who actually care about the Underground:

• Is the station selection usable?
• Does the exported map look good enough?
• What feels confusing?
• What feature would make this more fun?

A few things I already know are rough: mobile UX may still need polish, and the schematic export is intentionally simplified rather than geographically perfect.

Would love to see any ridiculous or oddly plausible lines you make.
