I rebuilt my London Underground app โ€” RailTracker 1.6 is now live

Hi everyone, Iโ€™m the developer behind RailTracker, a London Underground app published under JGApps.

Version 1.6.0 has just launched after a major redesign, and Iโ€™m looking for honest feedback from people who regularly use TfL services or know the Underground well.

RailTracker includes live train maps, station departures, disruption information, line notifications, tunnel-friendly last-known data and a redesigned Journey Planner.

The app is completely free, with no adverts, subscriptions, accounts or user tracking.

Iโ€™d particularly like feedback on the live maps, journey planning, readability and anything that feels missing or confusing.

RailTracker is available on the App Store and Google Play Store by searching RailTracker:

New bus proposal ideas for Northwest and East London

Please take these Northwest proposals with a grain of salt!

These will also be actively updated!

Northwest:

260: scrapped both sides (White City and Golders Green)

The new route will be Brent Park, Tesco - Finchley Road o2 Centre via Wilesden Green and Kensal Rise. The route will provide easier access for Brent residents to places like Queens Park, Brent Park, Cricklewood, Kensal Rise, Willesden,Maida Vale, Swiss Cottage, and Finchley Road

226: withdrawn from Golders Green ( Ealing Broadway and Golders Green)

The new route will be Ealing Broadway- Kilburn Park via Cricklewood. This will provide smoother connections to Kilburn for Brent residents from Sheldon Road

East:

New bus routes:

373 (Clapton Pond - Dagenham Green or New Road)

via Barking, East Ham, Upton Park, Plaistow, Stratford, Bow, Homerton, and Clapton Pond. This route will create broader connections from 4 different boroughs alongside my proposal idea for Greenhurst Bus Station in Kent Avenue in Dagenham

334 (Dagenham East - Loughton)

via Heathway, Martin's Corner, Goodmayes, Ilford, Gants Hill, Barkingside, Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill, and Loughton

This route will provide brand new connections to Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill, Loughton in Epping Forest to Barking and Dagenham whilst ensuring reduced peak times on routes 167. The route will also acts a feeder route for the 364

Bus proposal ideas for Greenhurst Bus Station

Greenhurst Bus Station is my proposal idea for a high-frequency bus station in Kent Avenue, Dagenham, where they are working on the 45-acre Dagenham Green project

348: Greenhurst- North Greenwich (via Beckton, London City Airport)

This route will provide easy access for new Dagenham Green residents to London City Airport if travelling abroad and access to North Greenwich, the Millenium dome and shopping centre, bus station, Jubilee line, and Cable car

369: Barking, London Road - Greenhurst (via Heathway, Becontree Heath, Martin's Corner)

This route will provide easy access for commuters at Dagenham Heathway to Barking Station and Town directly

374: Romford, Queens Hospital- Greenhurst (via Heathway, Becontree Heath)

This route will ensure easy hospital access whilst acting as a feeder for the 175 route and reducing peak times. This route would most likely be a single decker

387: Chingford Station - Greenhurst (via Becontree, Ilford, South Woodford)

This workhorse route will provide great access for new Dagenham Green residents to the District line via Becontree, the cCentral line via South Woodford and Gants Hill, the Overground via Chingford, and the Elizabeth line via Ilford whilst ensuring reduced peak times on route 145

392 (24 hours): Lakeside, Shopping Centre- Greenhurst (via Rainham, Wennington)

This route will play a role as a feeder route for the 287 towards Rainham to then make its way to Lakeside whilst reducing peak times on routes 287 and 372 and ensuring late night access to the Beam Park and Dagenham Green ares. This route would most likely be a single decker

676: Jo Richardson Community School- Greenhurst (via Heathway, Sydney Russell School, Martin's Corner, Becontree Station)

This school Express route will ensure easy access to hotspots such as Heathway, Martin's Corner, and Becontree whilst providing a major link to 2 different schools and providing Express service to get school go-ers to school faster and effectively. This route will also reduce peak times on route 364

N66: Walthamstow Central- Greenhurst (via Heathway, Romford, Newbury Park, Gants Hill, Leytonstone)

This route will ensure late night access for late night commuters travelling to the Heathway, Romford, Newbury Park, Gants Hill, Leytonstone, Walthamstow areas whilst connecting 4 different boroughs

78 (express): Greenhurst- Grays (via Rainham on the A13)

This will be a non-TfL Express route for commuters travelling to Essex and ensuring a fast and reliable service

I keep getting blocked for unpaid fares even though I've paid

In the last two months I've been blocked by TFL four times, even though I always tap in and out and have more than enough in my account. I use Apple Pay on my phone if this makes a difference.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? It becomes more frustrating each time it happens and I have to cab anywhere. I don't know what could be causing it, I make sure that the gate lights go green before I go through them.

Tube ๐Ÿš‡ Apple Pay declining?

Hi guys, recently started an apprenticeship in London and once a week normally on a Thursday my AP declines the transport fee, I have the funds but it still declines.

This makes my AP blocked from any public transport and also means I need to pay again with a separate card?

Is there any way to stop my AP being blocked.

Should I be using my physical card instead or would that not help the problem?

I travel from zone 6 and then get the tube.

Any help is much appreciated :)

Bus ๐ŸšŒ Thank you to #13 bus driver.

Today was possibly one of the lowest days in my life unfortunately. Without going into too much detail some pretty awful un-aliving thoughts have been very constant, but I MUST point out I am safe and I have an excellent therapist Iโ€™m currently seeing and working with actively.

But I was cycling down Finchley Road past the Addison Way bus stop and this number 13 bus (towards Victoria) noticed we were both sort of racing each other downhill just prior, so he of course overtook me further up the hill.

I want to mention that his little beep, wave and smile to me just then lifted my mood so much more than he would have imagined. He legitimately helped me laugh the first time wholesomely, in at least a few weeks.

To you Mr Bus driver, I thank you so much. That meant so much to me.

Crossrail 2 Future London rail and tube map

UPDATES

More maps ยท Instagram

I generally kept expansions to those already proposed in some official form by councils or advocacy groups, in order to keep the map more realistic and less of a wishlist.

I also simplified National Rail service patterns in some areas, but this doesn't include peak-only services or similar. A few stations are renamed to better fit their area. Made in Illustrator

New lines:

  • Attenborough line - Crossrail 2, including WAML quad tracking allowing it to take over slows up to Stansted
  • West London Orbital
  • Sutton tram, including taking over the Epsom Downs branch
  • Hertforshire tram-train - high-floor tram. Takes over the Met curve from Rickmansworth to Croxley, then uses the Croxley Rail Link alignment to Watford High Street, sharing with the Lioness to a flyover and elevated station at Watford Junction. It then takes over the Abbey line to St Albans where a it runs on a new street-running alignment to St Albans City

Extensions:

  • Bakerloo line extension - Elephant and Castle to Hayes and Beckenham Junction
  • DLR to Thamesmead - existing extension plan but continues to Abbey Wood including another station at Thamesmead (South Mere)
  • Northern line to Clapham Junction
  • Elizabeth line to Gravesend, with the Elizabeth and Thameslink using the existing slow line and South Eastern/Chatham services likely using a new pair of fast tracks
  • Chingford line to Stratford - reopens the Hall Farm Curve
  • Chiltern to Old Oak Common

Infill stations:

  • Castle Green (Suffragette)
  • Beam Park (Tilbury & Southend)
  • Shoreditch (Central)
  • Tower Hill (DLR), replacing Tower Gateway
  • Brockley (Chatham)
  • Streatham Common (Brighton/Skylark)
  • East Brixton (Windrush)
  • Camberwell (Thameslink/Skylark)
  • Thames Wharf (DLR Woolwich)
  • Old Oak Common (Elizabeth/Mildmay/Great Western)
  • Hythe Road (Mildmay)
  • Surrey Canal (Windrush)
  • Tottenham Hale (Suffragette)

(did I miss any?)

New Overground lines and names:

* - shortlisted or longlisted by TfL

  • Beacon\* - Northern City line, referring to the location of the "people's palace" Alexandra Palace on a hill, and physically and metaphorically acting as a "beacon" for the people of the area, as well as its role in broadcasting technology
  • Cimaron - West London Orbital, commemorating the first reggae band in the UK and the key role of Harlesden in the development of reggae
  • Cother\* - Watford-East Croydon, referring to Jack Cother, the first Asian professional football player who played for Watford and representing the Asian communities along the route
  • Fields - Greenford shuttle, commemorating Gracie Fields' role at the nearby Ealing Studios
  • Lovers\* - Victoria-London Bridge/West Croydon, celebrating the role of British Carribeans in the creation of Lovers Rock at locations such as the Eve Studios in Brockley
  • Skylark\* - Sutton loop, referring to the bird found in places like Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park, whose habitats encircle London and whose flight paths crisscross London just as TfL and the Overground do
  • Spitfire - London Bridge-Beckenham Junction/Tattenham Corner/Caterham, commemorating the role of pioneering female pilots like Amy Johnson and the planes that used Croydon Aerodrome during WWII
  • Moonshot\* - North Kent/Bexleyheath loop, honouring the first purpose-built community centre for Black people and its founder Sybil Phoenix, the first Black woman awarded an MBE
  • Turing - Hounslow loop and Waterloo-Chertsey-Weybridge, recognising Alan Turing and his work at the National Physics Lab in Teddington
  • Willow\* - Chingford line, referring to the willows along the banks of the Lea and their role in conservation and the local furniture industry

Question โ“ Which Oyster card do I get? Student living in London

Hello! Iโ€™m starting uni this September in London. My campus and accommodation are both in Zone 1. (My accom is on campus). I am thinking of opening a Santander student account to access a free 4 year railcard to save money on travel. But Iโ€™m stuck at Oyster cards, Iโ€™ve never used one before but I have already made an account.

My main questions are:
- how do they work?
- which type do I get (top up etc)?
- if I get an account online will my card be virtual or in person?

I feel like Iโ€™m over complicating it but as I have my own car at home I never really use public transport, so itโ€™s a switch up for me.

Stationly: London Tfl Live Departure Boards

If youโ€™ve ever had to sprint across a chaotic tube station with bags in both hands, desperately squinting at a departure board to figure out your platform, you know exactly why I built Stationly. I wanted to create something that takes the frantic guesswork out of our daily commutes.

I'm so excited to share that the app is officially available on Android now! It would mean the world to me if you could download it, take it for a spin, and let me know your honest feedback. You can grab it and see more details here:ย https://stationly.co.uk/#home

Please spread the word if you canโ€”it would be a massive help! ๐Ÿ™

P.S. iOS app to follow soon

TFL Autopay Tunnel charge

Iโ€™ve received a letter saying I must pay ยฃ90 as I havenโ€™t paid my way through the tunnel. However, I had money in the account at the time and the charge wasnโ€™t taken. This is the second time this has happened to me.

The first time I appealed, showed evidence of the money in my account at the time of attempt and I didnโ€™t receive any correspondence regarding the charge before receiving the letter. They accepted this appeal.

This time round I appealed again saying the same and theyโ€™ve said no, theyโ€™ve sent correspondence and it was sent to my email. Iโ€™m an avid email watcher and I have not received a single email from TFL or tunnel charge or auto pay or anything relating to this charge ever. However, I did log into my online portal and find the correspondence they claimed to have sent to my email. That was my first time seeing it.

My question is, do I have a case here? These emails never reached me but were sent? Iโ€™ve got 4 days left to pay until itโ€™s the full amount and I honestly am out of answers. PLEASE HELP!!
