TLDR I am a park ranger. I am a park ranger for a park that contains a large cave system and I work primarily inside the caves with guests and maintaining the cave. The library has been doing a summer event and myself and my coworkers have been invited to do a "reading with ranger" series. I am the last one, I think 3 of my coworkers already went. Since we work in a cave that is what we thought we should talk about.

I had some broken stalagmites and a bat skeleton I was going to bring and a fun book about kids going into a cave, but the library apparently emailed my boss and told them that they are a little tired of bats and caves all summer LOL and want us to talk about something else about being a ranger (i guess like deer or mountains or trees which is fine). And also be more interactive with the kids with an activity which I didnt know about until this morning.

I am really confused now and dont know what to do. Can anyone give me some quick advice??? I am ok just asking the librarian if they have a book they would like me to read instead, but I need some sort of activity that I have to plan for 9:30am very shortly.... I dont have a lot of time so I am here in desperation and to get some ideas on what they expect me to do. I have not been in direct contact with the librarian and my boss confidently told me "I trust you to figure it out".

Is there some kind of resource or basic info about expectations of someone who comes to read at a library that I can look at? I dont want to disappoint them.

Edit: I ended up bringing my stalagmites and bat stuff anyway, and also grabbed a bunch of our forest animal stuffed animals and a snake skin and then asked the librarian for some books related to those other topics and it went fine. It was mostly toddlers which i am comfortable with since they just want to move and be engaged. I sang a song about bunnies with my bunny stuffed animals. I talked about snakes and the forest, and also most of those kids loved touching the stalagmites anyway. We hissed and wiggled like a snake. Winged it.

AC, really clean, the noises are usually pretty low and bearable (I usually have to wear my loop ear plugs in public places), it is super accessible and the librarians are so nice.. I overheard them like doing emotional labor during convos with multiple visitors ❤️ 📖 🐛
plus they had a community puzzle table and a “free little art gallery” :} when I was overwhelmed with my online coursework, I colored in a bookmark they had printed/free for visitors!

Ive heard of places where you can borrow digital movies like from a library, but its on something like libby, where theres a line, but you can rent a movie for a few days using a library card.

My local library system doesnt have anything like that, but i was wondering if anyone knew of ones that take people from different places, and what their names/apps were?

I'm about to release a large print edition of my cozy mystery (indie author), but I want to do it right, and I'm finding contradictory information both online, and in the large print books I browsed through at my local library.

Are your patrons ever complaining about large print books, for example italics being hard to read, or the line spacing not being wide enough, margin sizes, font used, anything really?

hi, so i am 13, but in 4ish months with turn 14 and will be able to work, i want a quiet not-too-stressful job and working at a library seems perfect (and i love libraries.) I wanted to ask a couple questions:

1. Will i be able to get hired at a library with no prior work experience?

2. What kind of jobs can a 14 year old get in a library?

3. How does the dewey decimal system/organizing books really work because i have a hard time understanding it (and websites/apps to practice maybe)

4. What would be expected on my resume?

I’m honestly kind of introverted/asocial, and working at library seems to lesser social than working somewhere like walmart.

Hello! I recently moved to a new area for work. It has a library that could use some love. I took my son for the first time today and he had a blast. The toys in the children's center were extremely loved and a little outdated. They had a box for people to donate glasses, and a calendar full of activities for adults and children. You can tell people really love going. I guess I have a few questions here. Do Library's have certain things they usually need in terms of donations? Does anyone know the best place to buy glasses in bulk at a great price? Is there anything adults could use that I could purchase? I haven't been to a public library in a long time. They are something I hold very close to my heart because I spent a lot of time at mine, reading books and utilizing their resources. Now that I am in a position to help, I want to make sure I am doing so in the best way possible. The librarians didn't tell me to donate anything specific, they gave me a number to call and thanked me for thinking of them. I called and haven't gotten a response. I am guessing I should wait and maybe just give them a check?

I recently read a paper (link above) that offers a compelling perspective on the role of rare books in modern research. Its central argument is that rare books do not simply preserve knowledge. They continue to produce new knowledge.

This idea stood out to me because discussions about digitization often imply that high quality digital copies can eventually replace access to the original. The paper argues the opposite. Researchers increasingly work in hybrid environments where digital collections help them discover and compare sources, but the physical book remains essential when the research depends on material evidence.

Features such as annotations, provenance, paper, bindings, printing techniques, and subtle differences between editions can all influence interpretation. These are aspects that digital reproductions often cannot capture completely.

The authors describe rare books as part of a "socio-technical research infrastructure." In other words, they are not simply historical objects to preserve. They are active participants in the research process, working alongside digital collections, catalogs, librarians, and scholars to generate new knowledge.

I found this shift in perspective particularly interesting because it moves the conversation beyond preservation and access. It suggests that the real value of special collections lies not only in safeguarding the past but also in enabling future discoveries.

I did a google maps search to try and find a library (just looking for a quiet place to get work done as Im having some work done at home atm). It seems all the librarires in my area have the word university attached to them? Just wanted to know if the regular TRNC citizens can go in there and borrow books etc or do you have to be a university student to be allowed in? Dont want to waste my petrol if they wont let me in tomorrow.

How are you? I've been searching for a recording of The Great Comet of 1812, an aclaimed musical based on War and Peace. I believe that the only professional copy is on the Theatre on Film and Tape (TOFT) on New York.

Since I am colombian I have almost no way of watching it, but I wanted to know if the NYC library would allow to share it with the public library sistem of my country.

Do you have any idea if it's possible?
