PSA World Cup Related Posts

Just wanted to let everyone know that posts regarding the World Cup will be allowed on here, even if not directly related to Lawrence. We're kinda bending the rules here but it's such a big and exciting event that we don't wanna hinder any chat about it or relevant info.

Normal subreddit rules will still apply to the posts (with exception of being directly Lawrence related, of course) so this doesn't mean you can just post whatever as long as it mentions the World Cup.

Obligatory no ticket-sales posts/comments.

Official Monthly Housing Thread

This is the official thread for networking and discussion about Lawrence housing.

r/Lawrence is a low post volume subreddit, and there have been problems in the past with it being overrun by ads and personal listings, so for the sake of the community please keep housing discussion here and don't create any additional posts on this topic.

A new thread will be created each month.

Curious about Stone Hawk Square

it’s been over a year now since construction was completed and I’m surprised it’s still empty given the mixture of college students and families in the area. I wonder why no business is renting out space here.

Lawrence Adopts Two-Year Data Center Moratorium

Activists have succeeded in getting the Lawrence City Commission to adopt a two-year moratorium on data centers while regulations are adopted. A 200 MW hyperscale data center could consume 200 MW of power or about 40% of the power produced by Evergy's coal-fired Lawrence Energy Center. That size of a hyperscale data center using evaporative cooling consumes roughly 2.5 to 5 million gallons of water daily (up to 50% of average daily water consumption in Lawrence). Data centers are used for cryptocurrency blockchains, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud storage which appear to be expanding with no end in sight.

School Supply Pre-package Boxes?

Hey, I'm a parent that has always wished there was a pack of school supplies put together and delivered to me. Laziness I guess, but I hate going into the crowded stores at this time of year. I haven't seen schools offering it, but maybe I'm missing it? If I put some together this year, would that be if interest to others?

Rant Halloween shit at Menards already

Surely this gives others the same feeling of existential spiritual numbness of not only the slow forward grind of capitalism but also the shameless hijacking of our sense of time.

What is Halloween if it last for FOUR months? I usually see the demoralizing end of summer “BACK TO SCHOOL SALES” the second Fourth of July is over and now we’re skipping that and going straight to Halloween? Why not go straight to advertising for Christmas 2027.

Your dopamine must be spiking at the recognition of the changing of the seasons and arrival of holidays AT ALL TIMES.

We know you like SPOOPY SEASON (yet bristle at any horror film that makes you slightly uncomfortable (see the recent backlash to Evil Dead Rise)) I’d pay money that people with yards full of SPOOOOOPPPYYY SEASON plastic wouldn’t last through all of “Red Rooms” or “Skinamarink” (or even give skinamarink a chance beyond some knee jerk reaction.)

SPOOOOOPY SEASON IM DAVID PUMPKINS ITS SO SPOOPY

“im not like the others im actually pretty messed up and Halloween is the only time people like me feel accepted” WE ALL FEEL THIS WAY WE ALL FEEL MESSED UP.

Menards WHY. Time just compresses in on itself like wet shards of wood in one of those presses that makes particle board just pressing and pressing and it will never explode! We’re going to end up moving Halloween to June 31st so we can spend half the year in Christmas mode and half the year in SPOOPY mode! Is this what you want!!!!

Birthday Cake is not special if you eat it EVERY DAY!

“Uhh I don’t think either of those movies you mentioned were scary at all” ok then tough guy tell me a movie you genuinely thought was scary and not just gory. (I’ll show you something scary… it’s called FOXNEWS.com (got em))

MAH 12 ft skeleton has a Santa hat on LOL GET IT!
“WE DO THINGS A LITTTTTTTLE DIFFERENTLY AROUND HERE” that family says.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

Question Where Are The Alt Hangouts?

I recently moved to Lawrence and I know there's a decent alternative scene here, emo, goth, punk, etc. I want to know what bars and locations people hangout, that play Punk, Rock, and metal music. Need to find a place I can feel in my element.

Looking for pickleball/fitness partner

I play pickleball at the sports pavilion in rock chalk park and would like someone to play with when my girlfriend doesn't want to play (so probably several times a week preferably in the evening). I'm also into backpacking/rucking, weightlifting, and cycling if anybody would be into any of those.

P.S. I know the rules say to go to the discord for looking for friends but I tried and there's barely anybody on there >.<

outdoor activities for summer?

hi! I’ve been wanting to get outside more to get some kind of a mental refresh. It’s so so so hot outside these days, and the only things I really do often are go to the pool, take walks, or drive around with the windows down.

Are there any outdoor activities in Lawrence you would recommend? I am just in need of a new hobby or even a new community or weekly event. Need a fresh start with something.

stay cool out there folks

Rant Some people can't park

Thumbnail gallery
62 Upvotes

I swear some people lack decency in this town, especially towards those who have issues with their bodies.... For reference...... I work at a local gas station (y'all can probably tell just from the photo which one) and last night I had a customer park in the handicap area and is a slightly larger man who needs room to enter their vehicle (black car).... Well, this individual in the White Dodge TRX decided that despite all the room they had available decided it'd be funny to park about 8-10in next to his car, knowing he is a larger gentleman... The gentleman in the black car was in the store when the incident occurred, I informed him about it and he confronted the individual who owned the truck, the owner then decided it was "funny" and showed lack of compassion... I had to defuse the potential fight that could've happened, which at times is not easy to say the least.... I know this is a long rant, but please.... All I ask is for some compassion towards others... and not be a Rude Dick...

Heads up: Disability Pride & ADA Celebration happening at the Dole Institute next Saturday!

Just wanted to share that there’s a big celebration for the 36th anniversary of the ADA next Saturday, July 25, from 1-5 PM. It’s the first time they’re doing it at the Dole Institute and it’s supposed to be a mix of education and just a fun social hangout for the community. As a learning disabled person myself, I’m really glad to see more of these events popping up. Is anyone else planning on going?
