Announcements Looking for new moderators and BananaHackers team members

Hi all,

In the past few years, the KaiOS ecosystem has changed drastically. Meta pulled WhatsApp and Facebook support from KaiOS 2.5, new devices are only limited to the US, yet KaiOS still survives (albeit very weakly). And BananaHackers team is seeing a leadership transition, with I and u/NoMoreUsernameLeak taking over the website, BananaHackers WebStore and the Wiki, and many experienced team members started to move on from the operating system.

Meanwhile r/KaiOS is still thriving as ever, as community members giving assistance to others regarding device problems, debugging and app development. However, as time goes on, I'm afraid that I cannot maintain the subreddit efficiently as a sole moderator.

As such, r/KaiOS is open for new moderators! Taking the role does come with a few responsibilities:

  • Most submissions on the subreddit are users seeking assistance with using their devices, so participating in the comments and giving help is a must. Researching and technical writing skills may be needed, as you may need to look up information on the official KaiOS website, the BananaHackers website, the applications on KaiStore and any third-party app stores.
  • A Discord account to join the subreddit's Discord server, communicate with the BananaHackers team and look up information not yet available on the website.
  • Having an actual KaiOS device for reference, a deep understanding of the operating system, knowledge of the app development process and submission process on the Developer Portal are all great assets. However, as long as you do well on your research, the BananaHackers team and community members are happy to assist you.
  • r/KaiOS receives relatively low traffic, so it's okay to just check it occasionally. Feel free to customise the subreddit and adjust the rules as you see fit (experience with customising AutoModerator is a plus!)

If you see yourself suitable for the role, send a moderator mail to the subreddit with a short introduction about yourself and why you might be able to take over the subreddit!

BananaHackers team is also looking for additional members. We're working on preserving information to prepare for the phase out of KaiOS, by transitioning to a new website based on Jekyll rather than Google Sites, adding new items to the BananaHackers WebStore, and rewriting guides to be suitable for beginners. If you have technical writing skills and want to help, please send me an email at duc (at) ducmbui.com.

You can also support the team financially by donating to team members at https://wiki.bananahackers.net/#_donate_to_the_bananahackers_team.

Thank you for helping and kudos if you made it through the post :)

Help — SOLVED! Howto: continue using GMail with the KaiOS E-Mail app if Google blocks it, without a smartphone or giving Google your phone number

Since about half a year ago, I can't add new GMail accounts to the KaiOS E-Mail app anymore the easy way, i.e. with OAuth authentication (web browser login): after logging in in the web browser, it says this app is blocked "for my security". Some others have encountered the same problem. And since about two months later, the app couldn't synchronize my already added account either anymore: it said the account needed to be reauthorized, but that fails with the same error. Some people have mentioned app-specific passwords as a workaround; this is a full guide how to do it.

The workaround involves having Google generate an "app-specific" password, which can be used to access GMail via IMAP and SMTP with traditional, password-based login. Unfortunately Google only allows generating app-specific passwords if you enable 2-factor authentication.

Curiously the Calendar app so far works for me with Google Calendar with the app's built-in Google Calendar support, which also uses OAuth authentication. If it stops working, it may be possible to get it to work via the generic CalDAV support.

If you have already enabled 2FA (2-factor authentication aka. 2-step verification) on your Google account:

  1. If you've previously added the GMail account in question, and it no longer works, first remove that account from the app: under Options/Settings, select the account, and then press the Delete acct soft key. — This shouldn't lead to data loss, except perhaps if you have unsent e-mails in the Outbox or Local Drafts folders. (The KaiOS E-Mail app doesn't synchronize drafts to the IMAP server; if the Outbox folder isn't shown in the folder list, there are no unsent e-mails in it.) — It may not be necessary to remove the account first, but if you don't, you'll have to give the new configuration a different name, which might cause problems (see below at Step 6).
  2. In a web browser (can be on a different device), go to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. This is supposed to be reachable via going to Manage my Google account / Security, then 2-Step Verification, then clicking the arrow next to App passwords, but that isn't always visible. It can also be reached by typing "app passwords" in the search box when you're on a top-level Google Account settings page (credit).
  3. Enter something like KaiOS as the app name (it only serves to identify the app to you), and click Create. Keep this open or note down the password.
  4. In the KaiOS E-Mail app, under Options/Settings, press the Add soft key.
  5. Press Advanced.
  6. Set your name and the first Email box. — The app will complain if e-mail address you enter here has already been added via the OAuth authentication method that is the default in the app for GMail accounts but may no longer work. The address you enter here is not the one that will be used to log into GMail's servers. It's used to identify the account to you in the app, and perhaps also as the sender of outgoing e-mails? So I'm not sure if it will cause problems if it's not the actual address.
  7. Leave Account type as IMAP+SMTP.
  8. Under IMAP settings, set Hostname to imap.gmail.com, Email to your full gmail address, Password to the app password created in Step 3. Leave Security as SSL and the Port as 993.
  9. Under SMTP settings, set the Hostname to smtp.gmail.com, Email to your full gmail address, Password to the same app password. Leave Security as SSL and Port as 465.
  10. Press Next, then complete the setup on the next screen.

How to enable 2FA the simple way:

In a web browser, under Manage my Google account / Security, select 2-Step Verification, click Turn on 2-Step Verification, and follow the instructions.

How to enable 2FA without giving Google your phone number, and without a smartphone:

For me the sticking point until now was that if you simply try to enable 2FA, Google starts with asking for your phone number. Realistically Google can know my phone number from my e-mails anyway, but I didn't want to concede to Google that they can force me to give them my number in exchange for being allowed to access my e-mails from the KaiOS app. And it doesn't give any indication that it's possible to enable 2FA with standard authenticator apps, without a phone number. But I recently found out that it is:

  1. In a web browser, under Manage my Google account / Security, select 2-Step Verification.
  2. Under "Second steps", click "Authenticator - Add authenticator app". (They don't tell you, but you can do this as the first and only step!)
  3. They tell you to install Google Authenticator for an Android or iOS device, but actually you can use any authenticator app! These authenticator apps are a standard system, and there are authenticator apps, including open source ones, not just for smartphones, but also for desktop computers, there are web-based ones, and there are also ones for KaiOS: KaiAuth is available in the Banana Hackers Store, and there also seems to be one in the Kai Store. Also, since it's a standard system and there are open source authenticator apps, at least some work on rooted Android devices, contrary to what I feared. Install one if you don't have one already.
  4. In the web browser where you did steps 1. and 2., click Set up authenticator.
  5. Scan the QR code with the authenticator app. — Alternatively, click "Can't scan it?" and in the authenticator app, and enter your e-mail address as the account name, "Google" as the issuer, and the code displayed as the secret key. Leave other settings as the typical defaults: time-based aka. TOTP, 30s timer, starting at 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z, token length 6, hash algorithm SHA-1.
  6. You can add the same account details to multiple authenticator apps on different devices to minimize the chance of getting locked out of your Google account. If all is set up correctly, you should see the same 6-digit number at the same time on all devices. The system time of the devices should be correct within a few seconds.
  7. In the web browser, click Next.
  8. Enter the code displayed in the authenticator app, and click Verify.
  9. If successful, click Turn on 2-Step Verification - Turn on. If needed, click Turn on 2-Step Verification again. If they say "To turn on 2-Step Verification you first need to add a second step to your Google Account, like a phone number", it's a lie.
  10. Under Add a phone number for 2-Step Verification, click Skip, then (if asked again) Continue anyway.
  11. Still under "Second steps" under 2-Step Verification, you can click the Backup codes option to download codes you can later use to log in in case your device(s) with the authenticator app(s) break, as another way to minimize the chances of getting locked out of your Google acocunt. You can save these to multiple devices and/or print them out.
  12. From now on, open (one of) your authenticator app(s) when logging into Google, as you'll need to enter/copy the code it displays. There is a leeway of a few seconds, so you can use a code about to expire even if it expires by the time you finish entering it.

News/Showcase Rooted TCL 4

Rooting the TCL Flip 4 was a fun project. I kinda want to try Android on it for more usability, but I dont know how functional it would be without a touchscreen. I might try adding a thinkpad style trackpoint or joystick mouse for it. I’ll definitely try Linux on it at some point. I can’t wait to see what the community does with it, and hopefully some new apps that work better with KaiOS 4.0 will appear. Fantastic value for price.

Help — SOLVED! No command screen - how do i fix this?

I have a Barbie Phone from Consumer Cellular, which operates on KaiOS. When I opened it this morning, it rebooted itself with the KaiOS reboot screen, and is now showing me a black screen that says "No command" and nothing else. I've tried charging it, holding the volume up+power keys, taking out the battery then putting it back in, et cetera. It refuses to do anything but sit on that screen, and will otherwise just occasionally turn off then turn back on, show the KaiOS screen, and then return to the no command screen.

I genuinely have zero idea how to fix this, and I don't even know what happened to cause it. It was acting perfectly normal last night, and now it's doing this. If this helps, my phone got extremely hot several times due to the heatwave in my area. Is it possible for the heat to have fried an internal component that helps the phone run properly? If so, is there anything I can do to fix it, or is it just permanently fried?

Recommendation Looking for a reliable 4G dumbphone with excellent hotspot/tethering (Europe/Italy)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a true feature phone/dumbphone that I'll mainly use for calls, SMS and, most importantly, as a hotspot for my laptop.

My requirements are:

  • reliable 4G and VoLTE support in Italy/Europe
  • stable Wi-Fi hotspot/tethering (this is my top priority)
  • good battery life
  • solid call quality
  • preferably not Android

I've already looked into models like the Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 8000 4G and Nokia 2720 Flip, but I'm open to other suggestions.

If you've used one daily, which model would you recommend and why? Are there any phones I should avoid because of poor hotspot performance or software issues?

Thanks!

Bugs/Unsolvable Add custom notice tunes

I want to add custom notice tunes to my Cricket Wireless Debut Flex (runs KaiOS 3.1) without rooting it so when someone messages me, I can hear my own tune instead of the pre installed ones. Is there any way I can do it without rooting?

DO NOT POST THESE COMMENTS: KaiOS 4 steps, stuff that needs rooting, setting custom ringers (ringtones)

Help e911 error message

I got an error message in my notifications (it had a gear as the icon, though I'm not sure it was the same gear as the settings app). It said something about 911 and WiFi calling, and when selected it opened a web browser to e911-reg.tracfone.com.

I'm using an unlocked Nokia 2780 on T-Mobile so I've no idea why I'm getting sent to tracfone URLs.

Unfortunately, the notification is gone so I can't grab the exact text. Has anyone else seen this before? I'm not sure what's going on here.

Help Nokia 8000

Hello everyone,

I recently performed a factory reset on my Nokia 8000. Since then, the pre-installed games (like Doodle Jump) are asking for payment again, even though they were already included/pre-loaded on the phone when I bought it.

Does anyone know how to restore access to the original game licenses after a reset, or is there a way to fix this licensing issue?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Help KaiOS and WiFi Calling?

I have a carrier with WiFi Calling enabled and I use it a lot. The SIM card can't register in a 5G network but it can register via WiFI.

And my Nokia doesn't seem to see the SIM card (it says No SIM detected) although SIM is there

Any idea how to make it work?

Help KaiOS and SIM card detection...

Hello there!

My last two mobile phones powered by KaiOS, a Cat B35 and a Hammer 5 Smart, both suffered from the same issue after two or three years, that is their SIM card suddenly disappearing or, after a simple manipulation (a change of SIM slots, APN, etc.), not being detected anymore... which of course basically made them useless. Standard advices, such as using the Clear Memory function, restarting the phones or even resetting them didn't seem to help...

In comparison, all other problems - double input at random or microphone mishaps (after suffering from a flooding...) - seem rather manageable!

So I was wondering whether this was a common issue related to KaiOS, other (possibly upgradable) software or an unsolvable problem related to cheap hardware. Should I considerer those phones lost?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

Recommendation {INDIA} Choosing a JioPhone for KaiOS Sideloading & Modding: Prima 2 vs JioPhone 2 (F300B vs F20A)?

Hey everyone, I'm looking to buy a KaiOS-based Jio phone in India primarily for the affordable network plans, but I'm really torn between the newer hardware and the older, more mod-friendly models. I am trying to decide between the Jio Prima 2, the JioPhone 2 F300B, and the JioPhone 2 F20A.

Here is where I'm stuck from a technical standpoint:

Jio Prima 2 (Newer Hardware): I tried this out for a couple of days and generally liked it. However, the T9 keypad typing felt a bit sluggish/off. More importantly, as far as I've researched, Jio has heavily locked this down (w2d debugging menu crashes, missing testbox menus, restricted hotspot configuration). Is there any known method to bypass the Jio restrictions on this device yet?

JioPhone 2 (F300B - QWERTY): I am highly motivated to get this model because I understand it's historically been jailbreakable via W2D or older OmniSD methods, allowing users to fully bypass the "Jio Lockdowns" to enable Wi-Fi hotspot and sideload custom third-party apps. However, this hardware is now 6–7 years old. Have recent OTA updates completely patched the exploits on these older models, or can they still be easily modified?

JioPhone 2 (F20A - QWERTY): I know this variant has the horizontal QWERTY form factor, but from what I’ve read, it seems inherently un-jailbreakable, cannot easily be sideloaded with OmniSD, and completely lacks UPI payment facilities.

My questions for the sub:

If I buy an older JioPhone 2 (F300B) today, is it still practical to root/jailbreak it, or will it likely arrive locked down via modern software updates?

If any of you have successfully bypassed the carrier restrictions or sideloaded apps on the newer Prima 2, what was your approach?

For daily use, does the older KaiOS 2.5 hardware hold up significantly worse than the newer Prima 2?

Would love to hear from anyone who has experience tweaking or custom-loading apps onto these Indian Jio variants! Thanks!
