I already ordered new tires, just wondering if you all would have replaced them earlier, rode a little longer, or made the same call

After 145.000 km the chain has stretched and the balancer sprockets have worn down so the only way to keep tension on the doohickey was a different spring position, I'll be buying 1.5 engines soon for €500 so until then it'll do to keep this 1988 klr600 on the road

More agressive tires or get a KLX ?

Went riding with the enduro friends and
I'm getting to the conclusion that the KLR is big and fat. Thank god for DirtRacks crash bars and metal skid plate, without that I would still be there.

Currently running aired down mission trail max because I planned on using this bike on daily but I got a cruiser instead.

Should I just swap to a KLX300 or get one as a friend for the KLR in the garage ?

I want to keep riding with the enduro friends but KLR is too slow.

I was asked to sum up my feelings on the KLR

To be fair, I am not any owner but frequent borrower of a KLR, but when another friend considering the purchase asked me about my experiences, this meme was all I could think of

For Sale Gen 3 Giant Loop panniers + 3D cycle quick detach plates

Hey all, former Gen 3 owner here. I got into an accident a while back which totalled the bike. Bonus info is it still drove just fine and was only totalled due to amount for repairs lol

I wanted to see if there'd be any interest here for a set of brand new Giant Loop MotoTrek panniers that are mounted to 3d cycle's quick detach panniers. I never had a chance to use them so they've just been sitting in a storage box in the garage ever since.

If anyone's interested I'd be happy to upload photos here or make a new post altogether, with verified photos/timestamp. I figured I'd ask here since these racks fit directly onto the gen3 ADV models racks.

Thanks for looking!

Class helped me out alot

I hadn't ridden in 15 years so decided to take a beginner class as I had never taken one before and was self taught previously. Talked to the instructor and he let me bring the klr out. I learned alot and it was fantastic and a good way to get use to the bike. Plus it lets me bypass the dmv test. Not that im ready to go out on the road yet.

Love the bike and feel of it though. The instructor kept commenting on the bike so after class I offered for him to ride it. He has a ninja 1000 and a Harley. After the ride he commented that is was a fun bike and he is tempted to get one now.

Got the springs ordered once they are swapped I'll start training the skills.

klr

I was riding around about 8 days ago when I noticed after i parked my 2007 KLR at home, it started (or already had been) smoking from the point where the muffler and exhaust pipe meet.. I look closer to find out it’s oil that’s dripping from my airbox onto my hot exhaust pipe which is causing the smoke. I notice there is a hole melted in the bottom of the airbox which is also not helping the dripping oil, so I take apart the bike to get to the airbox and see what’s up with the muffler and i see that the end of the muffler is pretty brittle and oil was leaking from it as well!!

I am pretty new to bike maintenance so I had a bunch of questions.. (i also have pictures for reference)

I have already bought a new airbox that will be here soon but should I JUST replace my muffler? or should i get a whole new exhaust AND muffler together?

What could have caused my oil to spit back up like that? I honestly feel like i might have over filled it but online was saying a lot of different things

Was it the busted muffler that caused the airbox to melt?

Sorry if there are super obvious answers i’m just super new to this and would love to be informed and learn how to fix up my own bike, go easy on me 🤣 thank you!

(the first picture is of the muffler and exhaust meeting point where the muffler looks pretty brittle, i can also provide a video!!)

I bought a used 650s with basically no more than a speedometer and fuel gauge. What else should I consider?

Mechanical Advice Having a super weird issue with my carb(?)

The previous owner described this issue to me. I drove it for about 2k miles with no issue, and then after doing a bunch of maintenance and repairs a few weeks back, I started having the same issue he had talked about.

After about 20 minutes riding on the highway at high RPM in 5th gear, the bike suddenly loses power, slows down, and won't rev over 2500 rpm. Continues riding just fine, and I can make it home at 35mph, but if I rev over 2500 rpm, it bogs down and starts lugging the same way as if you slip the clutch too quickly. Choking it gets a little more power out, but not much.

The previous owner said that he would dump a whole can of seafoam in there and it would stop for a while. For me, the times it has happened, I disassembled the carb, cleaned it, reassembled and everything runs fine for a while until it doesn't. I did notice a little bit of mechanical wear/shiny spot across one side of the needle and slide.

1999 KLR650 13k miles running 91 octane + 1/3 bottle of seafoam upper cylinder lubricant per tank

Previous owner said that his mechanic(?) buddy rebuilt the carb(?) and removed all (some) of the CA evaporative emissions system to try and solve the issue to no avail

Things I did before the issue appeared were

-valve shim adjustment

-10 cent carb mod

-new radiator and coolant flush

-fixed the idle mixture screw which was unscrewed so far that it was hanging out of the carb

-re-attached the slip on exhaust, which was not connected correctly and blowing 80% of the exhaust out the side

-oil change and new filter

-cleaned air filter

My only real guesses for what could be happening are

- the carb diaphragm isn't seating properly for some reason and that the vaccum from sustained high rpm is causing it to suddenly pop loose. I don't think seafoam would have fixed that though

-Rubber boot from the airbox or to the engine is vibrating loose and leaking

-No fuel filter causing clogging

-Some kind of fucked up vaccum leak from the chop job on the emissions

-Water seperating from gas and sitting on top of the tank with all the fuel addatives and years of built up tank gunk getting sucked into my carb

I know this is long, rambling, and all over the place, but if someone could point me in the right direction for diagnostics or most likely issues to check for, that would be amazing.

Mechanical Advice Gen 1 Turn signal replacement

Hey all

Do you guys keep the stock blinkers?

These things look huge and ridiculous, is there a regulation requiring them to be sticking out so far?

One of mine is busted up and the relay makes a winding sound when I switch to the right side, where the damaged one is. I'm guessing there's a shorted wire under the field repair.

Any recommendations for replacement blinkers that are more sleek looking?

Mechanical Advice Spark plug diagnosis?

Post image

Took out the Carb for a clean and rebuild. Also replaced the spark plug while in there (the one on the right).

No idea what this spark plugs appearance means, but I know it's not good lmao. Any ideas?

Going to do the Doohickey as well while the top of the bike is off. Chain looks over-slacked too... gonna try and clean it as well. So many stripped screws. Previous owner really did a number on this thing.
