My dealings with Riba

Salaam alaikum,

I wanted to share my story of how I got involved in Riba and how Allah helped me get out of this.

When I was 22, I had a large amount of savings which i used to put down for a deposit for a house. At the time, I was naive and didn't know better. In all honesty I was not as practicing as I would've liked to be.

Nonetheless, I took out a 25 year mortgage for a home in 2018 and put it on rent. A few years later I started practicing and researching more about Islam and i discovered the severity of dealing with Riba. When I read the verse about waging war with Allah and His prophet, i was shocked to my very core. I still remember that I cried alot that night and begged Allah to forgive me and find a way out for me. I couldn't believe what I had done.

I was quite hopeless at the time because I had a large amount of mortgage and 25year contract with the bank. I did as many overpayments as I could, but that hardly made a dent.

Fast forward 5 years from that night, my duas were answered!! My family members lent me the money to pay off my mortgage in full, and agreed that i would slowly pay them off in the future. The crazy part is that I never asked for that money, and they didn't even know my views on Islam and they really forced me to take the money and pay the debt off.

It has been 3 years since I paid off my mortgage and I am paying my family back. Till this day, it amazes me how Allah swt answered my duas, he helped me get out of such a deed.

I guess my message is for those who are in interest related debt, whether it be mortgage, loans or credit cards. Please do not ever give up hope in Allah, no matter deep you find yourself in debt or interest, there is always a way out, even if you cannot see it right now.

I would say the most important thing is to first acknowledge that it is a great sin and sincerely ask Allah for forgiveness and ask His help in getting you out of this. Some people who i know that are dealing with interest do not think that Riba is a sin. I wonder, how will you even ask for forgiveness if you do not think it is wrong?

I leave you with this quote from Imam Al-Ghazali:

He who seeks the world with his religion loses both. He who forsakes the world for his religion wins both

I ask Allah to save us from this sin and guide us all to the straight path. Ameen

Why is car insurance considered a necessity so permissible, yet getting a mortgage to buy a house to live in is not considered a necessity?

In Islam, conventional insurance is haram, but if local laws require it due to “necessity”, like car insurance, it is permissible.

Why is something like car insurance considered a necessity, but taking out a mortgage for the sole purpose of buying a house to live in with my family not a necessity?

Take London where I live. Plenty of people with families live perfectly fine using public transport and Ubers, yet many people still have cars despite the above options being available. My dad never had a car when I was growing up, yet my family got around perfectly fine.

People argue that renting is an option. Renting is fine when I’m young, healthy, and working, but what about when I’m old and I retire? How am I supposed to keep paying rent? If I own my home, my wife and I don’t need to worry about that, so why is home ownership not a necessity?

If anything, alongside food, a secure roof over your head is the biggest necessity no?

HALAL ETF with questionable campanies ?

Assalamu alaykoum my brothers and sisters of the ouma, I had this question for years now and it’s keeping me from placing my money on any Shariaa ETF. Knowing that most of the complaint shariaa ETF has some questionable companies on them, doesn’t make haram for us to place our money on? I’m specifically concerned about IT companies with software being user for war crimes or mass surveillance operations.

Please help me clear this and if you have any arguments don’t hesitate to express them.

This ulema demonstrates mortgages are not riba: Why do you think his logic is wrong?

Whenever I share this sheikh demonstration on conventional mortgages being halal - I get downvotes. Does anyone here have an actual point disproving his logic? Other than arguments of authority, just based on the merit of his reasoning: where do you disagree with his logic specifically?

Some framing:

  • Please, no argument of authority
  • He is not saying mortgages are a necessity (Qardawi view)- which in my view is a very weak argument
  • He is not saying riba is halal, he is saying mortgages are not riba

His TLDR is - mortgages are not a loan in the islamic sense because the recipient isn't free to dispose freely of the cash. Instead, the recipient acts as a buyer's agent for the bank. The bank owns the house upon inception and then sells it back to the recipient at a premium fee. This is a Tawwakil transaction followed with a installment transaction over time. But please watch the video as I am paraphrasing.

IQ Option is it legit for Arab / Muslim users? Islamic account, Arabic support and withdrawals

Salam. I'm looking at trading platforms that make sense for Arab/Muslim users, especially if you care about Islamic account terms. IQ Option keeps showing up because I see Arabic support, demo mode and swap-free account options mentioned, but I don't want a halal sticker only. I'm not looking for a generic IQ Option review. I want to understand whether IQ Option is legit for Arab users specifically: Islamic account terms, asset rules, deposits, withdrawals, verification, Arabic support and what happens if something is unclear. Anyone here tried it from Saudi, UAE or another MENA country?

Is it halal to make websites like these?

Assalamu alaikum

I am a programmer and I am really close to becoming a web developer and I was wondering if it is haram to accept clients that want their pics on their websites

Like for example a woman wants a portfolio with their picture on the main section of the website? Will I be sinful for making it?
