My dealings with Riba
Salaam alaikum,
I wanted to share my story of how I got involved in Riba and how Allah helped me get out of this.
When I was 22, I had a large amount of savings which i used to put down for a deposit for a house. At the time, I was naive and didn't know better. In all honesty I was not as practicing as I would've liked to be.
Nonetheless, I took out a 25 year mortgage for a home in 2018 and put it on rent. A few years later I started practicing and researching more about Islam and i discovered the severity of dealing with Riba. When I read the verse about waging war with Allah and His prophet, i was shocked to my very core. I still remember that I cried alot that night and begged Allah to forgive me and find a way out for me. I couldn't believe what I had done.
I was quite hopeless at the time because I had a large amount of mortgage and 25year contract with the bank. I did as many overpayments as I could, but that hardly made a dent.
Fast forward 5 years from that night, my duas were answered!! My family members lent me the money to pay off my mortgage in full, and agreed that i would slowly pay them off in the future. The crazy part is that I never asked for that money, and they didn't even know my views on Islam and they really forced me to take the money and pay the debt off.
It has been 3 years since I paid off my mortgage and I am paying my family back. Till this day, it amazes me how Allah swt answered my duas, he helped me get out of such a deed.
I guess my message is for those who are in interest related debt, whether it be mortgage, loans or credit cards. Please do not ever give up hope in Allah, no matter deep you find yourself in debt or interest, there is always a way out, even if you cannot see it right now.
I would say the most important thing is to first acknowledge that it is a great sin and sincerely ask Allah for forgiveness and ask His help in getting you out of this. Some people who i know that are dealing with interest do not think that Riba is a sin. I wonder, how will you even ask for forgiveness if you do not think it is wrong?
I leave you with this quote from Imam Al-Ghazali:
He who seeks the world with his religion loses both. He who forsakes the world for his religion wins both
I ask Allah to save us from this sin and guide us all to the straight path. Ameen
