My mother is Irish born citizen so there was no need for FBR. My mother mentioned about possibly buying property in ireland (she's in the US right now) so I figured it may be a good idea that I get my passport to potentially make things easier in the future.

I messed up pretty badly on the first application and didn't have everything prepared when I created the application for my passport. It timed out and they returned everything, I followed directions much more closely and resubmitted all original documents.

Still waiting on receiving my originals back but received my passport yesterday. Took less time than I thought it would to be honest.

Thanks for all the help from this community. It's really something to have support here. I'm going to try to help answer any questions for others.

Edit: I did have a question during the application process that I didn't see a definitive answer and hopefully it will help someone else in the future.

My mom's original marriage certificate was damaged and unusable from Ohio in the USA. I contacted the court in Ohio and sent them a money order and they sent back what looked like a photocopy of the original but it had the embossed stamp on the bottom of the page from ohio. This seems to have been sufficient for the Irish passport office and made it an "official" document. Glad I did that ahead of time. Like I said, I went through the requirements very closely and researched all of this ahead of time.

I received my golden email today! 🇮🇪

FBR approval email: 22/07/26

Total wait time: 359 days

A sigh of relief when I got this email (and the delivery confirmation email from An Post) this morning! 🙌🏻

I sent via USPS priority international. It took 11 days total to get there. Declared $1 on the customs form and wrote vital records for foreign birth registration on it. You can use your USPS tracking number to track through An Post as well, which is super nice.

Hoping I get a confirmation email from FBR folks, but realize that may not happen. Just felt like celebrating! lol

Question for anyone who has gotten their citizenship application approved in last 60 days or so...when did you apply? Im just trying to understand the approval timeline

After nearly 3 months my passport has finally gone to printing. The application was processing for about 7 weeks so they’re definitely facing a backlog

The big one however, I was asked to submit extra documents this week (on Monday). I reached out to them on chat and asked why I needed to send more, and they stated that the docs I sent had expired in 2024. This was impossible so I double and triple checked the ones I had sent. It then hit me that the documents were using the North American date format. It was human error, just misreading the dates. I asked them to review again and 2 days later (today) I saw it had gone to printing.

Take photos of all the documents before you send them and question things before submitting more stuff which will massively delay the process! Especially those applying from the US/Canada. I’m so glad I reached out and asked them in the first place.

Has anyone successfully applied with longer absences (>70 days) over multiple years and still received their citizenship?
Ofcourse with a valid reason: in my case, caring for my chronically sick mother

Confirmed my address: 14/07/26 (delay because their email went to my junk folder! Make sure to regularly search ‘dfa’ on your junk to not miss any- it was a different email to the previous one they used so it didn’t help that I had made the original a ‘safe’ email address)

Used web chat to as if they had received my address confirmation email as they hadn’t replied and they congratulated me then: 16/07/26

My husband and I moved to Ireland just this past February and he applied for his stamp 4 IRP based on his marriage to me (22 years of marriage). His application is still processing but we need to travel for my father’s 80th birthday - a big celebration that includes his parents as well. He is a US citizen, I have a dual citizenship.
If we travel before his application is approved, will it put his application at risk? Thanks in advance.

I (23F) and my bf (26M) have been dating for 10 months now. We don’t live together, but we see each other fairly often.

I am Indonesian, he is Welsh, but have been working here in Indonesia (has obtained an Indonesian Residence Permit) for the past year. I’ve been awarded a fully-funded scholarship to study in Ireland for my master’s, and I am currently in my visa application process.

As I was filling out my application, I was wondering whether I should declare him as my ‘unmarried partner’ or should I state myself as ‘single’? He won’t stay with me in Ireland, as he is still working in Indonesia. Since I’m applying for a Student Visa, all of the online resources about the partnership status seem to only talk about the marriage/partner visa.

Another thing to note is that before going to Ireland, I am planning to go to the UK first to visit some friends. I’ve obtained my British Visitor Visa, and in that one I did declare him as my ‘unmarried partner’.

My simplified "Reckonable Residence" below just for context,

2018 - First time in Ireland / Stamp 1 ( 1 Year )

2019 - Living in Ireland / Stamp 1 ( 1 Year )

2020 - Went back to home country / No permit / No IRP / No Stamp

2021 - Still in home country / No permit / No IRP / No Stamp

2022 - Still in home country / No permit / No IRP / No Stamp

2023 - Returned to Ireland / Stamp 1 ( 1 Year )

2024 - Living in Ireland / Stamp 1 ( 1 Year )

2025 - Living in Ireland / Stamp 1 ( 1 Year )

2026 - Living in Ireland / Stamp 1 - Continuous 12 months for final year before application.

So I put my dates on the Naturalization Calculator and I have sufficient days to meet the 5 of 9 year rule.

My only question, does my 2020-2022 going back to my home country (End of Work Permit / Contract) without holding any IRP/Stamp resets my 9 years? or the the 2018 - 2019 reckonable residence will still be considered?

I took over two years to gather all my records and mail the FBR packet to Dublin, mostly because I procrastinate. However, the national office for the Civil Registration Service could find no birth or death records for my grandfather (b. 1883). After several e-mail exchanges and phone calls, I learned that each county has a local office, and Galway staff were able to find the evidence. It's funny that the FBR process will not allow church records, yet the official certificates include photocopied excerpts of parish baptismal registers for my mother (b. 1925) and grandfather. My application arrived in Dublin this morning, so now the yearlong wait begins.

I applied for my first Irish passport about a month ago. I got my photo taken in a chemist in Ireland and they checked the photo online, it passed the checks.

I did my passport application online using the electronic photo sent to me by the chemist. No issues were raised when the application was made. I then send off the documents required.

Nearly four weeks later I get an email to say the photo is not acceptable (they said it was not in focus) and to resubmit. I then went back to the same chemist and got a new photo. They checked the photo online, it passed. I’ve now resubmitted it, and it was accepted.

Has anyone had this issue recently. Is it because they have changed the passport design?

Hi all - I submitted my application in Nov 2025, and haven't heard anything since (acknowledgement email aside). I logged into the portal just for the sake of it last week and noticed that my application is now marked as 'in progress' with 'garda vetting initiated'. The last timestamp is about 10 days ago. I haven't received an email with any updates or information, so just wondering if this is normal or whether I should have gotten some kind of update notification (even if I wasn't being sent paperwork just yet). Thanks!

2 months from documents received to printing - 1 month past estimate. Got very lucky with nurse witness being at the nurse office. They didnt call her cell she provided but called the hospital direct. She also recently changed hospitals so might have had to call two hospitals (unsure).

Very excited… started this process with Fbr July 2024…

I’m applying for my first Irish passport from the U.S. After my application was submitted, I was asked to provide additional identity documentation (a new witness identity verification form and a certified copy of my U.S. passport).
I mailed everything back using priority mail. When I spoke with both the Passport Service and the Irish Consulate in Chicago, they told me these “secondary applications” are handled by a different section and may not take as long as a standard first-time passport application.
Has anyone been through this process?
How long did it take after they received your additional documents?
Did your online application status change while they were reviewing the new documents?
How long after they acknowledged receipt was your passport issued?

I need help:( I applied to my eutr visa on the 18th of february, on the 17th of july i was requested more documents. I have tried to upload them for 3 days but it only shows 'failed to fetch'.

I have sent enquiries before but they all went unanswered, I sent a new one informing of this issue but i fear 28 days will go by and they'll make a decision without the documents they requested (which i have).

Is anyone in the same situation?

I heard that i can post them to the office in burgh quay, but im not too sure it's the right thing to do in this case...

I received my passport a few weeks ago but still haven’t received my card. When I contacted the webchat she told me that there was a delay in printing them. Does anyone one know what’s going on and how delayed they are in sending them out?

We just received the refusal for my husband’s stamp 4, I am a portuguese passport holder living jn Ireland and my husband has a student visa in Ireland going to expire in early august. The explanation letter says we submmited the paper work in the name of the sponsor (me) and we should have done it on my husband’s immigration profile (which is crazy to think how thick in the head they are, as what difference does it make if all the other documents are completely correct??????)

I am writing here to ask for help if anyone has gone through this and if there’s any appeal we can do, or if you know any lawyer that would be able to help.

I am still waiting to hear back about my FBR registration. I recieved the documents accepted email in August 2025. So this was over 11 months ago. Is this normal? Has anyone from this date period been accepted yet? Thanks

I know it hasn't even been a full month, just would love to know if we are due to get the certificate soon!
