my_qualifications: 3rd Year B .Tech Civil Engineering student at a Tier 2 college with a 9+ CGPA.
Hi everyone,
I am in my early 20s and currently a 3rd-year student. Mentally, I am completely lost. I feel like I’m stuck in a dark tunnel with no light at the end, constantly anxious about my future.
To be honest, I feel like I’m only good at studying. If someone gives me academic material, I absorb it like a sponge and clear exams, but I feel like I’m average at everything else and lack practical direction.
Here is my situation:
- The Problem with Civil: I do not like the civil engineering career path. The job profiles offered by PSUs, ESE, and private firms do not appeal to me, and I find the field too risky. While I could prepare for the GATE exam, I have no genuine interest or passion for it.
- The Tech Pivot Attempt: Because I wanted out of civil, I tried moving into tech. I started with web development, but I got stuck in "tutorial hell." Whenever I faced a coding problem, I immediately relied on AI (ChatGPT/Gemini) instead of problem-solving on my own.
- The Cycle of Quitting: After web dev, I tried jumping into Blockchain. I realized I have a terrible pattern: I start with huge enthusiasm, but I get stuck, lose motivation, and quit halfway through. I haven't been able to finish a single domain properly.
Right now, I don't even know if a tech career suits me because I don't feel a genuine passion for it. I am stuck in a loop of starting, stopping, and panicking.
At this point, I am just looking for stability. I am open to looking for any job, irrespective of the domain, as long as it gets me on a stable path after graduation.
- How do I break out of this loop of quitting things halfway?
- Given my academic background but lack of interest in Civil/Core Tech, what other alternate career paths or non-tech corporate roles (like analytics, consulting, or management) should I look into?
- If you’ve been in this exact spot during engineering, how did you find your way out?
I would love to hear your honest advice and opinions. Thank you so much.
