Mandela Effect?

This post is partly satire, well the heading is!!

Since the age of 9ish I was a big fan of Phil Collins. In 44 now. I remain a big fan of his, probably my favourite ā€œartistā€. I attended the Genesis gig in Scotland and a previous show Phil did there in 2006. Have all his albums, as a child I obsessively read the wee booklets from the cassettes or CD’s page to page. I could ā€œsingā€ along to vast majority of his songs from start to finish.
All sounds fine, right?

One problem; I was getting the words wrong to ā€œIn The Air Tonightā€ every time, for years, decades.

ā€œI can feel it coming in the air tonight…..hold on…hold on..ā€

It’s very obviously ā€œoh lord….oh lordā€.

I’m the only one right? How is this possible?

Tonight, Tonight, Tonight is the ultimate late-period Genesis track

So as many say, the Genesis albums of the 1980s are an example of a band preserving their roots through the medium of a more commercially palatable sound. I would say they do this quite well, as each album contains both material that is commercially viable, as well as longer pieces which long-time listeners can really dig into.

Tonight, Tonight, Tonight from Invisible touch I feel goes a step further than this - in one song it combines the idea of a multi-part Progressive Rock song (longer than anything on The Lamb, ATOTT and ATTWT), with an infectious refrain and production style which fits with other contemporaneous pop music. It reached no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was used in Michelob commercials around the time of the album’s tour.

It has a dark, atmospheric sound very similar to Mama, and has an incredible moment of payoff after the middle instrumental interlude in the ā€˜you keep telling me…’ bridge. It’s a track which has such confidence, and sounds like it’s been produced by a band which knows they are about to become one of the biggest acts in the world. Although the lyrics don’t exactly hold up next to Wordsworth, the song overall shows a band in touch with musical complexity and progression, but also ready to embark on a career-defining world tour. There isn’t really a larger point I wish to make, other than that to me, TTT may well be the point at which the band’s commercial and artistic merits experience the greatest overlap.

(Also the single edit is horrible)

I really like Peter Gabriel's storytelling here, and I especially like Tony Banks's parts on this one

I got into Genesis last year, by listening to A Trick of the Tail. Dance on a Volcano just clicked.

I love ATOTT, Selling England by the Pound, Duke and Abacab. Slowly getting into Foxtrot and Wind & Wuthering. Haven’t messed with the other albums, yet.

Happy to add this one to the collection for only €5, in decent shape. What’s the consensus on this live album?

Instrumentals

One of the reasons I love Genesis is because of the many beautiful instrumental passages. Supper's Ready of course us full of them. My favorite is Peter's flute piece. What are your favorites?

Of course I had to visit the nearest record store. Abacab and But Seriously… only set me back tenner each! Man on the Corner is a killer track, although Abacab as a whole sounds rather better live imo.
