I checked them out at Best Buy. I was gonna get the Fold 8 Ultra, but after seeing the Fold 8, I'm torn. The Fold 8 is pretty neat and stands out.

Question/Help Hesitating on the Fold 8 upgrade from Fold 7 (camera downgrade vs form factor)

Post image
212 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I currently have the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and I'm on the fence about upgrading to the Fold 8.

On paper, the camera on the base Fold 8 feels like a clear downgrade from the Fold 7's 200MP main setup and triple lens layout. It feels weird to drop that kind of money to end up with a downgraded camera setup.

At the same time, the form factor is a huge factor for me. I've never fully gotten comfortable with the tall, narrow candy-bar feel of the cover screen on the Fold 7. The wider ratio on the Fold 8 looks a lot more natural for daily typing.

So I'm stuck between a few choices:

- Upgrade to the standard Fold 8 for the wider, better outer aspect ratio and live with the camera trade-offs.

- Look into the Fold 8 Ultra (though the price is steep and it keeps a taller profile).

- Just hold onto my Fold 7 for another generation and deal with the narrow cover screen.

For those who are making a similar jump or tested the wider form factors, is the improved front screen usability enough to offset the camera step back?

Downloaded a sample Manga page example and opened full screen in the photos app. Cover screen comparison and opened(wide is in portrait). Ignore the color shade shift, my camera was bugging out.

Honestly the only difference when holding these phones is, do I care about stretching a bit to type on the cover screen of the fold wide or do I want to shift my grip to reach the top on the ultra. Both phones ergonomically, for my tiny ass hands have a trade off, be it vertical reach or width. For me ill go wide, its not much of a reach for the key card and I prefer it over the dance to reach the top. I consume short form content so cameras and flex mode and youtube are not my primary use cases.

Impression/Review Fold Wide: here's proof of my concern about new wide screen form

If Samsung doesn't implement a protocol regarding Fold Wide's screen resolution even paying pluses to app developers, we'll have to continue using the screen in that way.

So many dollars wasted to see so much "white space"

Impression/Review Went to best buy and got hands on with both new Folds (I have planned on the wide this whole time)

Both devices are extremely well made and the crease is gone! literally cant even feel it with your fingers. Inner screen on both look so much better now that reflections are mostly gone, seems to take less fingerprints too

i played around with both phones and even in best buy the wides camera was clearly not as good. the ai zoom correction was pretty nice though!

Basically when opened, videos and movies are the same size - you just have less screen on the wide so less bars. But you dont get any extra video which is kinda crazy.

I decided on the wide the second it was confirmed and preordered it this morning.

Unfortunately after holding both, briefly playing with them and factoring in the costs there is just no way you would want the wide UNLESS the form factor is your only decision. Just the thought of paying close to 2k for all the compromises the wide has vs paying $300 more for the ultra....its just hard to take.

Again, 15 minutes is not enough time to truly understand the nuances but it was a pretty big eye opener to have them side by side.

ALSO BIG BIG - the wide does not have a flex hinge. it is either open or closed. You can manually force flex mode but there really is no point since there is no way to have the phone stay half open/closed

Tips/Tutorials Galaxy pre order WARNING tip!

I know many of us are all hot n horny to reserve their new generation devices!

Just remember, it sometimes pays to wait until the end of the period to reserve. Yes you might get your date pushed back a little but the deals get better and the other add-ons from sites that rhyme with "Hadouken" will have a higher cashback amount me the last few days of the reserve window.

If you have the money and don't care, phuck it, we ball!

If not, just be a little more patient. We've waited so long already, so what's 10 more days or so?!?!?

Happy fold day ladies and gents! 🫡

The fold 8 is tiny and looks much smaller than in YouTube reviews. I advise you to go and see it in person in store. I also thought oh wow perfect form factor etc but when you go and see it in person you will see the original OG form factor is still the best. The fold might be wider but the text also shrinks so best to check it with your own eyesight and view point. I know you can rotate etc but a like for like view point

Discussion Can we please stop the unneeded hate for the wide Fold 8? Options exist for a reason.

I get it. You don’t like the new passport-style aspect ratio. It’s not for you. But there is absolutely no need to hate on the people who actually love it, or act like Samsung ruined the lineup.

The standard wide form factor actually solves huge pain points for a lot of us:

The Outer Screen is Actually Usable: No more cramped typo-ridden typing on a tiny narrow cover display.

Better Ergonomics: The shorter body makes it way easier to reach the top of the screen with one hand.

Unfolded Content: The aspect ratio feels great for multitasking and media without constantly rotating the device.

If you absolutely hate the wide footprint and want that traditional, premium slab feeling, Samsung literally gave you an option. You can buy the Fold 8 Ultra. The choice is there.

Different form factors exist because people have different preferences. If the standard Fold 8 isn't your vibe, that’s fine! But let the people who have been waiting for a wider outer screen enjoy their device in peace.

I went to the store right after work to check it out, I have a fold 7 and honestly I was a bit iffy about the fold 8 but after checking it out and holding it in hand I am impressed it seems like something I would enjoy. I am definitely getting one I had the flip 6 before the fold 7 and this is just the hybrid I would love to have.

Impression/Review The Wide is Too Short

I watched a lot of reviews last night. EVERY ONE of them favored the wide. It's a little weird.

Fortunately, Best Buy has them on display so I'll spend the next few days visiting, playing with them.

My first impression after 20 minutes at BB yesterday: the wide is too short. My news and calendar/work widgets would be shorter and show less information and, generally, I'd have to scroll more to access more information on apps and websites.

Unfolded, watching YouTube, which I do every night, would also show virtually the same viewing area as the ultra when I rotate the ultra to landscape.

Ultra also has a slightly bigger battery.

Don't care about cameras (or "the crease").

I'll keep an open mind but as of now, I'm asking: other than the hype that comes with the novelty, why the wide, exactly?

Discussion Every tech reviewer I've watched on YouTube is going with the Fold 8 (wide)

Has anyone else been binging tech youtube today and noticed this? I swear all of the big tech guys have said they are going with the wide fold and love the form factor. Makes me excited to have pre ordered one after not being able to decide between that and the ultra.

Discussion Can’t make it to a Samsung store? Here’s how the new Galaxy foldables compare

If you’re still deciding between the new Galaxy foldables, these comparisons might help

The images show all three devices both folded and unfolded, making it easier to get a sense of their size before seeing them in person

Hope this helps.

Discussion am i crazy or is battery the most exciting part of the z fold 8 ultra?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey yall, i want honest thoughts pls. so i feel like everyone wants some huge wow features every year when it comes to new phone releases. meanwhile i'm over here looking at the battery specs every time because my fold7 gets absolutely bullied on busy work days 😭 i'll spend half the day bouncing between meetings, notes, spreadsheets and split screen apps, then suddenly i'm in battery saver before i'm even heading home. which sucks tbh

the z fold 8 ultra seems cool, i like the new features however my main thing is if i can get through a full work day and maybe a happy hour lol without my battery being useless... im hella practical so maybe thats why i feel like that

Approved Live stream Fold Wide requests video. Thoughts?

Folks, mods have been chatting, and after the mammoth amount of really niche questions we had, we were thinking of doing a live stream with the fold wide, where you guys can stack a ton of requests for apps, uses and so on.

It's not a cheap phone, the aspect ratio is rather unique, so obviously anyone wanting to buy it wants their specific questions answered.

So basically a "you request it, I'll do it live".

Because clearly the wide is getting a LOT of attention, and there are so many specific niche questions you guys want answers to which the average YouTube video just won't cover.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thought we could try something a bit unique rather than the boring standard videos you have to watch

Deals/Discounts Pro Tip: Samsung VIP gives free 2 year Care+

Add $149 Samsung VIP and 2 year Care+ to your cart and the 2 year Care+ is $0.

You MUST get the 2 year Care+ when purchasing the phone. You cannot get the deal after. If you've already ordered you need to cancel and re-order if you want the deal.

You can CANCEL the Samsung VIP before the 1 year renewal (wait at least 30 days or they will refund everything) and KEEP the 2 year Care+.

What's the advantage here? VIP gives the $0 2 year Care+ deal on up to 4 phones per year. If you buy any more phones you get insurance on those too. 2 year Care+ is also $269 so you are saving money.

Source: I did this last year. I just cancelled VIP a week ago. My 2 year Care+ is still active on Servify. It's also explicitly stated in the VIP terms you keep the 2 year contract.

edit: This is a USA deal, I'm not sure if other countries have the VIP Care+ offer.

edit2: There is a slight bug right now. If you want the deal add VIP to cart (hit Enroll on the VIP link below). Then go buy the phone and add 2 year Care+. It will show $269 in the cart. Delete the Care+. Then click the button below the phone to add Care+ and select the 2 year and hit okay. Now it will show free.

I did this using the Shop Samsung App.
