Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get some workflow advice or pointed toward some good tutorials.
I’m trying to model a replacement stock for my Glenfield Model 60. I’m a creative guy and I like making my gear my own. My ultimate goal is to design a custom stock, but my "Step 1" is just seeing if I can even replicate the organic look and feel of the original wooden stock as a practice exercise.
(Note: I know the photos with the rulers aren't perfectly accurate due to camera lens distortion, but this is just for practice to get the workflow down).
My Skill Level: I’m entirely self-taught via YouTube. I’ve 3D printed about 90% of the things I design, including my fair share of angled grips, braces, adapters, and chassis parts. I’m very comfortable with mechanical designs—extruding blocks, making holes, filleting, and the occasional loft.
The Problem: This stock is the biggest CAD challenge I’ve taken on, and I am way out of my league when it comes to organic shapes.
As you can see in the attached pictures, I’ve modeled the basic side-view and top-view cutouts. (I still need to cut the receiver and trigger guard areas, but I know how to do that—that's the least of my worries right now).
My issue is that I can't make the stock look rounded and organic. I tried using the Fillet tool to round over the harsh edges of my cutouts, but because of the angles and sharp turns, Fusion won't let me fillet past 1mm before the geometry breaks.
What I need help with: How do you actually approach a shape like this? Is trying to fillet a blocky extrusion the completely wrong workflow? Should I be using the Forms/T-Splines workspace, Surface modeling, or a bunch of complex lofts?
I am an automotive guy and plan on getting a 3D scanner eventually for custom performance mods. But I know that even if I scan this stock, it just gives me a 3D mesh—it doesn't actually teach me how to model the organic CAD surfaces over it.
If anyone can offer some guidance on the right workflow, or link a video of someone modeling something similar with organic curves, I’d massively appreciate it.
