FF XII FF12 Fatal error on steam
Help!
I'm playing through ff12 for the first time on steam. I've sunk 50 hours into it (at the Gate of Earth- idk how far that is but it looks end-gamey) and was playing it totally fine one day, and then the next I constantly have a crash on startup with a popup saying "fatal error has occurred"
I saw a recommendation to validate the files on steam and I did that and it worked, for one gaming session.
I played again the next same crash, validate the files, doesn't work and game crashes again.
I'm really scared of losing my progress, honestly I don't think I'll go back to ff12 again or if I do it'll be the last game in my playthrough.
I'm playing on my laptop through steam, I took a break for a while and started playing again this past week, the issue started yesterday.
Any potential fixed out there?

FF XI Regarding the FFXI Novels
I have acquired the full set of these FFXI novels (in German) a few months ago and noticed that none of these seem to have an English translation. Is there demand in here for a translation of all 10 novels from German into English, which were translated from Japanese into German?

FF IV Ranking Final Fantasy 4: The After Years Tales: Porom’s Tale
Have the After Years on my mind recently due to replaying it for a dumb rewrite thing I’m doing for it. I know the game in general isn’t liked but I’m curious about how people feel about the individual Tales so I’m doing a little tierlist thing for fun.
Today is Porom’s Tale: The Vanishing Lunar Whale.
This might be my least favourite tale in the game story wise. Why? Because Porom feels like a side character in her own goddamn story. The flashbacks around her and Palom feel like they belong more in Palom’s story since they’re about his ambitions to be a sage while the last part is just her on a fetch quest for Kain.
Also, minor gripes, it doesn’t even focus on the “Vanishing Lunar Whale”, it has us going to the Underground Waterway which happens way too often in this game and I don’t like that they gave Porom Pray. I get they wanted to show her as being more mature and not crying anymore but just giving her Rosa’s old unique command is boring.
I won’t deny there’s good stuff in it like seeing the twins bond be broken in both story and gameplay (you can use the twincast band in the Kaipo flashback when they’re still kids but not in the Rydia flashback when they’re older), it’s nice to see “Kain” again and it’s funny how quickly he betrays the party this time. But overall, I’d give the tale as a whole a D.

Dissidia [OC] Dissidia Final Fantasy Dream Roster (2-3): Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier (“Glenn Lodbrok”). A relentless soldier—the first of his kind—seeks his true calling, only to be swept far beyond into even more distant lands!
I actually did think of making a default character the protagonist for TFS, but in the process, I noticed how very hard Squenix tried to shove Glenn and his team down the collective throats of the fandom, so I figured, eh, might as well give it to Glenn. I played the TFS briefly, and although I find it nothing very, very special, I’d say the outcome was kind of fairly decent, and the effort Squenix had placed for the narrative was at least commendable, even bringing Glenn into Rebirth. Like I said, I find FF in different genres somewhat refreshing, and even in the short life span TFS had, I’d say the rumble game at least made someone happy. In any case, I actually thought Glenn was a good enough character, that maybe I could have put him in a Dissidia dream roster as Ever Crisis’s protag, but I ultimately decided TFS should get him.
Any way, I hope you like ‘em.

FF IV So I'm playing FF4 on my DS and Im kinda confused
Just as a background, the only ff Ive played before this is og 7 but i dropped that at the part where chocobos are introduced because i was getting frustrated with the chocobo catching mechanic.
Now a year later , I've been putting off starting it up again despite wanting to play it again. But i found out my 250 in 1 DS games cartridge has FF 4 and 3 and thought playing one of those should be lower commitment , so i started on 4.
What confuses me is why does 4 have better graphics than 7 in some places? Like theres a full scale opening cutscene that looks as good as the newer final fantasy games , yet ff7 never had anything like that? Also its got 3d cutscenes as good if not better than 7. Plus the battles are 3d and maybe the normal gameplay is 3d too(it has a 2d vibe so cant tell). I thought ff 1-6 were pixel games?
The opening cutscene especially confuses me, considering kitase is the one who pushed for realism in these games, yet the first game he worked on which was 7 didnt have this quality for the prerendered cutscene
Also, this is no shade to 7, i loved how 7 looked , just curious how the graphics are better in a way older game
Edit : ok i just realized im playing a 3d remake lol, didnt know that existed, my DS just said Final Fantasy 4 , so i thought it was the og

FF VII / Remake Played FF7 for the first time
I played FF7 for the first time and finished it last night. WOW what a game. The story actually made me cry when Aerith died and seeing cloud slowly deteriorate mentally. I loved the materia system so much. I was so invested I actually mastered every summon materia 3 times including knights of the round. I also mastered elemental and status materia 3 times as well. 175 hours later, this was quite a ride and one I really enjoyed. The only thing I hated were the mini games. I loved beating Ruby and emerald weapons. From fighting dyne in an emotional battle to getting Vincent’s level 4 limit, it was amazing. Also the wall market theme is sitting rent free in my head

FF II 100%ing Every Mainline Final Fantasy: FF II Review (3 of 18) Spoiler
Version: Pixel Remaster (Steam)
Back into release order, we have Final Fantasy II: the notorious sequel that everyone is eager to throw in the trash. It did everything wrong! Maybe that was true in 1988; THAT version is not what Steam had for sale 😊
So… is its reputation deserved? Let’s find out. Join me as I recount my personal journey through Final Fantasy II. Let’s go save the rebellion!
What It Does Well
· The story is a genuine step forward from FFI, especially given this was an NES release in 1988. Is it amazing by today’s standards? No, but themes of loss, betrayal, sacrifice, oppression and rebellion give the game far more narrative than its predecessor.
· Game over immediately once gameplay begins? Genius. It immediately establishes just how hopeless the rebellion's situation really is.
· I genuinely appreciated the variety in locations. The world feels lived in instead of simply existing as a backdrop, and Pandaemonium was an incredibly creative final dungeon.
· Seeing the world change around you, such as Altair coming under attack, helped sell the scale of the conflict.
· The Emperor grew on me as a villain. He's responsible for your family's death, drives nearly every major event in the story, and even recognizes you after each defeat. His constant presence made him feel far more personal than I expected.
· Even if the cast is still fairly simple, having party members who actually speak and interact with the world gave the story far more personality than FFI.
· Completing the bestiary was actually fun; I felt that the rarities of different monster groups made the bestiary grind more intentional, but not fully mindless for hours on end (if we ignore Iron Giant…)
· Random encounters stayed engaging because they usually required balancing physical attacks, magic, and healing instead of simply mashing Auto-Battle.
· New equipment usually felt like a genuine power spike, which was incredibly satisfying... assuming you had actually leveled that weapon type. Find a shiny new axe with a level 2 in axe? Good luck.
· What a way to introduce Cid. A legendary engineer, rebellion leader, sacrifices himself for the cause, then gives you his airship to finish the mission. (Sorry... lends.) Amazing beginning for an iconic FF staple.
· Guy speak beaver.
What Doesn’t Hold Up
· Dude, the dungeon design was brutal. It often felt like the goal was simply to pad playtime rather than create interesting exploration. The constant zig-zagging became exhausting... and that's with the Pixel Remaster minimap. I can't imagine doing this on the original release.
· That wasn't helped by the encounter rate, especially in trap rooms. I didn't discover the "No Encounters" boost until Pandemonium, so most of the game's dungeons felt like an endless slog.
· HOT TAKE ALERT! While I love most Final Fantasy soundtracks, this one felt like a step back from FFI. The simple, memorable melodies of the first game never really materialized for me here, except for the Wild Rose theme. None of the overworld, town, or Chocobo themes stuck with me. They're not bad, they’re just surprisingly forgettable.
· Speaking of Chocobos... what a missed opportunity. I only used one once because every additional ride required trekking back to the Chocobo Forest. Sure, they prevent random encounters, but you have to survive all the random encounters just to reach them.
· I appreciate what the leveling system was trying to accomplish, but the balance never quite worked for me. In practice, you're heavily encouraged to stick with the same weapons and spells all game because switching later leaves you dramatically underpowered.
o Also, having everyone punch monsters to death because bare hands are optimal is... not exactly immersive.
· The missables are frustrating. I don't necessarily fault a game from 1988 for having them, but as someone going for 100%, realizing I had permanently missed weapons and treasure, and needed another playthrough to fix it… was rough.
· Ironically, I found most random encounters harder than the bosses. I'd limp into each boss with almost no MP or items left, but because the dungeons had already forced me through dozens of difficult encounters, I was so overleveled that nearly every boss melted in a few turns.
· Finding the Iron Giant… why?
Biggest Surprise
I was fully expecting to hate Final Fantasy II based on its reputation. Instead, I came away thoroughly enjoying it. Does it show its age? Absolutely. Are there some baffling design decisions? Without question. But the Pixel Remaster smooths over many of the roughest edges, allowing the game's biggest strength, its surprisingly ambitious story, to shine through. Rather than feeling like a failed sequel, FFII felt like a bold experiment that didn't always succeed, but took meaningful steps forward for the series. And that exceeded my expectation far beyond where I thought the experience was going.
Biggest Swing
The idea behind FFII’s leveling system was remarkably ahead of its time. Improving weapons, spells, and attributes through repeated use became a foundational concept in later RPGs and MMOs, with games like The Elder Scrolls and RuneScape embracing similar “use it to improve it” progression systems.
The implementation here is often unbalanced and tedious, but the ambition behind it deserves credit. It shows how much experimentation and ingenuity went into FFII’s battle system, and, in hindsight, hints at what the genre would eventually become.
That said, I respect what they attempted far more than I enjoyed the consequences of it.
How Was the 100%?
I really wish the Treasure Hunter achievement was shared across saves like the Bestiary was, because replaying large portions of the game just to recover a few missed chests was rough.
I also discovered efficient ways to grind the Level 16 weapon and spell achievements far later than I would've liked, making those achievements feel more tedious than they probably needed to be.
Overall, though, this wasn't a terrible 100%. A couple of achievements overstayed their welcome, especially with how slow high-level progression becomes, but nothing ever felt truly impossible.
If you’re going to 100% this, do yourself a favor and use a guide, just so you don’t have to backtrack with missable chests and monsters.
Final Thoughts
Sacrifice. What are you willing to give up for what you believe in?
It's a theme woven throughout Final Fantasy II. A prince who hides his love so he won't burden his betrothed. A father who gives his life for both the rebellion and his daughter's future. A dragoon who knowingly sacrifices himself, ending his bloodline to stand against the Empire. A white mage who casts a spell so powerful it costs him his life, allowing the party to wield the ultimate magic.
For all of FFII's mechanical flaws, there is a genuinely compelling story underneath it. I expected to hate this game, yet I constantly found myself wanting to keep going—whether to see what happened next or simply to continue the journey.
I understand the original NES release earned much of its reputation, and I can't fairly speak to that version. But the Pixel Remaster felt like it finally gave those ideas room to shine. It's not perfect, and it won't be for everyone. I enjoyed the game itself more than FFI, even if I enjoyed the 100% a little less. Did it drag at times? Sure. Was it unbalanced? Definitely. But was it fun?
Absolutely.
Give it a try. If you don't like it, that's completely fair. But you just might surprise yourself.
I know I did.
Best Achievement: Field Research Professional – I genuinely enjoyed completing the Bestiary. Square struck a great balance between encouraging exploration and rewarding persistence. Yes, grinding for the Iron Giant was a pain, but I legitimately fist-pumped when that achievement finally popped.
Worst Achievement: Magic Tactics – Treasure Hunter was frustrating because it required another playthrough, but this one was simply exhausting. Grinding a spell to Level 16 felt painfully slow, especially with MP costs scaling alongside spell level. I felt like I spent more time running to inns than actually casting spells. And yes... I learned after unlocking it that you can spam Cure from Level 1 to 16 in about ten minutes.
Time to Beat: 11.5 hours
Time to 100%: TBD hours (guessing about 16)
Completionist Verdict: Worth the 100%, but please use a missables guid
Rating: 7 Iron Giants out of 10

FF X/X2 Can we stop using "you just didn't understand it" to defend the laughing scene in FFX?
Every time this scene gets brought up, half the comments are just people echoing the same thing. "you missed the point, it's SUPPOSED to be fake and forced!"
Yeah. We know. Everyone gets it. it's an incredibly basic scene. Not even remotely deep or hard to understand.
Yuna is dealing with a ton of stress and and Tidus is trying to cheer her up by forcing themselves to fake laugh as a coping mechanism. The narrative reason behind it isn't complex, and nobody is missing the thematic intent.
The problem is that understanding why a scene exists doesn't magically make the execution good. The voice acting is so abrasive that knowing the context doesn't fix how awful it actually is to listen to. A scene can be intentionally awkward and still be genuinely bad that kills the momentum of the moment.
It's a completely unbelievable interaction based on how it was actually scripted and voice acted.

Just made what I thought would be a nice dissidia roster, should they ever make another proper one. I feel like I shouldve added more FFCC characters and made Layle base roster, but I lowkey got lazy 🥲

Final Fantasy General Is the idea that your first Final Fantasy will end up being your favorite as common as people say it is?
I’m just curious to see how many people in this subreddit have had the same experience. I started with VII and it immediately became my favorite game ever. I think it has to do with getting to experience the combat systems and mechanics of a Final Fantasy for the first time. I think that first experience really sticks with you above all else. I’m curious to hear about people who started with a favorite and then changed their minds when playing later games as well!

Final Fantasy General Con quale Final Fantasy iniziare?
