So, since I had the displeasure of encountering one of these crazy entitled people firsthand, and I can think clearly now since I'm no longer in a lot of pain after having my wisdom teeth removed, I guess I'll drop it here. This happened about a week ago, on the 14th.
It was in the early afternoon. My mother (65F), my uncle (59M) and I (35M) were on our way to the store to pick up a few things for me (store name starts with a W. If you know, you know). I had my wisdom teeth removed 6 days earlier, the dentist that took them out never stitched me up, and I was restricted mostly to liquids and really soft foods till the holes closed up enough where I could start eating more normally again. I was out of things I could eat at home, so we made a grocery run after swinging by the dentist's office for my mother's checkup.
We pulled into the parking lot and grabbed our space in the handicapped section up front. There were two of those electric shopping carts right in front of the car by the signpost, just left there by other shoppers who'd long since took off. My mother and I got out and we each took one, my uncle stayed in the car to keep the AC going. As we were heading towards the entrance of the store, my mother was far enough ahead that she didn't hear it, but I heard a guy yelling behind us in the parking lot "Obesity ain't a disability! You lazy fat fucks have no business taking those chairs, you can fucking walk!", I turned and looked while we were still going, and there was this angry guy several parking spaces back, he was older than me, younger than my mother, and he looked kind of like a very scroungy Chumlee (just to give you a visual), and he walked with a slight limp. As my mother and I entered the store, I heard him shooting off his mouth again at some random guy in the parking lot about us, having a hissy fit about my mother and I taking the electric carts.
Now, for some context, yes, my mother and I are both obese, but we're are also legally declared disabled for different reasons, and we have a handicap placard in our car. My mother used to work at Safeway as a fuel attendant years back, and in 2007 while my mother was at work, she got ran over by a elderly customer that wasn't paying attention and then drove off, which fucked up my mother's hip and lower back, she's also got problems with her knees from years of various falls, along with arthritis setting in multiple places. My mother has had to walk with a cane ever since, and she cannot stand long or walk long distances anymore. She can't walk an entire grocery store even with her cane, and needs one of those carts in order to get through her shopping.
As for myself, I have severe lymphedema in both my legs, venous stasis, lower back issues caused from falling down a flight of icy stairs years ago, and I also have starting of arthritis in the lower back. I lose feeling in my legs after standing longer than 15 minutes before they give out and I fall down, then I can't get up again without help. Plus, I have learning disabilities and chronic mental health issues.
Both of us are disabled, and it's not specifically because of our weight, it's because of other reasons. As much as we want to lose the weight and we struggle with it, we can't do it with ordinary diet and exercise. My mother for obvious reasons can't, and on top of my own issues I have severe asthma that prevents me from strenuous activity, my inhalers barely take the edge off. We are both looking into alternative means to get rid of the weight, like Zepbound. But we're getting slightly off topic here. The point of the matter is this asshole sees two people with a weight problem, and instead of realizing like a decent human being that there's some disabilities you can't see, he decides to verbally attack and later harass us, more on that in a minute. My mother's neon pink cane was even visible in the cart's basket, which the loudmouth "conveniently" missed.
Now mind you, I was in pain and couldn't speak, and was discouraged from talking by the dentist, so inside the store I had to use creative means to tell my mother that something was up when i got the chance to. Meanwhile, after the rant in the parking lot, the guy decided to come in the store, grabbed a regular shopping cart and started stalking my mother and I through the store while acting like he was just there to shop. Wherever my mother and I went, no matter the aisle, produce, canned goods, pet food, he was there glaring at us and following us around while making snide comments and grabbing random items off the shelves and aggressively putting them into his cart. It was obvious he was stalking us around the store, my mother didn't notice right away.
When we finally got over to the frozen foods, I managed to tell my mother about what was going on after I got her to give me a pen and paper from her purse to write shit down. I told her what the guy said out in the parking lot, his little rage fit, him stalking us and his menacing behavior. My mother went over and confronted him with her cane in hand, asking if he had a problem and he got aggressive towards her "Yeah, I do got a fucking problem, bitch! Obesity isn't a disability, you lazy fat fucks can walk!" Completely dismissing that my mother was holding a cane in her hand. Kind of surprised my mother didn't whack him with it, repeatedly. But I imagine had he moved one step closer she would've.
When it was time to checkout, my mother got in line and told me to go out to the car and tell my uncle what was going on. So I parked the cart and went out and showed him the paper I wrote on, and my uncle went inside looking for the guy. When he went in there and confronted the guy at the checkout line, a fight almost broke out. I wasn't present for it, I'd stayed in the car because my face was throbbing at this point from being stressed out. My mother told me it was a loud shouting match with my uncle in that guy's face, and the guy was not backing down. My uncle got escorted from the store by 4 different managers to our car, where my uncle informed them of the guy's behavior and that he'd went inside to confront the guy because we felt threatened by his behavior. Luckily he didn't get banned, but the other guy did, especially after he'd checked out and came out into the parking lot starting more shit near where we were parked with the managers standing there.
Some people just have no couth. Especially the entitled ones. Hope getting banned from that store was worth being an asshole over. smh
Edit: Since a few users have issue with a few things, I'll clear them up here.
First, the store had 10 electric carts, not 2 or 3. Just because the stores you've been to only had that amount of electric carts doesn't mean all stores carry the same amount everywhere, plus there were other carts inside the store waiting to be used in the charging area, there was no excuse why the guy couldn't have grabbed another one for himself, he was choosing to be a dick.
Second, my uncle didn't go in instead of me, because he didn't feel like going in, simple as that. He also has diabetes, and often prefers to remain in the car, and he wasn't feeling the greatest that day, and since my mother can't drive anymore, he takes us on grocery runs, he's our only method of transportation. He only went inside after learning we were being threatened.
Third, my mother needs help with things, I've already stated the reasons why that is, and since my uncle who's not "able-bodied" like someone sarcastically pointed out, and he wasn't feeling well enough to go inside and walk the entire store helping her shop, I went inside to help her even though I have issues myself, my mother needs help. The fact that a couple other users have a problem with a mother and her kid going in the store together, and that they both need motorized carts, it baffles me. If you've got a problem with a son helping his mother who's got physical challenges, and that son has disabilities of his own where he needs a powered cart himself, then maybe you need to take a course on learning what empathy is.
