Has anyone found a way to play the videos without stretching in 21:9?

I'm playing in 21:9 (3440x1440) on Win11 with an Nvidia GPU. I haven't found a way to play the videos in the game (e.g., the faction intros) without the videos being stretched horizontally. I've tried a number of ways to force the game to play the videos in their correct 16:9 resolution, but with no luck (besides switching my resolution to 16:9 before the video plays, and then switching back to 21:9 afterwards). Just curious if anyone has figured out a way to do this.

Is moving population around to optimize worth the effort?

Once I unlock spaceports I have a very strong urge to start moving pops around to optimize them. however...dear lord the interface for this is no fun. As far as I can tell all you can do is swap around between systems figuring out which pops are where and shift them around by hand while remembering the system you want them go to.

Thus my question; is it worth the effort? It seems like it would be for at least some of them. E.g. Mavros on hot planets and Sophons on cold. But its a very tedious job, especially later when my systems might two or there different types of population and multiple planet types colonized.

Second question: is there some easier way to figure out where pops are at, where they should be moved to, and to do that moving that I am missing?

I'm using 2 mods - ESG and Kaizen rejuvenation, for the first time.

Is this a bug or unusual? Or have I messed something up in the game settings?

Invading vs draft

Hey all, new to the game that's taken over my life recently. I feel good everywhere but here.. just how overwhelming do you need to be to actually finish a colony?

To be more specific

* How much cp and how many troops before you get the blitz option? I see it seemingly randomly sometimes, most the the time just preemptive and raid? I think the other option.

* Is it better to invade, retreat invade again or continue ground invasion after minor victories?

* Is there anything more you can do prior to invading after reducing their forces to 0?

The particular situation I'm in now for example

I have 2.2k troops, 24cp fleet invading with lvl3 invading forces (mostly tanks), 3-4 coordinators all with at least 3 manpower modules attacking a colony with 0manpower. And its looking like this will go on forever, feel like I'm going insane. Do I really need 20coordinators with 5+manpower modules each to finish off a 0pop colony?

I even have +invasion force laws active now that I think about it lol. I am playing with esg mod. Any help at all would be much appreciated I'm losing my mind over this.

Early Aggression and Fleet Composition.

I’ve recently started playing and have really been enjoying the game. Most of my games have been on normal difficulty and standard speed, where I end up winning with a science, economic, or wonder victory. I don’t typically do much aggressive play, just build up my systems and try to out produce the enemies. When I do enter conflict, it’s usually after I have medium ships and decent modules, so I can just make enough ships to hold my space and take the occasional system in response.

I wanted to fix this “idle” play style of mine, so I decided to play a game of Cravers. It’s about turn 100 and I’m just now getting medium ships, and the neighboring Sophons are almost defeated. But I feel like I’m behind the other closest civilizations (Riftborn and Vodyani) and the wonder how many fleets should look at this stage. I know you have to be aggressive as Cravers, but I don’t know if I’m being aggressive enough. Any tips? I can provide more information as needed.

Hissho - keeping others off my "lawn"

I think I have a general grasp of Hissho strategy.

* Keep small, maybe only two systems, and build as tall as possible.

* Keep a "lawn" of empty systems around you that you can mine with behemoths

* Get your home world into a gigantic beast of production and go for a science or economic victory (maybe Supremacy?)

My problem is that keeping my lawn clear after like turn 75 seems impossible. It's like whack a mole, as soon as I have cleared out somebody someone else is building an outpost there. I feel like I need at least enough empty systems around me to keep one pretty thoroughly upgraded mining behemoth dropping mine probes full time, but I can't get close to that.

What am I missing? Do I need lots more smaller fleets blockaded all these systems maybe? Do I need to just wipe out nearby empires more quickly to make space? Maybe my balance of money versus science versus production is off?

Any tips are appreciated. I feel like I have assimilated the info in the various guides one can find, and yet something is still not clicking for me.

Good tutorial for ES2?

I am virgin new to ES2. Looking for a good tutorial series. Any recommendations? Something to guide me through my first run, avoid stupid mistakes, explain the more complex points in the game, etc.

Thanks!

Demands from an Unknown Empire???

Post image
42 Upvotes

I'm on my first playthrough in the tutorial level. I've played civ before but I always kinda fumbled my way through it so I thought I'd really take the time to figure out how this game works. I'm 138 turns in. I've been threatened by the Cravers, but I was easily able to fend them off as my pirate fighting fleet was and is massive.

That said...What exactly is this nonsense? Accept an unreasonable and unachievable demand or get screwed for 10 turns?

Is this the normal type of "New Empire" encounter I should expect to see here? Is there a counter to things like this?

Questions from a New Player

Hello guys! I've played Civilization games before and am now playing Endless Space 2.

I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding what to focus on during the mid-game and how to work toward victory conditions. By the time I have explored over 50% of the map and met the major factions, I just get overwhelmed by choices. The micromanagement is getting out of hand, and I lose sight of the important things to do.

Even with research, I'm just clicking the recommended path without giving it a second thought. As for the Laws, there is so much text on the screen that I have a hard time digesting the information my brain just chokes, xd. Combat is the same way; there is just too much to manage, so I end up on auto-pilot, just picking whatever has the highest tier or the highest numbers.

At the moment, I'm just playing on Easy/Fast without any expansions enabled because, my god, I am just trying to learn the flow of the game

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions so I can have a smooth learning curve? Also, should I play pure vanilla until I win with all the factions and DLCs, and then move on to mods? Or are there any mods I should use right away? Right now, I'm just staring at the screen pressing "next turn" without really understanding what I should be doing.

What research should I be skipping?

There's a lot of "it depends" going on in this game about what's right, but what are the technologies that almost never pay off to get? There are a couple that never seem to work right for me because of timing (they would be good if you could build the stuff in them when they unlock, but the unlocked buildings are too expensive considering where they are in the tech tree).

Tips against Umbral Choir.

I'm at turn 110 I think as Nakalim and every turn I get drained by 1k dust and it's increasing. I've done the eliminate sleepers on all systems but it won't change so I think it's the Umbral somehow.

I've got anti-cloak 2 but can't see anything. What can I do? Any tips against Umbral is welcome!

Influence captures

Starting to get annoyed with these. Twice now an AI faction has pushed their influence to one of my systems, then *instantly* taken it over on the exact turn their influence reaches the system before I can even send them a cease and desist request for them to either accept or refuse.

Is there anything out there that makes it so that at least on turn 1, influence takeovers can't be done?

What do y’all think about a revolutionary faction?

Basically I would really enjoy a faction of Revolutionaries that’s trying to overthrow empires and assert itself. But how would that work in a 4X game? My ideas:

First of all, it would not make for them to start as just one of the empires, that defeats the purpose. They should function akin to the Umbral Choir in such they spread their influence and incite revolts but without the hacking mechanics (because I hate the hacking mechanics and I always play with that DLC turned off) Since all players start away from each other, and we wouldn’t want any one player to be basically screwed over by having a revolutionary faction on them from turn 1, the faction could either start as an uprising in a minor faction’s system, in an outpost like the Umbral Choir, a ship like the Vaulters OR (the most interesting option) there could be something like a „Fallen Empire”. Basically an Academy-like bot that’s more powerful then all others at the start but doesn’t evolve and is not overly expansionist, and the faction can start by overthrowing them. Then they would move on to other players and/or minor civilisations. But how would those revolts work?

My idea is that they could employ „civilian ships” similarly to how Vaulters can cloak their ships as „pirates”. Of course, this would need to be balanced, so all Empires should gain the ability to search civilian ships. But to make this balanced too, there should be a penalty for searches that find nothing, something like a temporary approval penalty. This is where my other idea comes in: the ability of this empire to perform revolutions would be tied to approval rating. So low approval ratings would enable greater and greater actions. However, depending on difficulty, by end game a lot of players can keep a permanent „ecstatic” level of approval on all systems. To combat this, a suite of ways to lower approval should be introduced, tied in to the „civilian” ships mechanic. The revolution itself, depending on the level of approval, could range from soemthing akin to the default revolt that just spawns a couple pirate ships, through an internal guerilla planetary invasion, to taking over the system in one turn. How to balance this??

Well, this faction, by virtue of being revolutionaries and not empire builders should get penalties to dust, industry and military. Perhaps disabling the chain-gang improvement, and giving them an alternative technology tree that does not focus on corporations and private industry, but rather on collective improvements. This could be counterbalanced by a much higher default colonisation cap, since the systems after a revolution are only „liberated” not integrated into a larger imperial structure. This faction should also have the ability to perform raids and loot enemy planets without patented invasions, say as an action that grounds a given fleet for 2-3 turns and gives moderate rewards.

Also, in order to preserve the ~Vibe~ of the faction I would introduce reskins of the already existing mechanics. For example, the government types could be called „One-Party” and „Mass-Line” instead of „Dictatorship” and „Democracy” (while being functionally the same). Same goes for „confederations of workers” instead of „companies” or „Collective Partnership” technology instead of „Public-Private Partnerships” technology.

Amplitude will probably never make this, as it infringes as little on the territory of the Umbral Choir (then again same goes for the Vaulters infringing on the Sophons), it is a bit too political and a faction like this would walk the fine line between being Insanely Overpowered and Entirely Irrelevant. It would also be very dependent on RNG in the early game, but that’s realistic as far as revolutions go (although not necessarily fun).

Let me know your thoughts on it and how it could function, or is it even possible to get such a function running (since it kinda goes against the 4X ideal).

PS: I realise this is kind of political, and I will not shy away from this aspect with my own politics, but please keep it civil.

Two civs set to colonize a system on the same turn

I encountered a situation where two civs, myself and a Riftborn CPU, were set to colonize the same system on the same turn.

I was curious to see who would win. It turns out that I ended up getting the following message and then, turn after turn, the colonization ends up getting stuck with one turn left with neither side successfully colonizing the system.

Blockading a Riftborn outpost didn't seem to do anything, so I ended up withdrawing my outpost, allowing the Riftborn to colonize the system, and invading the system immediately after.

Anyone else encounter this kind of situation before?

"No turn progress" bug

For the past few years, on most of my playthroughs, I've encountered a bug where the turn ends but progress like production and research don't advance. This bug appears to be distinct from the often discussed End Turn bug where the End Turn button doesn't even cause the turn counter to increment.

Upon clicking the End Turn button, the turn counter increments, but few if any other things in the game happen. In this state, clicking the End Turn button a second or third time continues to increment the turn counter but similarly does not advance the game.

The workaround I've been using was to load an earlier save game. That generally gets around the problem.

Yesterday, I experienced something different. I came across an autosave where I was able to reproduce the problem reliably with the following steps:

  1. Load autosave for turn 74
  2. Perform a set of actions like enqueuing system production and donating to the Academy
  3. Press End Turn button
  4. Game advances to turn 75 with Academy Roles getting assigned, but nothing else advancing like research or production
  5. Clicking End Turn again increments the turn counter to 76 but does not cause anything else to happen

I eventually worked around the problem by saving and loading right before pressing the End Turn button:

  1. Load autosave for turn 74
  2. Perform a set of actions like enqueuing system production and donating to the Academy
  3. Create a separate save
  4. Load that separate save
  5. Press End Turn button
  6. Game advances to turn 75 normally. A science with 1 turn left on turn 74 gets researched as expected. Production queues on my systems advance normally. I also get a new hero on this turn, which did not happen when the bug was in effect.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to create a copy of the turn 74 autosave and it has been lost, but I will hopefully encounter a save in the future when this problem can once again be reliably reproduced.

I originally thought this bug was caused by something that is difficult to reproduce like number overflow, but fortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Anyone else have additional insights on what triggers this bug and how to work around it?

Question about update and dlc before purchase

Hi,

I am considering buying Endless space 2 on gog during their summer sale. I really liked the first game and looking forward to play the second. There are two thing that I would appreciate if the community could help me with.

First, looking at the steam page for the game, there was quite a large update in the end of 2025. Is the gog version up to date or is it behind the steam version?

Second, should I buy the complete edition with all the dlc, or should I start with the vanilla version? Is the game considerably better with the dlc or is it still a complete game without it?

ES2 - I hate this game so much

Nothing else makes me lose track of time as badly as this game. It’s currently 2am and I’ve got work in the morning. Spent the last 9 hours sedentary looking at my screen clicking my mouse.

By the empire this game is great. Just the perfect level of chill music and “ just one more turn” mechanics.

What's the strat with city level?

So I just recently started playing, and I'm trying to figure out when I should be upgrading my city level. Is it something you try to do immediately with whatever you have? Do you wait for for industry or science materials to do it?

I'm not even sure if that's the tech to focus on, but it seems pretty common because those two tend to be useful regardless of race of victory condition. Any tips, tricks, or suggestions would be useful.

Did I get fights wrong?

I love the management side of ES2, it's so deep and I love developing the Empire through dust and approval, but when it comes to fight....I really dislike them. So I started thinking: am I doing it wrong?

When it comes to fight with another faction I follow this procedure:

- Check enemy's ship defense type (laser or physycal)

- Design a ship that does the opposite type of damage

- Repeat for the next enemy

It feels quite boring and repetitive. Is there something I'm missing?
