QUESTION Designer controls

In galactic civ 4, is there a mod or something to make the controls for the ship designer easier to use or better yet, make them behave like blender controls?

BUG | ISSUE Ship Designer glitch in GC4

Post image
8 Upvotes

It looks like parts of this ship have been blown off. I redownloaded this ship design that I personally made and this one looks terribly glitched. I believe that the problem started back in December of last year, around the time of the Terran DLC and I thought that this has to do with the new parts, but it didn't. This one is "Asteraid Frigate A" on the Steam Workshop (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3722879731)

ANNOUNCEMENT Galactic Civilizations IV - Federations & Empires Expansion Launches Jul 30, 2026

Federations & Empires launches July 30! The free v4.0 update will also launch the same day for every Galactic Civilizations IV owner, expansion or not.

The expansion adds four new governments, and each one replaces the entire Government screen with its own resource, core loop, and hero ship:

  • Oligarchy: three Councilors split power across Commerce, Industry, and Governance. Market forces shape the destiny of the civilization and the player focuses on investments, equities and political favors.
  • Technocracy: a continuous Optimization Grid replaces policies. Run simulations to preview outcomes. Players construct massive optimizers to send to their worlds who execute the player's instructions.
  • Empire: Imperial Decrees that scale with the size of your domain, vassal management, rebellions and a general focus on extracting as much as possible from vassals to empower the homeworld.
  • Federation: the apex civilian government. Players must build consensus with their worlds with the reward being partner worlds that are greater than the sum of their parts.

Version 4.0 also brings the free Colonial Charter starting government, a Map Editor for building and sharing your own galaxies, internal Political Parties, Leader run Institutions, a redesigned Diplomacy and Trade screen, and AI improvements across expansion, warfare, diplomacy, and government play.

What game should my group start with?

Me and a group of 7-8 of my friends get together and play strategy games every month or so. So far we have played civilization 4 a lot but I am trying to get them to take the leap into Sci-fi strategy games as I love games like stellaris. I know I want to play a Galactic Civilizations game with them but I don’t know which one. I am considering 2 through 4. I am leaning towards 3 though.

My group likes to play in a wireless lan and make it a big evening with dinner and all that, we don’t care about graphics but I would have a hard time selling them on Galactic civilizations one.

Any advice would be appreciated!

GalCiv 4 Receiving weird unclassified ships instead of correct reward ships?

For Galactic Civilizations IV. Sometimes when I'm supposed to receive reward ships, like the 3 Constructors for the first Pacifism cultural trait, I get unclassified ships with no modules. Usually they're called Baratak_Harvester_xxx, and can be for a different species than my player species. Is this supposed to happen, or a known bug?

I've seen 1 similar post from 2 months ago, but they didn't seem to get a clear answer, was thought to be a bug

DISCUSSION Steam sale DLC shopping, recommendations, discussions

Hi!

Big fan of the game (IV to be exact, since I didn't play others) and I do not play the game as much as I want because of life, work, other games etc. But I played like 30 hours or more and I think I am ready to play more of it in the future (especailly in this years summer break).

As the title suggests, what do you more experienced players recommend me to get DLC wise?

Megastructures probably since it looks fun and then what is something that you guys can't live without so to say :D

Played 2 as a kid, thinking about picking up one of the games on Steam. Is 3 with all DLC best?

Hi! as the title says, I played a lot of Gal Civ 2 when I was a kid. It and Heroes of Might and Magic 5 were kind of hand in hand as my favorite turn-based strategy games before Civ 5 got the Brave New World Expansion.

I played a bit of Gal Civ 3 when it released without expansions, but it didn't really live up to 2 for me at the time.

Now that I am a full-on adult with a job and money, I am interested in getting back into the series. What is best? 2 still? 3 with all the DLC? 4 with what DLC is out so far?

I would love a ranking, relative rating, or pro/con list for each of the games so that I can see what might fit best for me. If there's any DLC I should avoid I would love to hear that too.

Thank you!

GAME UPDATE GalCiv IV v3.31 is out: crash fixes, ship hull rebalance, pollution and diplomacy tuning

A smaller maintenance update, mostly bug fixes and quality-of-life changes from community reports.

A few things worth calling out:

  • Crashes: fixes for startup, late-game enemy ship turns, closing the Ship Designer, and turn rollover/autosave around the shipyard.
  • Ship hulls: mass capacity is up on every hull size. The practical win is that the AI stops building bombers with no weapons on them, so its fleets are actually armed.
  • Pollution: Industrial Center and synthetic harvester pollution now scale flat instead of as a multiplier, so high-level worlds no longer spiral into runaway pollution.
  • Diplomacy: ceasefire credit exchange and penalties are higher, so those deals matter more in negotiations.
  • Other: mining starbase fix near contested resources, debug console hotkeys that no longer overlap the base game, map generation rebalance, and new localization for the context windows and Adaptive AI settings.

DISCUSSION How does the map layout of Gal Civ 4 play out when compared to previous titles?

So, a little bit of background on me as a player if I could waste your time for a little while: I love GalCiv2 and Stardock, my first 4x was GalCiv2, it was the first game I bought over the internet, back when they had Impulse, before they sold it to Gamestop or whatever it was, before I even had a Steam game I had Twilight of the Arnor, it was the 1st game I began playing early in the morning and then suddenly I realized the sun was coming down, I still get chills at the Dark Avatar intro video: "the only force powerful enough to stand up to the Drengin Empire is... the Drengin Empire, only through victory can the galaxy be saved from extermination, so it can be enslaved, as is proper".

So I hope you understand how sad it was for me when I bounced hard from 3, I dont even know what it was, I think the pacing was weird? or something I cant even point to a single reason, it just never clicked for me, and Stellaris came out around the same time which at the time felt like a more complex GalCiv anyways, so I sunk my time there and didnt catch up to the final state of the game.

Fast forward I saw the announcement of 4, "Great!" I thought another chance for Stardock to refine the formula... until I saw the map... I just... I hate that type of map design, I know its a weird thing to complain about, but I just dont like the idea of the galaxy being a bunch of small islands, its not the first this happened to me I also bounced hard from Civ6 map design, it feels like Im making an Eucomenopolis instead of growing a civilization.

Weird thinking, I know, but I wanted to vent, and the TL;DR is: what do you think about the way GalCiv4 plays when compared to its predecessors?, do you think the map design is a good feature or does it "gamify" the matches, also incidentally, what do you think about the state of GalCiv3 now that development is over? money is tight these days so should I give 3 another spin while 4 finishes growing its legs?

GalCiv 3 Issue with custom tech tree

Custom civilizations do not have the tech needed for the hypergates even with the retribution DLC.

Wondering if anyone has a fix or workaround.

Alien GPT problems

For the last few days when I try to generate a new civilization I get nothing. I get no description or any generated portraits. Has anyone else had these issues?

r/GalCiv Jun 08 '26

I've just won a game as my human civilization... althought this description at the end doesn't really describe what happened. It was more of "I made an alliajce with one civ that was willing to do so and wiped out everyone else"

But I can easily say that this game has been won by one type of ship: fighters. I think they are the best class. Thry are cheap, can be produced from early game, can be used in swarms and their Evasion bonus gives them better chance at survival than their low HP would otherwise suggest.

Cruisers became nearly useless once enemy started using Nanite Repair Cloud.

DEV JOURNAL Galactic Civilizations IV - Dev Journal #119: Spring Status Report

Thumbnail store.steampowered.com
21 Upvotes

It has been a busy Spring.

The Galactic Civilizations community has posted vast amounts of suggestions, requests and just generally amazing feedback. There really should be a study on why 4X game communities are just, well, they really are just the best.

The new expansion, Federations & Empires is pretty closely tied with version 4.0. That’s because version 4 supports the new government system and the base government, Colonial Charter, comes with the game. This will be good news to players of the base game, but creates a wrinkle for us in that we can’t release the expansion pack until version 4 is done.

Does anyone have the mod files for Future Worlds v0.65 for GC2.

The links on the old modding forums are dead.
