shocked that people hate s2e9 Second Sight
i sincerely can't believe it's one of the lowest rated episodes. i thought it was incredible. sisko is such a great character and i thought the central allegory was very well done

S3E19 Through the looking glass. Sisko and Dax
So, in a recent rewatch it occurs to me that this episode is problematic with relation to the Sisko/Dax relationship. In the mirror U Sisko has sex with mirror Dax. This is played as he has to in order to maintain his cover in the mirror U. But when he returns to the prime U Sisko still has this knowledge and any and all emotional baggage that may come along. So, he got to “reluctantly” have sex with his subordinate, long-time friend/mentor with zero consequences. To my knowledge this is never divulged to Dax in any later episodes. It just goes unaddressed. Crazy.

Question about Deep Space Nine Season 1 EP 6
I'm rewatching the show. In the first episode, Odo doesn't know where he came from or what his species is, and he thinks the wormhole will provide those answers.
In episode 6, they find a Jem'Hadar infant. When it leaves the infirmary and attacks people on the station, Dax already knows it is a Jem'Hadar, and Odo knows about the Founders.
I don't understand this part of the story, because up to that point, there had been no contact between the Federation and the Dominion.
And episode 5, "Captive Pursuit. The crew of the statio say that the species featured in the episode represents the first contact with an intelligent race from the Gamma Quadrant
Did I accidentally miss a detail in the story?

Custom Lego USS Defiant
Tough. Little. Ship.
"Officially, it's classified as an escort vessel. Unofficially, the Defiant's a warship. Nothing more, nothing less; to put it simply, it's overgunned and overpowered for a ship its size."
I’d wanted to build a larger USS Defiant from Star Trek for years, but I made myself one rule: I wasn’t going to do it at this scale unless I thought I could make something better than the versions already out there. That meant getting far beyond "close enough."
The Defiant is a nightmare of shallow curves, small shifts in angle, stepped armour and sections that only line up when everything is placed exactly where it should be. Move one connection by half a plate, change one wedge by a few degrees, and the whole silhouette starts to fall apart, as does structural integrity. A lot of this model had to be calculated before it could be built. Angles, offsets and attachment points were worked out so that the outer hull could follow the original schematics while still connecting to a strong internal frame.
It took repeated rebuilding to make those separate structures lock together strongly while still following the original schematics as closely as possible. The result is a model that captures not only the Defiant’s overall silhouette, but the smaller changes in curve, slope and armour profile that are so often simplified, or ignored entirely.
That same attention extends across the entire build. I’ve included every visible design, engineering and armament feature I could feasibly represent, along with the Chaffee shuttle inside the hangar and the detachable forward warhead. Note: There is no lighting included in these instructions.
Features:
- Detachable forward warhead, allowing you to recreate one of the Defiant’s most extreme last-resort weapons.
- Opening shuttlebay with the Chaffee, housed inside the underside of the ship and removable for separate display.
- Character Studdies Defiant crew, featuring Benjamin Sisko, Jadzia Dax, Worf, Kira Nerys, Miles O’Brien and Nog on their own display stand (or crewed inside the bridge)
- Rotatable display stand, so the Defiant can be preparing for warp, banking into combat or diving towards its next target.
- Reinforced internal structure, with the nacelles and angled upper hull built as separate assemblies and attached to the main body using precisely calculated connection points for both strength and accuracy.
- Highly accurate hull shaping, capturing the Defiant’s curves, armour profiles, recessed sections and subtle changes in angle as closely as possible at this scale.
Beyond that, I’ve worked hard to include every recognisable design, engineering and armament feature of the Defiant that could be represented at this scale:
- Four forward pulse-phaser cannons
- Quantum torpedo launcher
- Forward and aft torpedo launchers
- Main navigational deflector
- Ablative hull armour, with the distinctive layered plating carried across the upper and lower surfaces
- Integrated warp nacelles
- Bussard collectors
- Plasma transfer conduits
- Port and starboard impulse engines
- Plasma exhaust vents
- Upper sensor pallet
- Main bridge
- Bridge sensors
- Resupply connectors
- Forward targetting sensors
- Aft sensor arrays
- Transporter emittor pads
- Fore and aft RCS thrusters
- Escape-pod hatches
- Shield grid emitters
- Defensive shield grid emitters
- Tractor-beam emitter
- Navigation lights
- Deuterium loading ports
- Nacelle intercoolers
- Opening shuttlebay with the Chaffee shuttle
- Detachable forward warhead
- Warhead/hull interconnect
This reimagined model measures approximately:
38cm (l) x 30cm (w) x 6cm (h) off stand
37cm (l) x 30cm (w) x 21cm (h) on stand

STLV 2026: Boldly Going Where I’ve Never Gone Before… Sober
I also posted this in r/startrek but since DS9 is my favorite I wanted to post here too.
This year will be my first time at the Star Trek Convention in Vegas, and I’m realizing it’s a bit of a milestone.
Day One of the convention also marks 4 months sober. Somehow, I have never set foot in the state of Nevada sober. Not once. Which means I’ll also be experiencing Las Vegas for the first time with a clear head instead of attempting to outdrink a city that was specifically designed to win.
I’m going solo because none of my friends could make it, so my plan is to meet people there. More specifically, I’d love to connect with other sober Trekkies.
Is anyone else attending who’s in recovery? Ideally someone with a solid program, because mine occasionally has the structural integrity of a Pakled spaceship. 😅
The Rio contains enough opportunities to derail me without me ever needing to step outside, so having some sober people to grab coffee, wander the convention, or just check in with would make a huge difference.
My goal is to leave Vegas with photos, autographs, and exactly zero Romulan Ales.
Live long and prosper. 🖖🏽

Kyle Mackenzie Sullivan on The Fourth Death of Star Trek and the DS9 model
The end of the blog suggests the combination of DS9 and YouTube as the neo-DS9 model:
So, if I were to combine these lessons into a strategy for what comes after the Kurtzman era, it would be this. Creatively, Deep Space Nine offers perhaps the strongest template. Long-form serialized storytelling is well suited to the streaming era, and DS9 demonstrated decades ago how to combine that structure with the qualities that made Star Trek distinctive: thoughtful worldbuilding, institutional politics, moral inquiry, and an ever-deepening shared universe. Rather than reinventing Star Trek’s identity for each new production, the franchise could continue expanding that universe while allowing new characters and stories to emerge within it.
As for distribution, the syndication model of the 1990s is gone. But the principle behind it remains remarkably relevant. Star Trek has historically grown when it has been placed in front of as many potential viewers as possible, not when it has been used to persuade audiences to adopt a particular platform. The equivalent of syndication in the streaming era may therefore be broad, non-exclusive distribution rather than strict platform exclusivity. Whether through licensing, ad-supported streaming services, free streaming platforms, or partnerships with larger distributors, the goal should be the same: maximize exposure first and monetize that audience second. Star Trek has always been strongest as a franchise that people discover rather than one they must seek out. YouTube, now the world’s largest streaming platform by viewing time, illustrates the opportunity. A limited or simultaneous release across platforms like YouTube, FAST services, and other streaming partners could function much like syndication once did: not replacing Paramount’s own platform, but dramatically widening the franchise’s reach.

Who is your favorite couple/duo?
Who is your favorite pairing? I am finishing up the show for the first time and you can't beat the Dax/Sisko dynamic for me because of how personalit was and the depth of mutual knowledge they had. I also loved Weyoun and Dukat as frienemies and their salty back and forth.

What if Kurn was a recurring character on DS9? How would he fit in on the station and into the plot of the show?
So I have seen a few posts and comments saying that it was a waste that Kurn didn't become a recurring character on the show. Thing is I don't see how he could fit in on the station and into the plot of the show? Except, for one plot where Michael Eddington recruits him into the Maquis.
Any thoughts?

So, if the Founders ever had to deal with Cyclospora do you think they would have gained a new appreciation for solids?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars running on Windows 11
I have had my original copy of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars sitting on a shelf for more than twenty years. It was one of my favorite Star Trek games, but I had not played it since the Windows 98 era because it had become such a mess to run on modern systems.
Today I got it working properly on Windows 11. I have confirmed:
all intro videos play
the main menu works
mouse input works
audio works
ships, space, textures, and effects render correctly
Federation missions 1 and 2 work
Dominion mission 1 works
the game runs in a 1280×960 4:3 environment
the desktop resolution restores correctly after exit
I released the early alpha modernizer here:
https://github.com/AsusFarstrider/dominion-wars-modern
The installer uses the owner’s original North American retail CD, reconstructs the game installation, guides the user through applying the official 1.04 patch, installs the compatibility layer, creates a launcher, and supports repair and removal.
It does not include:
game files
the official patch
a modified game executable
a no-CD patch or DRM bypass
You need legitimate original media.
I also want to be transparent about how this was made: I built it with extensive help from AI. AI was used to handled a huge amount of the technical work such as reconstructing the broken installer process, analyzing the crash dump, tracing the failed Direct3D texture creation, locating and studying the old compatibility-wrapper source, and identifying the root cause.
The core problem turned out to be a broken non-power-of-two texture path in the game. On modern hardware, Dominion Wars sees capabilities it was not designed to handle, generates invalid texture dimensions, and crashes. The new compatibility profile forces it back onto the working texture path.
This is still an early alpha and has only been validated on a very limited setup. I would especially appreciate testing from people with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel graphics, Windows 10, different Windows 11 builds, and other monitor configurations.
After twenty years, I finally got to play Dominion Wars again. It really is a great game.
