i’m going to look at a 2001 cherokee tomorrow. i think its the police package, has the spotlight, vinyl floors, and no trim on the doors. is there anything i need to look out for? i know to check the bottom because especially here in MN they rust out bad. but is there anything else significant to look for, or any common problems that will end up with me putting more money into than its worth? its got pretty low miles, 135k, so i’m hoping its in good shape. it looks like it in the listing, but pictures always make cars look better than they are.

Looking for advice on shock height. I have an adjustable short arm sitting at 4.5 front and 5 inch rear on shackle relocaters. 31 inch tires going to 32 once these are smoked. 4.10 gears, daily driver status. Do Inget the 3-4.5" length or the 5-6" lift set?

I grew up going to off road races here in AZ back in the late 90s-early 2000s with my old man.
After my folks went through a nasty divorce that had me unable to see my pops for almost 2 years.
The first day the restraining order dropped, he scooped me up in a 1991 XJ that was red.
He's had a ton over the years, probably close to 15 or so.
Yesterday, he went with me to buy my first at 33 years old.
It's not his, but it's mine.
The owner cared for this thing here in Southwest since 91 sold it to the guy I got it from yesterday 6 years ago.
Entire cooling system has been done. AC blows Cold, new linkage, new gas tank, new fuel pump, 4" lift on brand new 33s and not a spot of rust and only 180k on it.

I paid 4500 for it and would've paid more if I could've, solely to feel that feeling I had last night driving 90minutes after getting it with my old man. I feel like a kid again, and I'm so stoked.

Saw it in the streets today

2 inch add a leafs, new leaf pack and shackles in the rear done. New wheels and tires. Still gotta add the 2 inch pucks up front. Huge PIA. All 4 leaf spring bolts broke. Lots of welding, cutting and swearing finally got it done.

I am telling you the drains were clean, the tracks were dry, the seal was siliconed but the XJ still had water pouring into it with the power sunroof. Literally the biggest mystery of mankind. 20 years later no idea how it leaked.

One day the jeep was so filled up with water i just drilled a hole and it poured out. It's on it's last legs rotting but i will never buy a car with a sunroof again.

Have seen airjeep.com and some other sites only with years ‘88 and up listed. These are the only parts i’ve seen since owning it without the year ‘87 included. I’m assuming they would work with ‘87 being renix. Does anyone know if this is not the case? Better bet to get custom line cut and crimped? Getting conflicted answers when searching online. I’ve got an OEM compressor that has been converted.

I have a quick question . Before replacing these sensors I heard I’m supposed to disconnect the battery . Can someone please let me know the steps needed to ensure I reset the battery to reprogram for the new sensors. Basically how to do it and when ( either before or after the new sensors are in?) anything helps, thanks !

Just repaired my ignition switch and fixed the issue there, but after putting everything back on, the left blinker works perfectly, but the right blinker has a fast clicking sound with no arrow on the dash, rear right blinker blinks very fast and the front right does nothing.

Did I short something out? I forgot to unplug the battery before, ugh.

So I am trying to find a dryer and condenser for my ac, the vin doesn’t have an ac meaning that when the jeep arrived in Greece the dealer installed it, I can’t find a dryer and condenser no mater what I do no or equivalent is available (the best I managed to find is 2 months waiting time) for a parts guy in the other side of Greece, anyone knows where, what fits for mine and what I could use to maybe even upgrade it?

I recently finished installing a remanufactured 4.0 engine into my 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ (AW4 automatic). The engine runs and starts, but we are having an electrical/gauge cluster communication issue.

The issue started after installing an upgraded gauge cluster from a higher-trim Jeep. On the first startup with the new cluster, everything worked normally for a couple minutes. Then several gauges suddenly stopped working:

Tachometer/RPM gauge stopped working
Speedometer stopped working
Oil pressure gauge appears not to be working
Temperature gauge is not working
Some other cluster functions still work

After this happened, the cluster displayed a “NO BUS” message.

A scan tool sometimes communicates with the Jeep, but communication seems intermittent. When it does communicate, it shows P1698 — No CCD/J1850 message from TCM (Transmission Control Module).

The transmission itself was recently serviced:

AW4 pan was dropped
Filter replaced
Pan cleaned and reinstalled
Refilled with ATF+4
No transmission flush was performed

The Jeep runs and drives, but the missing gauges and communication issue remain.

Things already checked:

Tried swapping back to the original gauge cluster — issue remained
Checked cluster connectors visually
Scanner can sometimes connect to PCM
Transmission fluid service did not change the problem

The problem seems like a CCD bus / communication / wiring issue rather than a transmission mechanical issue. Looking for advice on where to start diagnosing:

CCD bus wiring
PCM/TCM communication
Grounds
Cluster wiring/connectors
Possible harness damage from the engine swap

Any suggestions on common failure points on a 1999 XJ would be appreciated.

New here, so hello! Picked up a 2000 XJ recently. Been working on it a bit for a couple weeks.

I noticed today, that the lower portion of the passenger front door hits the fender when opening it. I loosened the upper bolts in the engine bay, and removed the two on the pinch welds under the door.

The inner bolt in the door jam didn’t seem like it allowed any forward or backward adjustments, so I didn’t bother loosening it too much. After this, I tried pretty hard to get the bottom of the fender to move forward and it just won’t budge. The door itself is flush on every other body line and there’s no sagging.

I’m new to adjustments on these, so any help is appreciated.
