Current drive is a 2017 Subaru liberty premium model. I love it, no finance on it. But we have a 14 month old and planning a second. Need something bigger and a bit higher so I'm not bending over as much to fight her into and out of the carseat.

Priorities is obviously safety features, and fuel economy. No space for home charger due to layout of our property with neighbours, so not looking at EV or hybrid models.

My partner wants to look at a Haval Jolion. We would sell our liberty and get financing on the gap.

Has anyone had one as a daily driver for the family? Any thoughts or things we should think about before committing to a Haval?

currently in nsw you can get $100 off your registration fee between 1st September 2026 to 31st August 2027. my car’s rego expires on 31st August 2026, so one day before this discount. does anyone know if i’ll be eligible for this discount if i let my rego lapse and then renew it on the 1st? is there extra fees for not renewing my rego by a day?

i also have a secondary question about rego and insurance. i am currently on my P2 license, i will be eligible for my full license in March 2027, but i am 25. as stated, my rego expires on 31/08. if i renew it for a year, which includes getting the green slip (ctp) that will be valid until 2027, but my “risk” as a driver will decrease in March, so would i be eligible for a refund? i am looking at quotes (for my current driver status), and my ctp will cost ~$680 for 12 months, ~$350 for 6. if i get 6 months rego, that will only cover me to February, one month away from getting my fulls. but if i get 12 months, can i ask for a deduction to be made for the other 5 months on my ctp when i am a non provisional driver?

i am also currently insured comprehensively, with that policy ending on the same date as my rego, i am looking at dropping to TPPD. and same question, if i purchase this for a year, can i ask for a refund of my premium when i am on my fulls?

please advise on how i best approach this, financially speaking. i want to spend as little as possible and get the best deal lol.

Recently bought a Honda Civic EK hatch and noticed a few spots that I'm unsure about. I've attached some photos.
I can see a couple of paint chips on the rear wheel arch and what looks like a small amount of surface rust around the door jamb seam.

One thing I'm particularly unsure about is the area near the top of the hatch opening/trunk jamb (in the second and third photos). It has a brownish line on both sides of the car, so I'm wondering if that's actually rust or if it's just seam sealer, factory adhesive, or something that's meant to look like that.

Does that area look normal for an EK, or is it the start of rust?

Also, based on these photos:
-Would you consider this just minor surface rust?

-Is it something that should be repaired sooner rather than later?

-Roughly what would a professional repair cost if its required?

I'm in the market for a family SUV and would really appreciate some advice from people with ownership experience.

We've recently downsized to one car, so it needs to do everything—daily school drop-offs, commuting, weekend trips, airport runs and the occasional road trip.

A bit of background:

Family of 3 (one child).

We usually travel with four large suitcases (my wife is anti minimalist) plus carry-on luggage, so boot space is important.

We've recently immigrated to Australia on a 4-year visa and plan to apply for permanent residency, so I'll likely keep the car for several years. Resale value is still something I consider though.

Previous vehicle

I previously owned a GWM Haval H6 in South Africa and, overall, it suited our needs very well.

The downsides were:

It developed a battery drain issue that Haval South Africa could never resolve.

It depreciated around 30% over four years (excluding taxes and registration).

Fuel economy wasn't great:

Around 11.5 -12 L/100 km in city driving.

Around 6.5–7 L/100 km with the A/C on open road.

My search criteria

• Budget: A$30,000–35,000

- Model year: 2025 or newer

• Maximum 20,000 km

• Located in Victoria

My shortlist

1. Mazda CX-5 G25 Touring

There are only a couple available in Victoria within my budget. Everyone I know who owns one loves it, and they seem to have an excellent reputation for reliability and resale. The cheapest I've found is around A$36k.

1. Honda CR-V

Very similar story to the Mazda. Excellent reputation, but prices seem to start around A$35k.

1. GWM Haval H6 HEV

This is currently one of my favourites. Since I'll probably be renting for a while, I'm leaning towards a conventional hybrid rather than a plug-in hybrid. The improved fuel economy addresses my biggest complaint with my previous H6, and they seem to start from around A$32k.

1. BYD Sealion 5

Essential I really like this option. My only hesitation is that, as a renter, I don't know whether I'll always have access to charging, which makes me wonder if I'd be getting the full benefit of a plug-in hybrid.

1. Chery Tiggo 7 Pro

This is around A$8k cheaper than the Mazda, Honda and BYD, which makes it tempting. However, my experience with Chery hasn't been great. My wife had a Tiggo 4 Pro that felt underpowered, my cousin had a gearbox failure, and my sister hasn't been particularly happy with her Tiggo 8 Pro. On the other hand, if it depreciates by A$6k over four years, it's still potentially good value.

1. GWM Haval Jolion HEV

Typically A$5–8k cheaper than the H6 HEV. It would make a good daily driver and should be cheaper to run, but I'm wondering whether I'd regret not buying the larger H6 given it seems to do everything better apart from fuel consumption.

My priorities (in order)

1. Reliability
2. Safety
3. Running costs
4. Resale value
5. Comfort for road trips
6. Technology and features

For those who have owned or driven any of these, which would you choose and why? Are there any models I've overlooked in the A$30–35k range that I should seriously consider?

I love the design of the Supercars control wheel - it looks great. I'm wondering if anyone has ideas of a suitable aftermarket wheel that is almost identical in design, but would fit a road-going current-gen Mustang?

The closest I can find style-wise is BBS's CH-R (second photo), but I don't think the stud pattern is right for the Mustang, nor the offset sufficient to clear the factory Brembos.

Hey there guys I’ve been in love with what I’m seeing in the Toyota crown recently especially with the gws204. I’ve also been really wanting a coupe with good handling due to the sporty look. What would be a better pick with a roughly 25k budget, a 2014 base 86/ brz or a 2012 gws204. Keep in mind I’m only 21 and want to consider insurance costs, servicing costs and reliability of each.

I have been doing some research on the yd25 engine and i know some defects and what to look for in that sense. I am wondering if i should get someone to come and look at the truck. I am only really going for this truck because of the modifications, it's not too old, not too new and it's km's aren't too high in my opinion. Should i get something to read the car computer for errors ect the obd2 scanner.

I was talking with a mechanic and he swears by Japanese cars. He was like don't buy an older used European car, they are all money pits, the people who drive them abuse the car, they aren't that reliable, parts are expensive, they break more often etc. Bro kept going for like an hour.

He said if you're dropping $60k on a used M3, prepare to spend $5k a year average, could be EASILY more than that if something breaks which is likely. He said he used to own a few European sports cars but ended up selling it because it was just costing him too much and that was him doing all the labour, just paying for parts. Since he switched to Japanese, his cost has been a fraction of what it used to be.

Is this accurate? I was excited as hell to buy a 05 M3 E46 for instance or an 14 C63 AMG or something but now I'm terrified to get a European car without warranty. I wasn't planning on spending that much possibly every year on maintenance/repairs.
