I collect American and Canadian coins but the Voyageur dollar is my outright favorite since i was a child.
The scene on the reverse: the weathered and weary voyageurs, the snowy Canadian forest under the cast of the northern lights is so evocative and romantic for me. It makes me nostalgic and yearn for a time that I was never in. It even has a HB for hudson bay company if you look close.
I have an entire NGC slab box of these things. Nobody wants them in american coin shops. I hate how they shrunk it down into a smaller nickel coin in 1968. If you look at the NGC or PCGS census, it is surprisingly hard to find the silver ones in grades above 65, even though it's not a terribly old coin nor did it ever circulate well.

Popped the till open at work this morning and found some new additions to the collection! I always bring a little cash to exchange at face for cool coins. I haven’t seen any Aurora Toonie’s in the wild for some time now so it was neat to find even tho the condition isn’t top notch. The 66 was the star of the show though :) Cheers!

I am not Canadian & it's been a while since I've seen one of these. Heard 1996 is a fairly common year for fakes.
So far as I can tell, I don't see any signs it's not real, but I wanted to run it past actual Canadian numismatists real quick.

Something different for this subreddit. Didn't know there were so many interesting events surrounding the toonie.

A friend got this toonie and thought it seemed off. The edges say “Canada 2 Dollars”, and it feels lighter than an average toonie.
