knickerbocker / grattan business always blocking bike lane :(

Post image
29 Upvotes

i am sorry to be an annoying/complaining biker, but i have been biking up knickerbocker for work for ~5-6 years, and i am just struck how this business always has trucks or machines parked in the bike line, PLUS cars/trucks parked in parking line. so, bikers are forced onto knickerbocker which is often a busy car throughway, especially during rush hour. i genuinely feel shock/relief when i come up to this corner and am able to pass through on the bike lane.

i understand that cars and trucks and businesses need to use the bike lane sometimes, morgan just beyond here is also a madhouse a lot of the time, but what can you do with those huge businesses lining the street. this one business just really bothers me!!!

does anyone know anything about this business? or can anyone commiserate?

Hi! I know there is a wild flock of monk parrots in the city but saw this little budgie hanging out in front of the dentist on Irving and Himrod, and figured it was worth a post in case he belongs to anyone! She was very friendly and seemed really comfortable with humans, i was not able to get her indoors as she flew out of reach.

Queer women who love literary classics

Upvotes

I always wanted to join a sapphic book club, but all those I came across are focused on contemporary books, or queer only themes.

I am still digging through classics, especially russian and ancient greek literature at the moment. Would love other likeminded queer women including transgender and non binary folks to form a little literary salon with me. Bushwick preferred for in person meet up discussions at some local coffee shops or quiet bars.

If someone could give me a related discord so I could post there as well, would really appreciate.

It works great just needs cosmetic covers-- amazon sells (cheap!) adhesive pleather sheets and rolls for this exact kind of problem

+STORAGE +3 angle settings for back +can become a bed +2 separate pieces, chaise and love seat, that can attach to either side for 2 configurations

It's one of the coolest couches I've had - when you adjust it it sounds like you're working a steampunk ship sail- VERY satisfying heavy metal sensory happy clinks and clicks.

Explanation of cosmetic wear: a cat for the scratches + when i put a blanket on top to stop the scratches it rubbed off the pleather layer. -only a few real gashes on top border but would be easily covered by a full large adhesive sheet

AVAILABLE FOR PICK-UP ONLY TODAY AND TOMORROW/THURS

DM and i can send vids of the full function of both pieces- it wouldn't let me on this post thx

I want to keep it but too many memories of ex.

Flooding question, Stockholm Street

Hi,

I'm looking to rent a basement apartment that is on Stockholm between Irving and Wyckoff. I'm aware that knickerbocker can badly flood especially during flash flood type weather.

Was curious does anyone live on the block? How has it been for you with flooding. Have you delt with it at all? If so how often ?

Are there other things I should be concerned about (sewers backing up?)

Thanks!

Seeking artists & performers for Cheese Party

We are throwing a cheese party in Bushwick/Ridgewood on August 15th at a large artist studio with a backyard

We will have hundreds of pounds of all-you-can-eat cheese, there will be live music and stand up comedy

We are looking for more performers and artists..

Do you do live characature drawing?

Do you do flash tattoos at events?

Do you do stand up or improv or interpretive dancing?

Do you have a special talent you want on display?

Do you have a bit you want to integrate into the cheese party?

Are you a baker and want to bake a cake that looks like cheese but is not?

Do you want to lead an activity as if it’s summer camp?

Do you want to live build a cornucopia of seasonal fruit?

All while stuffing your face with CHEESE?! Surrounded by hundreds of cheese lovers?!

DM me here or on IG to discuss

Hello! 👋
I’m a dental hygiene student in NYC currently looking for patients interested in a low-cost, comprehensive dental cleaning.

All appointments take place at a dental school clinic and are carefully supervised by licensed dentists and hygienists, ensuring your care is safe, thorough, and professionally guided every step of the way.

🦷 Cost & details:
• Cleaning: $20
• X-rays only if needed
• Appointments are longer than a typical dental visit (around 3 hours) since we complete a full oral health assessment before treatment

What’s included:
• Oral cancer screening and head/neck exam
• Gum measurements and periodontal evaluation
• Personalized treatment plan
• Continuous dentist supervision and approval

This may be a great fit if you:
• Don’t have dental insurance
• Haven’t had a cleaning in a while
• Are looking for affordable, high-quality care
• Are okay with a longer visit for more detailed treatment

📍 Location: Downtown Brooklyn at NYC College of Technology (City Tech)

I live in Bushwick, Marco does not. On saturday during the storm my porter had to leave work urgently because his pregnant wife and son were at home while their basement apartment flooded. I’m still paying him despite missing shifts, and I’ve already sent him some money myself, just trying to see if there’s anyone out there beyond my normal IG circles that’s able to donate - every bit helps.

Thanks yall 🙏

Volunteering in bushwick (or around)?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to get involved in my community and start volunteering. I’d love to help people experiencing homelessness, families in need, or any local organizations making a positive impact.
Does anyone know of any volunteer groups or nonprofits around Bushwick (or nearby) that are looking for volunteers?

Thanks so much! 😊

More flooding anticipated today…..

Looks like we’re in for another round of hard rain 😩

I’m begging everyone: please take two minutes to check the storm drain nearest you and clear away any trash blocking it.

Yes, our infrastructure is failing us, and yes, our elected officials need to do better. But clogged storm drains make flooding so much worse, and this is something quick and easy that makes a huge difference.

Worst case, you picked up some trash. Best case, you helped keep your block from flooding.

Agression on Central & Stanhope

Some dude dressed all in black, with big piercings and what looked like a mini black golf bag slung over his shoulder, charged at me while I was walking and tried to grab things out of my hand, saying, "Gimme that. What is that? Give it to me."

I told him, "No."

He said "Why not?"

I say "Cause you're all up in my shit."

He then got aggressive with a woman who was throwing away her compost and smacked her phone out of her hand. She grabbed it and got away.

I stuck around to make sure things didn't escalate. Before leaving, he pointed at both of us and said, "Keep walking!"

Just a heads-up to be careful if you see this guy. He seemed like he was having some kind of episode, but he was also aggressive and physically confrontational.

Rinse, Wash, Flood the Basement, Repeat - Tuesday & Wednesday to bring more chances for flash flooding and severe thunderstorms with all hazards.

Get your ponchos, umbrellas and galoshes out again; ANOTHER FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT! While no two events are the same, the set up tomorrow is similar to what we saw last Saturday. It's almost as if our weather is being scripted by AI (/s).

Latest Briefing and Key Messages from our local NWS Forecast Office (OKX on Long Island).

Rainfall totals are expected to be between 1-2 inches, but up 3-4 inches could be possible. Peak rainfall rates in the strongest storms could be near 2.5 inches per hour, which could result in flash flooding. Your plants are probably gonna love it! Your neighbor in the basement apartment? Not so much.

NWS (OKX) Official Forecast Rainfall totals (updated Monday 3pm)

Severe thunderstorms will also be possible both Tuesday and Wednesday, but most likely on Tuesday evening. All hazards are on the table, but straight-line damaging wind gusts will be the primary threat in addition to urban flooding.

NWS (SPC) Day 2 Convective Outlook: Tuesday's Likelihood of Severe Weather Hazards.

I said "Heyyyyyy what's going on"

And I said:shout out to Linda Perry, who wrote that song and so many other hits.

What's going on is that the El Niño pattern is now firmly entrenched. To make a very long and complex story much shorter and overly simplistic, this leads to a long-term weather pattern featuring "troughing" or low pressure over eastern Canada. That "long wave trough" trough goes through periods when it amplifies and periods when it weakens.

European Model Ensemble (EPS 12z July 20) showing a theoretical example of what the 500 mb weather pattern will look like over the next 72 hours. The deepening blue shades over the Great Lakes indicate an amplifying trough.

This weather pattern leads to mostly northwest flow, with shortwaves passing over the Great Lake before descending through upstate New York, across the Finger Lakes, Poconos and Catskills, and into the tri-state region. When that longwave trough amplifies, this intensifies the upper-level jet with increased divergence and diffluence ahead of the trough. In turn, any shortwave passing through an amplifying trough will also tend to intensify as the jet streak helps generate increased mid-level lift.

NAM 12km model (00z July 21) precipitable water anomalies and low-level winds.

This is one of those weeks, where the longwave trough is amplifying at the exact time a shortwave will be descending through New York. AND at the same time that a weak broad tropical system is meandering along the Gulf Coast of Florida. These forces are combining to result in significant warm and moist air advection across the eastern United States, and all that moisture will be feeding into the frontal system that will be making its way through.

NWS (WPC) Official Forecast Surface Analysis showing approximate timing of frontal passages.

The greatest severe threat will arrive Tuesday evening with warm front. But tropical moisture will "overrun" the warm front leading to an initial wave of showers via isentropic lift. The cold front will then arrive Wednesday evening, leaving us in the "warm sector" for most of Wednesday.

What Weather Can I Expect and When?

The official forecast calls for an initial round of rain - maybe some run-of-the-mill thunderstorms - either late Tuesday morning or in the early afternoon hours (what some people might call mid-day), followed by a second round of thunderstorms Tuesday evening.

NWS (SPC) Day 2 Convective Outlook: Tuesday's Likelihood of Severe Weather Hazards.

While an isolated flash flood or severe thunderstorm can not be ruled out with the earlier round, the greater risk will be with any evening storms. Honestly, I'm not even sold that the "initial" round will be that impressive, and I think we have better odds of just a drizzle (or nothing at all) than experiencing any significant precipitation.

NAM 3km model (00z July 21) reflectivity showing what the radar might look like, 8am Tues - 8am Thu.

But that comes with a price because the likelihood of severe weather in the evening will largely depend significantly on the weather we experience during the early afternoon. If the day is mostly quiet, then the surface can heat up more to convective temperatures. On the other hand, if the afternoon is mostly cloudy and/or drizzly, that would produce a stable atmosphere that would "cap" rising air and suck the life out of any approaching storms.

With decreasing confidence in significant rain earlier in the day, there is growing confidence that evening storms will thus be stronger, as the atmosphere will be conditionally unstable. Models suggest 2000-3000 J/kg of MLCAPE, meaning there will be plenty of elevated instability for any sufficiently buoyant moisture. And there will be plenty of moisture - over two inches! Dry air aloft and DCAPE around 500-1000 J/kg could provide support for downburst wind gusts strong enough to trigger severe warnings. There is also a non-zero chance of a tornado and/or hail larger than one inch.

NAM 3km model (00z July 21) sounding/skew-T showing our atmosphere might look like at 7pm on Tuesday.

Regardless, expectations are for a deep moisture layer that will penetrate high up into the troposphere, resulting in thunderstorms and heavy rain. Even if thunderstorms don't reach severe limits, downpours could drop over 1" of rain in a short period, leading to urban flooding. In the event that training and back-building of storms result in heavy rain remaining over a hyperlocal region for an hour or longer, total rain totals could exceed 3-4 inches.

48-hr Hourly Forecast Plotter for Bushwick/Ridgewood, Tues-Wed (1.3")

Rain and thunderstorms are expected continue overnight, and could linger into Wednesday. Wednesday is forecast to be mostly dry, but we will be in the "warm sector" - the area behind the warm front and ahead of the cold front - which means it will be humid and unstable.

In fact, CAPE levels (e.g., thunderstorm juice) could be higher on Wednesday than on Tuesday. This will set up the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon and early evening as the cold front approaches and generates lift. The silver linings are that there will be less moisture to work with and that models are suggesting the greatest focus of lift will be to our north and south, potentially putting us in a zone of subsidence (i.e., sinking air, which is counterproductive to rising moisture).

NWS Official Total Rainfall Forecasts (1.5-1.7").

I would put it at 50-50 odds that we receive at least 1.5 inches of rain across both days. But please don't go placing bets on polymarket. NEVER gamble on the weather. That goes double for you people who think about driving across flooded streets.
