Question Has anyone experienced severe cognitive decline like this and made a successful comeback?

I’m 35 years old and I’m trying to figure out if anyone has experienced something similar and eventually recovered enough to return to a successful career.

I was able to build what I considered a successful professional career. I earned two graduate degrees, worked my way into a high-paying corporate roles, and functioned well for years. Looking back, I believe stimulant medication (Adderall) played a significant role in allowing me to overcome lifelong attention difficulties, but it is no longer effective.

Over the last couple of years, however, my cognitive functioning has deteriorated to the point where I can no longer work.

My biggest symptoms are:

* Extremely slow processing speed.
* Severe attention and concentration problems.
* Reading comprehension has become incredibly difficult. I often have to reread the same sentence multiple times and still struggle to understand it.
* Conversations are exhausting because I can’t organize my thoughts or find the right words quickly enough.
* My brain feels mentally exhausted almost all the time, even after simple tasks.
* I feel disconnected from other people because it’s so hard to participate in conversations.
* Interviews and complex work tasks have become nearly impossible.
* Even everyday activities require much more mental effort than they used to.

I completed a neuropsychological evaluation. My results showed significant attention deficits, while many other cognitive areas were relatively preserved. Anxiety and depression are also present, but I personally feel that my attention and processing problems are driving much of my emotional distress rather than the other way around.

I’ve been working with both a psychiatrist and a therapist. I’ve tried different medications, but I still haven’t found anything that restores my ability to function the way I once could.

At this point I’m unable to work and am considering applying for disability because my cognitive symptoms have become so disabling.

I’m wondering:

* Has anyone experienced something similar?
* Were you eventually given a diagnosis that explained it?
* Did any treatment significantly improve your attention, processing speed, or reading ability?
* Were you able to return to your previous career or build a new one?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who went from being highly functional in demanding careers to feeling like their brain simply stopped working the way it used to. Success stories would mean a lot right now.

Thank you for reading.

Personal Story Cannot read nor write anymore

Upvotes

I urgently need help. I am unable to read anymore. I was trying to read some political books such as "Socialism Utopian and Scientific", however I keep rereading sentences. I cannot comprehend anything that I read. It takes me a couple times to reread a sentence to finally understand what it is trying to tell me. I feel so anxious about my inability to read because I am starting school again in September, safe to say I am terrified. It is pretty embarrassing but I was a much better reader in middle school. I was known as the reader, and was able to read in any setting with loud background noise as well. I am scared that my brain is rotted beyond repair due to AI and short form content. How do i fix my brain? I feel like I am in a constant panic and get absolutely nothing done all day. I am not sure how people read, study and go to the gym all in one day while i struggle to even study. I should also mention that I have bipolar disorder which had a recent onset in the past year. Does anyone know what could be going on?

Personal Story My brain fog was actually my drinking the whole time

spent like two years convinced I had long covid or some mystery autoimmune thing. Saw three different doctors, got bloodwork done twice, tried elimination diets, bought expensive supplements. nothing helped. the fog just kept getting thicker

It wasn't until my sister sat me down and basically said "you know you drink every single night right" that I even considered it. and even then I got defensive. Because it's not like i was blacking out. just a few drinks to take the edge off. Every night. for years

Turns out your brain doesn't really care about the difference between "functional drinking" and "problem drinking" when it comes to cognitive function. Who knew lmao

Ended up taking some time away at discovery point retreat which is what finally cleared things up. not just the fog but all the anxiety underneath it that I was numbing in the first place. Six months later and I can actually read a book without re-reading the same paragraph 8 times

anyway not saying everyone's brain fog is alcohol related but if you're at the point where you're googling "brain fog mystery cause" and you also happen to drink regularly... maybe just take a 30 day break and see what happens. saved me thousands in supplements tbh

Need Some Advice/Support 7+ years of severe executive dysfunction, rumination, maladaptive daydreaming and brain fog. I'm losing my career. How do you manage the symtom?

I'm a 21-year-old web developer, and I honestly feel like I've lost the last 7+ years of my life.

My biggest problem isn't motivation. I desperately want to work, but when I sit at my laptop my brain just shuts down. Technically I don't have motivation just i made it habit and discipline.

My symptoms:

  • I sit for hours and get almost nothing done.
  • I have severe executive dysfunction and time blindness.
  • My processing speed feels extremely slow.
  • My working memory feels almost nonexistent. I read something and it doesn't seem to stick.
  • I constantly drift into rumination, self-analysis, or maladaptive daydreaming.
  • Since childhood I've had intrusive fearful thoughts, and my brain immediately starts analyzing them instead of letting them go.
  • Every self-help concept becomes an obsession. If I learn about mindfulness, I keep checking whether I'm present. If I learn about discipline, I keep checking whether I've lost self-control. My brain turns everything into another mental project.
  • I keep searching for the "exact root cause" instead of actually living my life.

I've had extensive blood work (thyroid, B12, vitamin D, iron, glucose, CBC, etc.) and everything was normal.

I've tried:

  • stopping music/daydreaming triggers
  • self-help
  • meditation
  • spirituality
  • productivity systems
  • therapy advice
  • psychiatrists

I'm currently 3+ weeks into Bupropion XL 150 mg + Clonidine (Arkamin) with essentially no noticeable improvement so far.

My clients keep waiting for work while I spend entire days trapped inside my own head. I genuinely feel like my brain can't process information or execute tasks anymore.

Please be honest, even if the answer isn't what I want to hear. I just want to know if someone with a similar story eventually got their life back.

Symptoms Help, Im Always Low Energy

15 year old male with years of unexplained fatigue, brain fog, and delayed puberty signs. Looking for possible causes or what should be investigated next.

Hi! I'm a 15 year old male from the Philippines. I've been experiencing persistent low energy and brain fog since around Grade 5, and it's still affecting me now in Grade 11. The symptoms are present almost every day and have significantly affected school, sports, and social life.

Main symptoms

\- Chronic fatigue / very low energy almost every day

\- Brain fog (slow thinking, poor concentration, reduced mental stamina, difficulty finding words)

\- Wake up tired even after 7.5–8 hours of good-quality sleep

\- Exercise intolerance (get tired much faster than friends)

\- Low physical strength

\- Social activities also drain my energy

\- Dark circles under my eyes that don't improve much even with enough sleep

\- Cold hands and feet sometimes

\- Occasional mild lightheadedness when standing (used to be much worse before)

Puberty concerns

\- 15 years old

\- No armpit hair yet

\- Very little body hair

\- Often mistaken for someone much younger than my age

\- Baby face / younger appearance compared to classmates

Things that DON'T seem to explain it

\- Food doesn't noticeably improve the fatigue.

\- Water doesn't noticeably improve it.

\- Coffee only helps a little, if at all.

\- Lying down or resting usually doesn't restore my energy.

\- Sleep is usually deep and uninterrupted.

Recent laboratory results

\- CBC: Normal (Hemoglobin 15.2 g/dL)

\- Iron studies: Normal

\- Ferritin: 648 (possibly elevated from previous iron supplementation and/or recent illness)

\- Vitamin B12: 738

\- TSH: 4.09 (upper end of normal/borderline high)

\- Free T4: Normal

Other information

\- Previously had low blood pressure.

\- I have POIS (Post-Orgasmic Illness Syndrome), but my baseline fatigue continues even after reducing ejaculation, so it doesn't seem to fully explain everything.

\- My pediatrician referred me to a hematologist, but I'm wondering if an endocrine problem should also be investigated.

My questions

  1. Based on this history, what conditions would be highest on your differential diagnosis?

  2. Would delayed puberty or hypogonadism be a reasonable possibility?

  3. Should I be evaluated by a pediatric endocrinologist?

  4. What additional blood tests or imaging would you recommend?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Need Some Advice/Support Brian fog and other issues since 2024

So it's hard to identify what is actually causing the Brian fog.

It all started in 2024 when I was just studying stressed out as I had my exams next month. I was just studying and a random complex thought appeared in my mind related to something why. It was a why thought and that's normal we all face it during our day to day lives however this time it wasn't going it was just stuck into my mind.and just soon after that I started facing these thoughts daily. Then I somehow gave my exams and got good grades however after sometime I started having forehead pressure too much that I started feeling disconnected from the environment then I don't remember properly that afterwards or soon after that I also faced brain fog .

Now I went to ent but that doesn't work out so i decided to do chatgpt and search thru reddit.

Now as I started searching through them I don't know my anxiety just got worse Whatever symptoms I used to see I start having those in myself and till now I was just convinced that something was off in me like I was having some serious issue instead of anxiety that's what I started thinking. Also, on reddit I started seeing people facing this issue for more than 5 years or 10 years so I just convinced myself that there is no solution to this issue. The problems I start facing were:

2025

Blurred/double vision

Forehead pressure (worse in public places)

Not able to think properly

No fun in any thing

Tingling sensations

Throbbing pain in legs

Burning sensations in stomach

Vibrating stomach

Gut issue

Not able to articulate sentences properly

Was hard to understand a simple sentence

Simple word used to be harder

I was running my brain on manual mode

These are the symptoms I remember there might be more

Now, during this period I have been to the doctor (physician) who prescribed me a test which I went for and found out that my vit d levels were low (deficit). And my vit B12 were in normal range but at the baseline . He only prescribed me a single test CBC.

So I started taking VIT d supplement each week one tablet and eventually my deficiency was covered and now things got better not completely but there was improvement but again they got worse and this whole thing ruined my studies and many aspects of life .

Before this I was a guy with good grades goo d thinking and ambitious my now it feels like I am useless and will be for rest of my life.

Symptoms I facing now or I am left with :

Brain fog ( that is fluctuating sometimes extreme sometimes too low )

Tight neck

Upset stomach

Vibrating tummy

Double vision and forehead pressure ( they both also vary sometimes too much sometimes mild )

So i just want to ask what can be the rela issue the reason I have written this much is to know what can be the actual issue I don't want to go to the doctors and coming back knowing nothing I really want to get better atleast 80%. 20m turning 21 next month facing these symptoms from the age 19

Thank you

Question How do you go about getting diagnosed?

I think ive been dealing with this for a while (ironic that i cant remember when it started). 23m and it might be a combination of things, mental illness, trauma, ongoing abuse, recently quit weed after smoking myself stupid, stress from life and work and who knows what else. I just wish to think, i wanna be smart again, witty, creative, driven, motivated, reliable, and chatty. I'm none of it of recent years. I want help but i dont even know where to start. I used to go to therapy and was medicated for depression/anxiety (sertratine 150mg) for years but stopped after they made me "feel better". I am obviously not doing great now.

Do i talk to a regular doctor about this, psychiatrist, or do i need any testing? What have yall done to go about getting a diagnosis or does it even go diagnosed at all?

Personal Story Any help 🙏

Hello guys, About 3 months ago, I had a panic attack after drink like a 3-4 coffee, and since then I've been dealing with brain fog I had some blood tests done and found out that my Vitamin D level was very low (15 ng/mL). I've been taking Vitamin D3 supplements for the past 3 months, and I would say my brain fog has improved by about 60%. I also had a neck X-ray, which showed a loss of the normal cervical curve (military neck/straight neck). My neck muscles have been very tight since the panic attack. Has anyone experienced something similar and recovered? Did the brain fog eventually go away? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. My symptoms -Brain fog -Dizziness

headache

Neck muscle problems (tight neck muscles)

Anxiety and stress

Discomfort when sleeping on my left side

I was also diagnosed with H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori) infection

Diarrhea

Excessive thirst / Drinking a lot of water

Frequent urination I feel extremely unwell, almost like I'm dying, whenever I drink coffee again, so I have stopped drinking it completely. But I'm feeling better now like 60% Could this be related to COVID-19 or high histamine?or something else? I don't remember having any significant illness except for two occasions when I felt extremely fatigued, like I had a cold, but without a runny nose. My whole body felt exhausted, and then I recovered completely. The last time this happened was about a month before my first panic attack. Any help and ... Thanks

Question I struggle to focus, forget words mid-sentence, and feel mentally “blocked” every day—has anyone figured out the root cause of chronic brain fog?

I have trouble focusing, forget words in the middle of sentences, and every day I feel like my mind is "blocked." I feel like my brain stops working. Conversations get stuck, and I feel like my brain stops working. Conversations get stuck, I lose my train of thought, and even simple tasks are a lot of work.

I can still do things, but my mind is never clear or sharp, and it's really tiring. Getting more sleep and eating better are two things I've tried, but they haven't really helped.

Has anyone else had this kind of brain fog for a long time and figured out what was causing it?

Ranting I think my brain is rotting

I feel like I'm getting dumber by the second. Like honestly before I was normal, you know? Especially in maths, was predicted to get up to a grade 7 out of 9 in maths. Then in year 11 I got moved to the top class and went from doing amazing to barely scraping a passing grade.

Since then it's like I can't think. I can't do basic math, started stuttering a lot and I'm now misspelling everything and having to double check words I could spell in a heartbeart years ago.

I also have a horrible memory. I can't even remember my classmates names, and I'm losing my ability to name all 1000 pokemon.

It really is that damn phone. There's ads everywhere, which really put me off from watching YT. Can't go out anywhere because I don't want to spend money, I have like no hobbies and my ancient PC can't handle basic modern games. There is basically nothing to do other than doomscroll, which is genuienly rotting my brain. I mean, I constantly daydream so maybe that also rotted me? Since it's like a consistant stream of dopamine and no need for critical thinking.

Oh but don't assume I'm completely hopeless. I would never use AI, and I have all my morals and empathy, plus I actually like who I am, I just feel so braindead most of the time, like I can't even think. I've had so many conversations in lesson where the convo went in one ear straight out the other without even processing what they said, and I feel horrible but it's not something I can explain easily yk?? Anyways if anyone feels the same about this feel free to share

Need Some Advice/Support Am I going to die early?

Ive been reading studies that show how excessive screen time can cause early onset dementia, I’m so worried that I’m going to die in my 20s/30s. I’ve always been afraid of dementia, now more than ever. I don’t feel like going on with my life knowing that I’ll just die a slow, painful death. I’ve had a phone ever since I was 5, I’m 17 now. i feel like even if I get rid of it I’ll just get dementia anyway and have to be put in a home by my parents. I’ll never get to accomplish anything I want to and I’ll have to see everyone grow older than me. What do I even do in this situation? My life is going to be meaningless.

Need Some Advice/Support 22M/Competitive exam Aspirant: Dealing with intense Brain Fog and Dizziness due to Cervical Posture issues. Need advice on recovery/desk setup.

Hey everyone..

I am a 22yo male currently preparing for the competitive exams. Lately, I have been dealing with a highly frustrating issue that completely halted my preparation, and I wanted to see if anyone else here has overcome this.

My Routine:

I usually study around 7-8 hours a day. My routine involves long 2.5-hour continuous blocks at the library for Maths concepts and GS theory, followed by heavy grammar, homework sheets, and practicing MCQs.

The Symptoms:

A few days ago, I started getting intense brain fog, constant light dizziness, body weakness, and my forehead felt physically warm. I initially thought it was a viral fever or a reaction to topical Minoxidil (which I've used for a year).

The Doctor's Diagnosis:

I visited a clinic. My temperature was normal (98.8°F), and the doctor explicitly told me that the "feverish feeling," dizziness, and brain fog are entirely due to excessive studying with poor posture leading to a cervical issue (Tech Neck/Cervical Spondylosis). Basically, hunching over my Maths and GS books for hours locked up my neck muscles and compressed the nerves/blood flow to my head.

Current Status:

The doctor gave me muscle relaxants/pain meds and told me to completely drop my pillow, sleep flat on my back, and strictly study with a straight spine.

I took a 2-day total break this weekend. On Day 1 of the medicine, 99% of my pain and fog vanished, but the moment it wore off, the stiffness and slight fog returned (which I know is normal since muscles take time to heal). Currently, the sharp pain is gone, but I have a very stiff spine/neck and a slight lingering mental fog.

My Questions for the Community:

  1. For those who study long hours for competitive exams, how did you fix your library/desk setup? Did book stands or laptop stands help you keep your neck perfectly straight?

  2. How long did it take for your cervical-induced brain fog to completely clear up once you fixed your posture and finished your meds?

  3. Any gentle ergonomic habits or micro-break routines (like the Pomodoro technique) that helped you prevent this from returning?

I am quite eager to get back to my schedule but terrified of triggering that heavy fog again. Any practical advice or success stories would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Advice Very bad sleep for weeks, because I feel and hear my heart beating.

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I know its so dumb, but I want to know if there is someone als else got the same problem.
My awarness goes to the beating of my heartbeat. Its just so confusing why this is happening! My attention is keeping me there were there is a problem to fall a sleep. And when I wake up its automaticly there. Its so frustrating. I accept, i let it be, I focus on other things. But nothing helps.
And its not that I’m afraid of an heart attack or something Els. Not at all! Its just that my focus on the feeling of my heartbeat. I don’t understand what that is..It keeps me sleeping very vivid.
Also I’m so mentally exausted 24/7 datdreaming with Brianfog. And this makes me so desperate.
Is this ocd? And is there a medication for it?
Maybe I found some answers Here because therapists don’t understand ether.
Maybe is this a dopamine, I don’t know…

Symptoms Memory loss concern

5.5 years ago I was punched in the eye area pretty hard. I developed a concussion as a result. Ever since that moment, I have developed profound memory loss. Before that incident, I had outstanding memory. Ever since I was punched, both my long term and short term memories took a toll with my long term memory taking a bigger toll. The names of people I knew and their specific details about them got easily mixed up. I don’t remember specific details anymore. I remember information that I learn in a two week time frame but if I stop revisiting it; it’s as if I never learned it. Things slightly improved but there was not much improvement overall. My long term memory is there but is hazy; similarly to my short term memory. This was the overall state of my memory until 6 months ago where I accidentally hit with a hard pillow. Both my long term and short term memories became worse. My poor ability to memorize became even worse. The impact from the pillow was light. Nothing too hard from the pillow. The impact from the pillow made my ability to focus worse. Then a month ago, I bumped by jaw against something and my memory worsened even more. I have difficulty focusing. Now I have to retrace what I read when I’m reading something. What should I do? Are there any medications that I can take that will return my memory back to where it was? Please don’t adverse any herbal supplements? What’s causing all this? Is there any hope of the memory loss going away with time or on its own? Also, what kind of doctor should I see for my symptoms and what kind of tests should I request the doctor to order for me?

Medical Study / Research DNA Changes Linked to Aging and Brain Fog After COVID-19

Thumbnail doi.org
19 Upvotes

Researchers looked at blood samples from 94 people who had recovered from COVID-19 about six months earlier. They studied DNA methylation, a chemical process that can influence how genes function and is often associated with aging. The analysis found age-related changes in thousands of areas of DNA, including several well-known aging markers.

The researchers also noticed changes near genes involved in glutamate and NMDA receptor signaling. These systems play important roles in memory, learning, and communication between brain cells, so they may be relevant to post-COVID symptoms such as brain fog. However, the study does not prove that COVID-19 caused these changes or that they are responsible for cognitive problems. It also did not compare the participants with people who had not had COVID-19, examine brain tissue, or include detailed cognitive testing. More research with larger groups, control participants, and direct measures of brain fog is needed before these findings can be used to guide treatment.
