New BED discord server!!

Hi everyone, exciting news! There's now an official discord server for this subredditšŸ„³šŸŽ‰! No need to worry about finding accountability buddies anymore, as this server includes channels for accountability and progress. It also has:

  • A 'support ping' you can use when feeling the urge to binge
  • Modmail to privately talk to staff in the server
  • A bot to add your birthday, so the server will announce when it's your birthday
  • Custom emojis
  • A confessions bot that allows you to anonymously confess something (even mods can't see who it is)
  • A channel to share TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram videos
  • Pets, selfies, ranting, lgbtq, support, memes, and art channels
  • Fun bots such as truth or dare, qotd, word chain and more!

This server has the same rules as the subreddit, so keep that in mind!!!

The most depraved or shameful binge?

I'm talking....
* eating stuff out of the bin
* eating your child's food
* baking a cake only to pull it out half way through cooking to eat it....

.... tell me I'm not alone....

Discussion Why do we track calories, but not what happens before the urge to eat?

We track what we ate, how much we ate, calories, protein, weight, and everything else.

But a lot of us barely track what was happening emotionally before the urge started.

For many people, overeating isn’t only about hunger. It can start with stress, loneliness, boredom, rejection, exhaustion, or that constant mental chatter around food that people sometimes call food noise.

I’m starting to think it can be just as useful to track the trigger as the food itself. Not necessarily in some complicated way. It could be a note on your phone, pen and paper, an app, or even just pausing and asking yourself: ā€œWhat happened right before this urge?ā€

You might not stop every binge, but at least the pattern becomes less invisible.

Does anyone here track their emotional triggers or food noise, rather than only the food?

It wasn't the food that was the most difficult part of adjusting my relationship with eating

The identity piece was, in my opinion, the most difficult. Because it becomes more difficult to change the habit if you start thinking that "I always cave," "I have no control," or "I ruin it every time." At that point, every binge feels like confirmation, every temptation feels like proof, and every mistake feels predictable.

That's why I think it's so important what we tell ourselves. Not because optimistic thinking fixes everything, but rather because identification can subtly perpetuate the loop.

What do people think of the fact that eating habits are more influenced by self-belief than we realize?

Discussion What was the first small habit that actually helped reduce your binge eating?

I've realized that lasting progress usually comes from small changes rather than trying to be perfect overnight.

For those who feel they're doing better now, what was the first habit that genuinely made a difference?

It could be something simple like changing your evening routine, eating more regularly, journaling, walking, or anything else.

I'd love to hear what worked for you and why.

On the verge of feeling hopeless šŸ˜”

I have had a binge eating disorder since I was 17. I am now 39. I was able to keep my weight under control until 9 years ago. When I went on the medication Abilify. I need to stay kn Abilify, it helps tremendously. But my weight skyrocketed, i went from 170 to 200! I was on Ozempic for 4 years for my type 2 diabetes. But I recently, about a month ago, had to go off of it. I began getting ao sick from frozen GI tract that I was hospitalized 3 times in 9 months.

Last night I had a binge, and I felt like shit about myself for hours afterwards.

I work with a therapist who specializes in CBT/DBT therapy. I work with a nutritionist who specializes in eating disorders. I have a psychiatrist. A whole team. But I just can't seem to fet my binge eating under control. I feel like I'm letting myself down and my support system and my doctors. Help?

Advice Needed Getting Help

Had an awful binge last night. Dare I say my worst one yet. But I actually am meeting with a therapist today for the first time ever to help me with this binge eating. I guess it’s kind of beneficial that this happened last night, because good god I am feeling all the emotions right now and it’ll be easier to explain to her.

I guess I just want to know how your first therapy session went when it comes to binge eating? My hope is that I can get some combination of therapy with medication. It’s hard for me to communicate what triggers my binges. All I know is that I’m in a constant state of fight or flight because my health is already declining (super high cholesterol and blood sugar) and these binges make it worse.

Kind of nervous, any advice is appreciated :)

Advice Needed tips on getting out of a binge cycle??

Ever since May ive been stuck in a horrible binge cycle for weeks and I just feel so miserable. I had lost weight going from 68-9kg down to 58kg in April but then May hit and all of a sudden I was constantly binging and now have been stuck binging on 4000ish calories most days for 5 weeks and have gained back most of the weight I lost originally. I'm so embarrassed to go out and spend time with people because I don't want them to notice my weight gain. I just need help and advice on how to get out of this binge cycle because I don't want to fall back into my BED.

Progress Metformin is helping with my psychotropic-medication-induced binging

I finally made my way to a medical doctor who specializes in eating disorders. I told her how I feel frustrated because most BED treatment has to do with addressing trauma and mental illness, but I don’t have any of that. Rather, my binging is very, very strongly (pretty much exclusively) correlated with my dose of amitriptyline, which I take for severe chronic migraines.

This doctor told me that for patients experiencing increased appetite and weight gain as a side effect of psychotropic medications such as TCAs or 2nd-generation antipsychotics, metformin can slow or stop the gain. Since starting it 3 weeks ago, my binging episodes have all but disappeared. Yes, I over-eat pretty frequently or compulsively snack when I’m bored or in pain, but I haven’t felt that total, desperate loss of control.

Hope this helps someone!

Don’t experiment with keto

I’ve been trying out keto in order to

  1. Prevent sugar crashes
  2. Clear out my skin
  3. Control food noise

You could probably guess what happened….
I binged on a ton of butter.

To be fair, I actually felt quite good on this diet. However, I’m experiencing a lot of stress, and instead of doing the stressfull things, I tend to eat to suppress the negative emotions. Probably going for a walk now.

The only positive is that I don’t PHYSICALLY feel bad at all. No excessive bloating or fatigue.

binged after 51 days binge free šŸ’”

i binged for the first time in ages and im upset about it. but it feels different this time as im refusing to beat myself up about it. it's definitely not the worst binge i had, so im just going to put this day behind me and carry on as normal tomorrow.

i have a hectic week ahead of me and i know a change in schedule usually increases my chance of binging but being incredibly busy usually makes me less likely to think about food so hopefully it'll balance out.

im just frustrated as i wonder if i'll ever fully heal my relationship with food. for the past two years, ive been so used to counting calories and eating what i want within my maintainence calories. but there was a time where i never thought about calories and ate whatever i wanted. i had always been a stable weight until i developed hyperthyroidism. when treating my hyperthyroidism, i then got hypothyroidism and gained lots of weight, which really ruined my relationship with food.

51 days was such an achievement and i felt like i was finally changing my relationship with food for good, so it's such a shame to have a setback.

Vent I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DOWNPLAY MY PROBLEMS

Context: I used to have an ed and I gained all my weight back by the bounce back effect (severe hunger)

So basically I used to have an restrictive ed prior to getting bed and I don’t suffer with severe hunger just I struggle to not turn to food when I’m sad or bored and I binge like I’m on autopilot. And whenever I tell someone about it and my context they just rub it off as severe hunger when it isn’t!!! I’m stressed about my weight and past binges and what I eat then I binge!!! UGHHH

This is a rant please don’t try to deny my OBVIOUS STRESS EATING. YOU ARE NOT ME.

difference between binge and overeating?

can someone please explain the difference between overeating and binge eating using actual examples of foods.
I have a broad understanding of the main differences but I see lots of people sharing their "binge" stories and to me it looks like normal overeating.

Strategies to Try Stop caring about protein and fasting times

Just stop.

I remember my BED rising after learning about IF and protein (and trust me, you don’t need even half as much as fitness gurus would like you to believe). Before that, my relationship with food was pretty peaceful, sometimes I overate, sometimes I ate lighter and I was good.

After I stopped caring about the things above, suddenly things got better. Not ideal but MUCH better compared to the cesspool that was in my head before. Especially since protein/fasting doesn’t do shit for my cravings/food noise and BED isn’t connected to satiety per se.

Start eating enough and stop caring about minmaxxing your eating.

Considering taking a GLP-1 (mounjaro) while breastfeeding my 13 month old to get rid of food noise.

I have had a binge eating disorder for coming on two decades. Coupled with OCD and severe anxiety, it has made my life hell for as long as I can remember. I just can't do it anymore.

I want to try a low dose of Mounjaro and am encouraged by the recent findings that it is safe to use while breastfeeding. I plan on weaning at some point, and since my LO is 13 months old, they're not going to be exposed to it long term.

Has anyone taken a GLP-1 to help with food noise, and perhaps while breastfeeding?

I'd love to hear your experience.

Strategies to Try Food on repeat?

Has anyone found it helpful to eat the same breakfast, lunch, snack and/or dinner on repeat while recovering from bingeing? I wonder if the less decisions I have to make week to week could reduce binge frequency/urges.

Was making progress with BED but had a huge relapse in past couple weeks :((

Support Needed Has anything actually helped you recover from binge eating? Medications, GLP-1s, peptides… I’m desperate.

I’ve struggled with binge eating disorder since I was about 12 years old. I’m an adult now (27F), and I feel like I’ve spent more of my life fighting food than actually living.

I’ve tried doing it naturally countless times. I’ll have periods where I’m doing amazing, sometimes even for 6 months. Then something happens, I binge once, and it spirals until I’m right back where I started. It’s exhausting and honestly heartbreaking.

I’m at the point where I don’t think I can beat this disorder through willpower alone anymore.

For those of you who have actually seen improvement or recovered, what helped?

GLP-1 medications (Zepbound, Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro, etc.)?

Retatrutide or other peptides?

Vyvanse?

Contrave?

Therapy?

Anything else?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have had binge eating disorder for years, not just occasional overeating. Did anything actually quiet the constant food noise? Did it help stop the cycle of obsessing over food and feeling out of control?

I know there’s no magic fix, but I’d really appreciate hearing honest experiences. I just want my life back, and I’m finally ready to admit I probably need more help than trying to ā€œjust have more self-control.ā€

I recently had surgery on my spine for a herniated disc, where being overweight is absolutely not ideal in having a bad back. I’m 250lbs, and desperately need to be at least 160lbs. But I’m stuck in this endless loop of yo yo dieting and then growing depressed and eating again ( •̀ į“– •́ )

Thank you to anyone willing to share. ā¤ļø

Discussion Is Counting Calories Helpful Or Harmful?

I recently was able to go 3 days without binging which was a super big success for me since I had been binging non stop for 6 months. Today I was able to attempt not binging, but I realized that I eat pretty high caloric foods. I may not be binging, but I’m not really sure how much I eat in a caloric sense, and I do want to stabilize my weight instead of gaining any more. I do find counting calories a bit triggering but I was wondering what the general consensus of the community is. I’m still new to my BED diagnosis and I’m trying to navigate it all.

Small victory!!

I went on a walk yesterday and I forgot to eat. In practise, it meant I was tired when I was walking, but I was really happy that I was so consumed with the idea of going on a walk that food wasn’t my primary thought. Like my whole life literally revolves around food and I managed to forget!!!! It’s definitely not something that should be normalised ofc but it’s just the principle of the fact that food wasn’t on my mind and it made me feel slightly better about myself :)

Why ā€œjust restrict moreā€ often backfires

I used to believe that the solution was to follow the plan exactly, be more locked in, and be harsher when it came to eliminating trigger foods. However, many people fail to discover comfort through limitations. The more food is prohibited, the more pressure it puts on you, the more anxious you become, and the more likely you are to lose it later. For this reason, I don't believe that most individuals need further punishment when it comes to eating. They require an improved method to comprehend why the loop persists

Just wondering whether others have experienced restrictions making cravings louder instead of quieter?
