Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For AC to borrow or buy ?

I’m sure i’m not the first person nor will i be the last. But does anyone have an AC they are willing to part with. Please Dm, Yesterday was miserable between my home, work and running errands there hasn’t been a single bit of cool air or relief and It’s starting to make me feel crazy, as someone who comes from the land of central AC in every home I learned my lesson!

Looking For Where to find cutesy sun dresses?

Hey I am looking for cute, somewhat affordable sun dresses. I’d like to go somewhere in person instead of shopping online. All the major big stores don’t seem to have a lot of knee length or short options (check Kohls, Macys, H&M, and Old Navy). Anyone know any Portland options that aren’t boutiques where it’s $100 a dress?

Looking For Looking for a pet sitter in PDX. Any reliable suggestions?

I recently moved to PDX and have not made a whole lot of community yet. I’m taking a few long weekend trips over the next several months and looking for reliable pet sitters. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I’m located in east Portland. I have two dogs, both are generally really sweet but can be a bit sassy so I’m looking for someone who is experienced with different kinds of dogs.

Where can I get a big, fluffy, moist coconut macaroon? Preferably with no chocolate on the bottom, but I won't be that picky.

Looking For Portland allergies have been insane the past week, anyone else?

I've been looking at pollen levels in Portland and nothing stands out in particular. There are moderate grass and ragweed levels, so that might be the issue. I did notice however that "dust & dander" has been very high in the area. As a person who does not know much about much, does anyone know if this is related to the fires in eastern Oregon, or this crazy "fungal storm" in the southwest?

Other theories, experiences, solutions welcome. I've vacuumed and dusted my house and changed the filters, but I'm still having difficulty sleeping at night with half my face stuffed. :')

Looking For Favorite place for dumplings?

Ive always been a little obsessed with dumplings in every way shape and form. I really like Master Kong, they are great but it's kind of my go to. There used to be a great food truck downtown called the dump truck that had really interesting ones. There was also a Russian lady on Sandy blvd that made delicious dumplings. Noone can beat my grandma's ravioli. The trucks I used to know are closed and I need some new stuff. Send me your favorites! I don't have a preference of cultures I really like them all.

Looking For Fun activities for a 11yo and Dad?

Upvotes

I'm taking my son out for something fun this weekend in celebration of my birthday. Looking for some fun suggestions we haven't tried yet. He likes games of any kind, hands on science, and music. He's not a fan of museums unfortunately. Things we've done so far and enjoyed:

- Glowing greens putt putt

- Omsi

- Zoo

- Ground Kontrol arcade

- Next Level Pinball Museum

Bonus: if you know of any interesting dessert places that would be cool too. Thanks!

Looking For Do you know the guy in the black cape at Bike Prom?!

Saturday night, at the pedalpalooza Bike Prom, one of the dance parties was over by the large industrial tanks in front of the garage doors.

We had been dancing a while to these two tow-behind bike speaker setups. I noticed the guy in the black cape had started to run around the dance floor in a big circle, I joined in and we started a literal whirl pool on the dancefloor! People jumped right in, running around in big circle, laughing, strutting, skipping, dancing, it was a thing of beauty!

Never got the guy's name, but I've thought about him and this dancefloor whirlpool each day since.

Looking For Camping spot recs?

Upvotes

Hello wonderful portlanders,

Me and 6-7 of my friends would like to go camping in late August. We are looking for camping sites within 2 hours(maybe 3 if it’s worth it) from Portland.

We want somewhere that’s basically drive up to it since we have some people in our group who can’t walk long distances.

We also would love a spot with day hikes/ swimming!!!

We want to be cognizant of central Oregon fires during this time as well.
I hope it’s not too late to book something:-)

Really looking forward to it!

Thank you for any recs u might have!

Looking For Seeking private landlord?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I moved to Portland a couple of months ago, and now that I’ve had some time to get settled, I’m starting to think I’m probably overpaying for my apartment.
I’ve heard that renting from private landlords can sometimes be a better deal than going through the big property management companies. Does anyone have advice on how to find private landlords in the Portland area? Are there neighborhoods, websites, Facebook groups, or other resources you’d recommend?
I’m looking for a studio or one-bedroom and would love to save some money if possible. I’d also be interested in hearing about your experiences renting from private landlords versus larger management companies.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Looking For Recommendations on pdx elopement photographers?

Upvotes

My fiancé and I recently got engaged and we have always wanted to have a tiny wedding or just elope. Like everyone we’re trying to save money but we still want photos for family and ourselves because we realize we will probably not invite a lot of family members if any.

We were looking at photographers and they run around $2,000-5,000+ for weddings for a 4 hour package which sadly is out of our budget and way more than we need.

We absolutely want to pay the artists a fair wage and we understand that the cost factors in time, experience, skill, editing, equipment, software etc. but we’re just looking for someone who could run down to the court house with us for an hour or come to a tiny ceremony.

We would love to support someone trying to get experience or who’s new to the industry and working on building a portfolio

Looking For Why doesn’t the city sell Tom Dundon the Moda Center?

The whole moda center debacle is puzzling to me. The city of Portland owns the Moda Center and that seems to be why Tom Dundon doesn’t want to pay for renovations. He argues it’s like asking a renter to pay for repairs instead of the landlord. He doesn’t want to pay a dime for it.

In response, the state, Multnomah county, and city of Portland need to bankroll $600million. The State already pledged some money and I guess they’re just waiting for the city?

This $600 million dollar funding could be better used on schools (all of the public universities aside from UO & OSU aren’t doing too hot), healthcare, food benefits, I mean you name it.

I know selling him the Moda Center is not ideal, but it seems like a way better offer than pledging $600 million dollars? Am I missing something? Why not just give him the arena and then make him pay for the renovations? No taxpayer money gets used and the Blazers stay in Portland? Win win?

Edit: I’m not talking about just the arena itself, but the entire land around it that’s owned by the city for future businesses.

Looking For Aetna primary care recommendations?

TL;DR: 26F, looking for a female PCP covered by Aetna health insurance in the Portland metro area.

I scheduled an appointment a year and a half ago with a female doctor at The Portland Clinic. Got a call yesterday, one month out, that my doctor is unavailable for my appt and they have to reschedule. The kicker is, the next available appointment with a female doctor is for August 2027…

I’ve also tried scheduling with a couple other PCPs recommended through the Aetna app, but everyone I’ve contacted so far is booking 6 months to a year out as well. I’ve made some back up appts, but with them all being so far away I’m nervous they’ll just get “rescheduled” as well.

Does anyone have any recommendations or tips for establishing care with a PCP?

Appreciative of any leads or general advice!

Note: I know there is always the option for seeing a male doctor, but because I’m trying to establish care with a PCP I’d really prefer to have a female doctor long term.

Looking For HVAC Maintenance Company?

The HVAC company that installed my system has a maintenance plan I pay for that includes spring and fall maintenance, annual water heater flushing, and free plumbing checks. I pay monthly and all that is covered. It’s a good deal, but I found out this company was bought by private equity.

I’m looking for a new company that has a similar maintenance plan, but is individually and locally owned.

Looking For Drag queen makeover?

Hi, my very cool aunt told me she would love to have a drag queen put her in full drag makeup some time and her birthday is coming up. Does anybody know any queens who would do this and what it might cost? She’s very special, accepting, and creative and I would love to make her dream come true.

Anywhere that does dog paw preservation/taxidermy in/around Portland area?

The time has come where I must say goodbye to my best friend. Will be doing in home euthanasia to make it as comforting as possible. I’ve been thinking of all the ways to memorialize her, I’ve got lots of fur collected, paw and nose prints, stepping stone. I think I’d like to have her cremated but I’d really love to be able to keep her paws preserved in some way. I just can’t stop thinking about never being able to hold her paws again and they’re such a comfort and I think they’d help me through the grief tremendously.
I’m in Columbia county, but wondering if anyone has any experience with this? If this is something anybody offers in the Portland or surrounding areas?

Looking For What's the competitive youth soccer scene like in Portland?

We are considering moving to Portland from an area with a very active, dense and competitive youth soccer scene. Lots of very committed kids and families, year-round play, lots of travel, etc. It's a "soccer hotbed" kind of area. That level of craziness, but we like it and most importantly our kid likes it. What is the youth soccer scene like in Portland, particularly for boys? Is there anything with that level of constant activity?

Looking For Great pancake spot with outdoor seating + vegan options?

Hi! My husband’s birthday is coming up and he’s a big pancake fan. Hoping to find a breakfast place to take him to that meets the following requirements:

  • Has excellent pancakes
  • Has outdoor seating
  • Has vegan option(s) on the menu for myself (but the vegan option doesn’t have to be pancakes)

    Thank you!
