Really happy to have received my first position offer. I know art is K-12, but my favorite grade levels are definitely middle school. So I’m happy this new job includes that but it also includes MORE than just 6-8, it has K-5 attached too.

I’m worried my students will be such a wide range of abilities. So many different projects going on at once. Am I in over my head? Or should I just accept this position. Otherwise I was just going to be a kelly sub this next school year. So I guess I’d rather teach art than sub, but still.

Any suggestions, tips? I have to have a winter and spring art show also. Worried about how best to keep track of all these different projects going on. K-8 is such a wide span I feel… or is it not?

It’s my first teaching job since graduating. This offer is decent pay (expected for first-time) and benefits. School is small about 600 students I think. And that’s total throughout all grade levels. So at least it’s a small school.

hi yall! I’m currently in community college and majoring in elementary education to transfer to SDSU.

i love art, and have loved working with kids and teens who love art as well (I used to be a behavior tech).

thing is, as much as I love creating art, teaching, giving advice, etc, I know that doing it as a career is usually not the greatest for many, which is why I’m choosing to major in elementary education, but plan to teach art in highschool somewhere down the road, which I know will require more schooling and a single subject cert.

i guess my main questions are:

has any one taken a similar career path? if you had one career prior to teaching art, how did you decide to take the dive? what’s your experience like teaching art vs multi subject, whether it be with the students themselves or with the school system? additionally, what schools did you go to (so that I can better gauge what this path would look like on my end lol)

pay is a concern of course, as with everything in this economy, but if I’m going to go from one underpaid profession to another, might as well enjoy what I do, right ?

Hello! I hope you are all well. I’m in a bit of a career rut, and been exploring what may be a more fulfilling move in the next few years. I’ve always been passionate about art, took multiple art/design classes in high school and college, summer camps, extracurriculars, etc, as well as been in educator positions during high school and summers of college. I have a degree in Communications/Media and Marketing and I’m currently working a 9-5 corporate administrative job.
While this job feels stable and decent-paying, I hate sitting at the desk all day, staring at my computer and punching numbers. I’m in my early 20s, and hoping I can make a career change soon.
I enjoy working with children and teens, and was hoping I may be able to apply this towards becoming an art teacher. However, I’m really not sure what my next steps would be. I only have my bachelors degree in Comms/Marketing - Are there programs that I can enroll in while still being employed full-time? It seems a lot of programs are geared towards individuals with a specific bachelors in fine arts. Do I need to fulfill a specific amount of art credits before receiving a certification? What certification(s) are needed?
Any insight on this process would be greatly appreciated, and I would love to hear anyone’s advice regarding the transition from corporate to teaching.

Hi guys I am currently in my 2nd year of college pursuing a Fine Arts degree. I was curious as to how becoming a teacher would work if I complete all 4 years of my school with just a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. I was considering majoring in Art Education but at the moment, I don't want to commit to education yet and I'd rather focus on my artistic skills and portfolio at the moment. (I want options after I graduate!) I did look online and I found stuff about Alternative Teaching Certificates and that seems like something I would do after I graduate, but I would like some insight from art teachers or people who are on the same journey as I am!

Hello all!

School starts Aug 17th and I am excited for my first year teaching! I have full year lesson plans for all of my grades EXCEPT for 7th grade! I just can't think of ideas they might find fun. Brain empty.

I am on bedrest due to a knee i jury and using the time to finish up all my slides and documents and demos, so right now 7th grade is kinda my priority. Does anyone have anything they do with their 7th graders they'd be willing to share? Just to get the brain juices flowing.

Would appreciate any brainstorming :)

Here is a series of works on paper by my adult students, developed from a painting by Anton Henning and a photograph of a skull (see last slide).
The goal was not to copy the painting itself, but to understand and replay the disruptive strategy at work in the artist's practice.

Hi all! I am thinking about how I want to teach expectations to my middle schoolers this year. This group is highly interested in comics. I was thinking that I could have the students take a day to create short comic strips that demonstrate ways they can follow the expectations or examples of not following expectations.

Example would be: Expectation is being safe. Student draws a three panel comic of someone throwing paper airplanes during class and poking someone in the head with the pointy airplane. Their paper airplane is thrown away and they lose their access to art materials for that day. This was an example of not following expectations!

I feel like I am on the right track, but I want to up the engagement. I assume their examples would be a bit sillier, which is totally fine. However, I thought this would allow them to think more deeply about what is expected of them, and possibly allow them to use their OC in a work of art. Any tips? Thoughts? Am I crazy for thinking this is a good idea? Thanks!

Wondering if anyone here is or was a student at DePaul who went into the Animation program as well as doing Art Media and Design. Or did you go to one or the other? What was your experience like, and would you recommend doing both if it is possible (I'm thinking of majoring in both)?

I work a full-time job and will be going to community college first to complete my gen eds this fall before transferring to university. Any advice on classes (and Art classes) I can take that will transfer so I don't have to pay too much towards classes at university?

Hi, I'm Ayush Srivastava, and I am currently in the 12th grade. Next year, I plan to appear for the MEXT Specialized Training College exam in the design field. However, I am really anxious about the interview round. I keep wondering: if I clear the written exam, will my current art and craft skills be enough to help me pass the interview?

Right now, I am under a lot of pressure with my 12th-grade board exams, so I have stopped working on my art. I feel stuck in a dilemma—if I spend time on my skills, my 12th-grade marks might drop. But if I don't practice, my portfolio will suffer. How can I balance both? Also, is anyone else here preparing for the MEXT exam in the design field?

I host some watercolor art workshops every now and then in Bangalore for groups and someone approached me to teach private lessons. I have no clue how much to ask for. Does anyone know what’s the range for private lessons?

high school art teacher going into my 2nd year teaching!

last year, for folders i had them make “portfolios” by folding big 18x24” papers and taping the sides of it. the folders were super cute and their first assignment was to decorate it. but they started using these folders to hoard pencils and they would get so full because they would never take their stuff home despite me constantly reminding them to.

the more annoying part was that i used these filing drawers that we had. they were pretty deep, but even so it would be a bit of a mess having my students locate their folders every day. sometimes they would put them in the wrong drawers and we wouldnt be able to find it. other times they would get smushed because they overfilled it instead of using the next drawer (each class had 2, organized alphabetically except most people didnt listen)

so for next year i decided that my art 1 students (5 sections) are going to use regular pocket folders. their sketchbook goes in one pocket and their worksheet goes in the other. that way they cant hide materials or anything and they wont be able to hoard their papers as easily. my advanced class (1 section) will still do the portfolios, and any larger pieces ill just collect.

what im stuck on is how i should organize them. should i go back to the filing drawers and see if the pocket folders make it easier? i have a full length cabinet with shelves with a lot of space that i feel like i could use. maybe each class gets their own bins? how do you guys do it and what do you recommend? id preferably like to have it be something my students have access to so they can grab their folders as they walk in and get set up.

The first thing we do is take an oath with our right hand up. I’m teaching adults. My oath is similar to the one they have in “Let’s Make Art” on YouTube:

- I understand art is self-expression: there is no good or bad, right or wrong.
- I promise not to compare my art to others’.
- I promise to allow myself to have fun!

That’s how we start.
The sweet young woman I taught on Wednesday got through just the oath and I thought she was going to cry.

“Well, that’s an intense therapy session right there,” she said. “It’s ok, we’ve all been there,” I said. She said she had been told as a child that her art was no good. We make such an impact on young minds, it is a huge honor and responsibility to teach.

There are three ways to mix colors with watercolors: wet on wet (least control), glazing, color mixing on the palette (most control).

Start with easiest. Lay out a red, yellow, blue in a pan for each student. Have them make touching circles of water on their paper. Then, drop small amounts of each color into the circles.

While that is drying, have them make circles (bubbles or balloons) of washed-out yellow, red and blue on a paper. The circles don’t touch. Let this dry.

Third practice: mix colors in the pallet: oranges, pinks, purples, greens. Make circles of all the colors you’ve created on the paper. They don’t touch.

I recently graduated and have started the wonderful process of applying for jobs. I've interviewed for two positions so far and been rejected for both of them, so I feel like my interviewing game needs some work. I have another interview in a few days and wanted to see if anyone had any advice!

I have heard to research the school which I've been doing and to practice answering questions which I've also done.
