Sometimes you start a show and the first few episodes just do not click with you. Maybe the opening arc is slow, the MC starts out annoying, or the world-building takes a long time to kick in. But then you finally give it another shot, power through the slow start, and it ends up becoming one of your absolute favorite series of all time. For me, that was Steins;Gate—the first few episodes felt super confusing, but once the plot kicked in, I could not stop watching. What is an anime that took you 2 or 3 tries to finally get into, but turned out to be an absolute masterpiece?

So i was scrolling through the new anime s that came out in the last 3 years, and im kinda disappointed in the thing that the name is kinda long, the story isn't useing the formula that was used around 2010 till 2018. The Fanservice that i used to watch in anime's like Highschool DxD, Blood Lad, Highschool of the dead, Sekirei, etc. isn't the same, i mean there are still the fan service but its no the same.

Its me or im getting old?

Anyway, what other ecchi anime you could recommend me to watch/rewatch? Hope it will have a decent story too beside the Fanservice.

I wanna watch something where the male MC is reliant or like "inferior"? to the female MC in one way or another. It could be that a boy who is shy, gets hurt all the time, or is "dumber" also, and the female MC has to contradict the boy MC's traits.

I’ve watched around 170 anime along with some manga and most of them are just the popular + psychological horror animes! Although my best genre used to be psychological horror, I have been trying out many from all genres recently. I am aware that there are many, many great shows out there that I have yet to see, but after finishing most of what the masses recommend, I can’t seem to move onto another one without a specific recommendation; and chatgpt’s recommendations are.. predictable. I need an anime to recommend for a 10 yr old child to enjoy they really liked spy x family

I'm a history buff and, in particular, lately I've become really into the character of Hijikata Toshizo.

For this reason, the anime that people recommend to me most often is Hakuouki.

However, I've noticed that I keep running into reviews of this series that are all pretty much the same, like: "Wow both Hijikata and Kondo are super mega sexy, I think something happened between them in the past and I'm going to write at least 95 fanfics about it. But I'll write even more about the love triangle between the two of them and the female protagonist. Obviously I'll also have to find the time to write about ten filler episodes about her doubts regarding the other members of their group."

So my question is very simple: I have absolutely nothing against romantic anime (in fact i really like them) and I can tolerate harem/reverse harem plots if they're done intelligently.

However i would like to watch something that, while not being a Japanese history university textbook, at least offers a minimum of historical coherence, seasoned with duels, battles and possibly a bit of intrigue.

Given that, would you say Hakuouki is for me?

I personally like the Death Note and Attack on Titan too much. It's not just the action, but the thrill and suspense full environment where in every episode you think what would happen in the next episode and makes you kind of an addict until you finish the anime. The amount of craze it drives in the mind, the emotions which it brings out of me and many more things which can't be just explained in words. Suggest me something to watch which gives me such similar level of emotions. I have got a few days left in my holidays, I could probably one shot them just like i did AOT in 3.5 days

Basically the title. I recently finished Attack on Titan after just not getting around to finishing it for several years and now I’m wondering what other masterpieces I need to give more of a chance to. Here’s what I’ve dropped that I have some curiosity about:

Rising of the Shield Hero
I loved the first season but dropped it 3 episodes into the second season because it just wasn’t doing it for me.

Angel Beats
I keep hearing good things about this one but I watched only the first episode and the first episode was a difficult watch for me.

Frieren
Said by many to be one of the goats. I gave this 12 episodes and for me the only “payoff moment” for all of that build up was when Stark faced off against the dragon. The climax with Aura felt more like neat back story than an epic battle.

Monster
I stopped watching like 10 years ago in the vicinity of episode 35. The anime was feeling really slow by then despite me initially having a strong hook to the plot, and I think it just got away from me when I picked up Sword Art Online. Speaking of which…

I stopped somewhere between episode 10 and 12. I don’t remember why I stopped watching it.

Naruto
I think I stopped at the end of season 9 of Shippuden (right before the Kage Summit). I had been reading the manga as it was released and was not looking forward to the ninja war, and the animation during the Pain arc was abysmal.

So which of these, if any, are the biggest violations of anime culture?

Spoilers ahead

I’ll start by saying that I still enjoyed the show for what it was and I didn’t regret watching it. It’s a good show. But the hype is overblown.

The show is essentially about Tenma travelling and his positivity rubbing off on everyone he meets. And about Nina trying to regain her memories. That’s it, that’s the show. The rest is all just there. Johan only exists to tie Tenma and Nina together, to give Tenma a reason to be an outlaw on the run and a reason for Nina’s storyline to start.

The length of the show and endless filler

About less than halfway through I realized that all the slow moments weren’t going to amount to this insanely good payoff. Around the episode where Tenma gets the orphaned girl to laugh and the stoic veteran guy (that teaches Tenma how to use a gun) gets hit in the feels over it made me realize that these were the true highlights of the show. So when I started seeing the show in that way and stopped watching purely for the next crazy moment, it became more enjoyable for me.

Nevertheless, I do still feel like the show did disappoint in the long run. Eventually I got bored of Nina’s trauma with her flashbacks. Eventually I stopped caring about Johan’s past. And worst of all I eventually got bored with seeing Jesus Tenma. His morals never change and seeing him “struggle” with another moral quandary felt pointless because he never caves and never changes.

The show just beats the same drum over and over and naturally its impact is going to get weaker everytime. It’s just way longer than it needed to be. The entire thing could be 30 episodes instead of 74 and they’d be able to fit it in and show you everything that matters. The last 10 episodes I was pretty much done and just powered through it because I wanted to be done with it. The revelations in the end do not feel that rewarding especially when the show teases you with it the entire time. It’s not building up to some Breaking Bad Ozymandias moment where the whole world gets flipped upside down.

Also another thing is the soundtrack. It’s terrific but the length of the show makes it so you hear those same emotional tracks over and over. Eventually I’d just say to myself oh here comes that cool music again which has zero impact anymore lol.

The Villain

This was a huge disappointment to me after hearing all the hype about Johan being one of the greatest villains perhaps in all of fiction. He’s barely in it and you rarely see him actually do anything evil. Now I can understand and get behind the concept of a villain who is operating behind the scenes and is casting a shadow over the whole story. I’m all on board with that. But this just wasn’t it. Johan is a villain because the show says so and you better just take its word for it. It’s a bad case of telling instead of showing.

The scene where he kills the guy in the parking garage in front of Tenma is the height of his villainy and it happens within the first few episodes. It really felt like Tenma was seeing something that he shouldn’t have and the consequences were going to be dire. From then on it’s all mostly downhill for Johan. The show just tells you that he’s a mastermind but you never really see it yourself. He’s got aura, no doubt. But that’s pretty much all he has.

Characters never change

There are some that do like Eva and honestly I do like lots of the characters. But Tenma, Nina and Johan are the exact same characters at the beginning and at the end.

Tenma has a huge moment where he finally pulls the trigger on a bad guy and kills him. At this point we’re about halfway through the show. So naturally I’m thinking “ok this is it, a huge development in Tenma’s character”. But then later on it’s revealed that the guy he shot didn’t even die and Tenma never behaves any differently even when he thought he had killed someone. I wasn’t expecting him to become bloodthirsty or anything but just a little change would have been nice.

Nina’s whole story is about regaining her memories and discovering her true self and at the end she’s the same person that she was before her journey started.
