Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)
This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Photo Need help finding the location of mine and my wifes first kiss
As the title shows, me and my wife had our first kiss in amsterdam while I was travelling for work and she was visiting family around 4 years ago, We had gone on what was supposed to be a 2 hour date that ended up as a 12 hour date and culminated in our first kiss sat in this random mini park while eating a mcdonalds.
All I remember about the park was that it was very small, Had a set of swings, was around central amsterdam, benches to sit on and was tucked inbetween rows of houses, one of the walls next to the park had graffiti of animals also
Attached is my crude layout of the park
Please if you have any knowledge of where this park is let me know, I want to surprise her with a date there as a wedding anniversary gift
EDIT: THE PARK HAS BEEN FOUND!!, I can never thank the members of r/amsterdam enough for this, One of the best days of my life that Ive spent years searching for the location of and this subreddit found it within a few hours. Ive already planned our flights and im booking the hotels now, We both havent been back to the netherlands in years and every once in a while I mention that date and we laugh about it.
Definitely getting the exact same mcdonalds order and sitting in that park, but this time I wont stare at her for 30 minutes while being too scared to kiss her 😭

Vondelparkpaviljoen illustration
Hi there,
I illustrated the Vondelparkpaviljoen. This is my first attempt to post my drawings, and I am excited to start a new sketchbook (again, once more). I'm new in the Netherlands and hope to share more in the future :)
Would love to hear suggestions of other places and their history, I learn a lot while drawing these.
*Not sure if this is the best flair to use

Goed koopje
Deze fietsenboer in de Pijp heeft standaard ouwe barrels voor een paar honderd euro buiten staan wat al bizar genoeg is, maar deze verrotte postcode Loterij fiets voor die prijs is wel echt de grootste grap van de stad

Would this be from the Gouden Gids?
Hi everyone, hope you're all well! I am trying to find a physical or scanned copy of this directory? Could this be from the Gouden Gids or a similar business directory?
Are there any online archives? I think it's from around 1990.

Photo Expat hate + Salt commercial in Oud-West
Hello there!
Earlier today someone placed this notice on the corridor inside my apartment complex's entry hall. It is not known if it was placed by someone who actually lives there or someone that was able to get in.
There were cases of a couple of delivery pakketjes being stolen previously, but not sure how this qualifies.
Complex has 70% Dutch owners, 30% foreign immigrants like myself.
And what the hell is that about the salt? I sent a message to the company asking if this is just a troll mixed with hate, or if it's actual corporate policy from them. Any one ever seen anything like this?
Reminded me of EDIT weird racial/us-vs-them stuff. At least I got a good laugh out of it by calling my GF a volksverrader and a bloedverrader by being with me, a terrifying non-European that just buys the cheapest possible salt available and does not drink oatmilk or matcha.
Still love NL ❤️
Translation below:
NOTICE:
Concerns the total annexation and dilapidation of our complex
To the expat invasion and the spineless Dutch who sold the place out to them, take a good look in the mirror the next time you block the sidewalk with your way-too-expensive cargo bike. You haven't changed this neighborhood, you have colonized it. When we walk through the streets, we don't hear a word of Dutch anymore. Just that arrogant, Anglicized office whining from losers who are too lazy to integrate properly.
You are driving rental prices up so extremely that the average, hard-working Dutch person has no choice but Almere or Lelystad, and what do we get in return? A bunch of parasites who don't speak the language, ignore their neighbors in the elevator, and replace the local culture with oat milk terror, matcha bars, and gluten-free junk.
If you come here to fill your pockets and take our houses anyway, starting today you will pay a local tax for it.
Real Dutch people don't gorge on pink Himalayan salt or French designer flakes from the organic supermarket. We eat salt from our own North Sea: Zandvoort Salt. Is this a tradition we are going to uphold, or will you drop out of this too amidst the total decay of our city?
Do you want to keep up the pretense that you have even a gram of respect for the country that is sucking you dry? Buy our salt and shove it on your chips. Or on your fries. We don't give a damn, as long as you pay. Don't like it? Then pack your bags and just fuck off back to your own country or village, you fucking jerk.
P.S. Yes expats, this is about you. Buy local salt or go away.

This Week: Asian Queer Film Screenings in Amsterdam🎬
cinemathepulse.comFriday, July 24, at 6:30 PM at The Pulse Cinema for The Last Year of Darkness by Benjamin Mullinkosson, an acclaimed Asian queer documentary. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director.
THE LAST YEAR OF DARKNESS (2023)
As the city of Chengdu changes, the future of beloved club Funky Town is unclear. For a vibrant group of DJs, drag performers, lovers, ravers, and skaters this is a sanctuary for underground partying and allows them to thrive after the sun sets. It's the one place that accepts them for who they really are, whilst they run away from their problems during the day.
With construction cranes looming from an encroaching metro station, the friends are forced to face what brought them to the party in the first place and make the most of their remaining time there.

A Service worker in Zuid deliberately pointed leafblower to cyclists, dirtying us all with dust and dirt this morning.
Should I report this?
A service worker today in Olympiaplein at around 8.50 AM raised the leafblower to face level to point the street dirt directly onto us cyclists in the lane.
Multiple particles entered my right eye, where I got a surgery 2 weeks ago, and I needed to run to the office bathroom to clean it up. I now fear there might be infections.
Where would you report this?
Anyone else who was there this morning? Maybe we can file a joint complaint.
Thank you!

Photo Anyone knows where this is? Wanna recreate late cousins picture!
Hello, we are trying to find the exact souvenir/gift shop that has big yellow clogs in it because that's where our late cousin took a picture. We would like to recreate it to honor him!
The problem is we have no clue where it is, but I did find a flickr account with that exact shop and possible clues, from their photos it seems it's between McDonalds on Muntplein and crossing of Leidsestraat and Keizergracht or somewhere close by! We will walk through this route, but if anyone has any clue I'd appreciate it! Photo was taken 13 years ago so it might not look like that or exist anymore:(
The shop looks like this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/100374164@N03/9523393745/in/photostream/lightbox/
You can also scroll left and right to see clues for yourself:)
edit: copy and pasted my q&a comment since i didn't think this would get approved

Black and Black-friendly spaces in Amsterdam?
Hi all!
Me and my friend are looking for more Black and Black-friendly spaces in Amsterdam. Cafes, bars, events, social spaces, etc. Anything really...
I know about the daily thread, but since the question is more niche, I'm hoping it will get more traction as a separate post, I also search the sub before posting and didn't find much...
Appreciate the help :)

Why is recycling so difficult?
I drink so little soda, etc. that normally I just toss used containers in the bin - my bad!
So I decided to be a good citizen, save them up and return them.
First stop: Ah Bos en Lommerweg - machine is broke
Second Stop: Dirk, also BnL Weg. Stand behind the smartly dressed lady dropping cans off. 73 cans and 5 minutes later... Its my turn, but machine only accepts cans - I get a piece of paper with a barcode worth €0,30 for my troubles and walk to the back of the shop to recycle bottles and plastic. Only the machine is broke.
Third Stop: Droppie, BnL plein. Much advertised by the Gemeente as The Solution to recycling. Only you need to download an app - which I can't since I dont have my phone with me, and even if I did it only accepts plastic and not glass.
Fourth Stop: Ah, BnL plein. Guess what? This one works, and I leave with another barcode worth €1,10.
So, 45 mins and over 2km of walking later I am €1,40 better off, but then only if I return to 2 different supermarkets and get shopping.
And they wonder why recycling rates are so low. Imagine if shopping for drinks was this difficult

e-bike and no cycling storage, what are my options?
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but I had once an e-bike / fat bike, but it got stolen in front of my apartment. Sadly, my apatment does not have a storage/box for bicycles. I was looking online and I was considering Tenways CGO600 which only weights 15kg so I could just carry that bicycle two stairs up my apartment. I was wondering does anyone in the same boat have any other good ideas?
I don't use my bicycle a lot but I don't feel comfortable leaving it outside day and night. I once it maybe once a week or less. I don't do a lot of traveling but it's nice to have it for being mobile being able to travel around.
Open to suggestions if anyone has any :)

How to pick people up by car after large concerts in Arena area?
My girlfriend got a free Weeknd ticket (in Johan Cruijff Arena) last week and went there alone. I came to pick her up by car after the concert. Welllll. I was coming from A2 via S111 road and I was planning to come to Kiss and Ride area behind the AFAS hall. The usual turns from S111 to the pickup area were closed off, and you could not park along the road either (obviously). Luckily while I was driving in circles (or rather standing in traffic jams) my gf came by managed to pick her up at the traffic light. So my question is whether this is even possible to properly and legally pick ppl up after the events in that area? Or it is just overall a bad idea?

NDSM neighborhood cleanup looking for (volunteer) co-organizers
I often see posts here about dirty streets and overflowing trash cans, so hoping there might be people willing to get involved 🤞
(Long time lurker, first time poster on behalf of the organizers since they're not on Reddit + we did have people come join a cleanup after finding out about it from a comment here!)
NDSM Cleans Up is looking for an organizer!
Pelle and Rens from NDSM Cleans Up are looking for someone to join the organizing team. Would you like to help keep NDSM clean while bringing neighbors together? Then we'd love to hear from you!
We're looking for someone with creative ideas and an interest in social media or promotion. No experience is required; just a passion for the neighborhood and a willingness to roll up your sleeves.
The time commitment is limited: just a few hours per month.
Interested? Or do you know the perfect neighbor for this role? Send me a message!

Looking for casual friendly futsal or soccer in Amsterdam
I used to play football regularly (twice a week) back in my home country and I’m looking to continue here in Amsterdam. I’m not a total beginner — decent fitness and ball skills — but I’m after casual, fun games rather than super competitive leagues.
Preferably futsal (indoor/small-sided) a few times a week, evenings or weekends. Open to good-quality pickup or organised casual sessions.
Any recommendations for active groups?

Can I borrow someone’s cat for a few nights?
I was gone for a few days of trip and now there are four dead mice and one (or more) alive ones in my room. There is already a few traps (the sticky ones) and the landlord filled the hole last time the mouse appeared. It was okay for like two months and now the first time I decide to go for a short trip this happened. I saw many people saying to lend a cat from someone but as long as I know there is nobody in the whole building who owns a cat 🥲
So I know it sounds crazy but can anyone help me out and lend me their gorgeous hunters just for a few night? I am experienced in having a cat for 10+ yrs in my country.

Does anyone have 10cm of blue and brown 6mm electrical cable spare? Trying to avoid spending €30 on 2 x 5m reels when I only need a few cm to wire in a new breaker. Let me know! I’m based near Westerpark and have beer money ready for you 💕
