❓ General Question Best Libre Office theme for Zorin Dark OS theme ?

I use Zorin Dark for my OS theme and struggle to find a theme for Libre Office where ALL menus will be properly displayed (as in, no black text on dark blue background).

Had any luck ? I'm getting desperate...

πŸ“Έ Desktop I came back to Linux, but embraced it harder this time

It’s been 5 years since I last tapped into Linux as a daily driver. The quirks of my workflow back then were now added in Linux, either through extensions or by app developers. Also, since it’s a gaming laptop (Asus TUF Gaming A15), I initially didn’t think much of its battery as good when I was at Windows. I usually idle at 18W using Windows but using Zorin, I even hit 6.7-6.9W min. (with 9 extensions running) and at 15-20W max., all while being close to the way how Windows works. From a previous 1 hour to 2 hour battery life duration, I get 4-6 hours now.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Unplugged headphones, now no analog audio output at all

I've been running Zorin OS since February alongside a Windows 11 laptop. I use a HDMI switch to share my monitor between devices. I unplugged my headphones from the analog jack (green) on my Zorin PC to use them with my monitor while gaming on Xbox. When I plugged them back into the PC, no sound. The only outputs I see in Settings are:

  • HDMI/DisplayPort (Renoir Radeon)
  • Digital Output (S/PDIF)

My headphones don't appear at all.

What I've tried so far:

  • Rebooted multiple times
  • Replugged headphones slowly, wiggled the jack
  • Installed EasyEffects (output list is empty)
  • Set default sink to alsa_output.pci-0000_08_00.6.iec958-stereo
  • Unmuted headphone channel with amixer -c 1 sset 'Headphone' 100% unmute
  • Ran speaker-test -c 2 -t sine -D hw:1,0 β†’ no sound, though test runs without errors
  • Installed alsa-tools and ran sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC1D0 0x14 SET_PIN_WIDGET_CONTROL 0xc0
  • Also tried node 0x1b with 0x40
  • Killed pipewire to test hardware directly

pactl list short sinks shows:

text

49 alsa_output.pci-0000_08_00.6.iec958-stereo
51 alsa_output.pci-0000_08_00.1.hdmi-stereo

cat /proc/asound/card1/codec#0 shows the headphone jack is detected:

text

Pin Default 0x02214020: [Jack] HP Out at Ext Front
Pin-ctls: 0xc0: OUT HP VREF_HIZ

The problem: The hardware detects the jack, but no audio reaches it. HDMI audio works fine.

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Linux 6.8+ Kernel Regression Breaking AMD Tonga & Polaris GPUs on Suspend (GCN 3.0 / Polaris) β€” Downstream Bug Confirmed, Needs Community Support

TL;DR: A verified regression in Kernel 6.8+ causes AMD Tonga (R9 380/380X) and Polaris (RX 400/500) GPUs to crash into a hard black screen when resuming from deep sleep/suspend. The bug is officially Confirmed on Ubuntu's Launchpad (assigned to maintainer Timo Aaltonen), but we need continuous community visibility to ensure this fix gets prioritized and doesn't push working hardware into becoming e-waste.

πŸ” What’s Happening?

When systems running Kernel 6.8+ (such as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS bases, Linux Mint 22, Pop!_OS, Zorin OS, etc.) attempt to resume from system suspend, the GPU fails to re-initialize the display engine (EDID read failures / NULL pointer dereference).

  • Behavior: Case fans and LEDs remain active, system keeps running in the background, but video output dies completely.
  • Workaround: Only a forced hard reboot restores video output.

πŸ› οΈ Why "Just Switch to Wayland" Isn't the Answer

A common suggestion when encountering display server issues is switching from X11 to Wayland. As a bench technician, I’ve tested this thoroughly on real hardware:

On Tonga and Polaris architectures, Wayland introduces a secondary critical failure: the compositor frequently freezes at the login/boot screen (blurred background with only the mouse cursor moving).

Trading a suspend crash for a boot freeze isn't a fix β€” we need a proper driver-level correction in the kernel.

⚠️ Why This Matters (Even If You Haven't Hit It Yet)

As distributions roll out Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack updates, more users running legacy AMD cards will inevitably land on Kernel 6.8+.

Voting on and confirming this bug isn't just about helping those currently affected; it's a preventative shield for the entire legacy AMD community to ensure perfectly functional GPUs remain usable on modern Linux.

πŸš€ How You Can Help (Takes 1 Minute):

If you own a dedicated AMD GPU (Tonga/Polaris series):

  1. Visit the official Launchpad bug tracker:Bug #2142389 on Launchpad
  2. Log in with your Launchpad/Ubuntu account.
  3. At the top left, under "This bug affects you?", click "Yes, this bug affects me".

If you don't own these cards, upvoting this post for visibility or dropping a comment helps keep the discussion alive so maintainers see the real-world demand. Let's keep functional hardware out of landfills! 🐧πŸ–₯️

πŸ”° Beginner Installing zorin just leads to a black text box

Hey guys I'm trying to install Linux for the first time. I've done the whole Flash drive thing but every time I hit the install zorin os button it takes me to a black screen that I can write text on but can't do anything. Idk what I'm doing wrong I've disabled the secure boot and added the little extra line that people say to do so if anyone has any ideas that would be great.

edit: Ok I didn't notice but now it says "Time out for waiting the udev queue being empty" at the top there

πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting Copying files taking forever.

So I will be honest there in a strong possibility that my old computer is just being old. So I started the process a day or so ago of copying all my files from a portable hard drive to a external 8tb hdd. I am getting a transfer rate, just below 1mb/s. I am just curious as to if there is some weird setting that is limiting it, or is in just old hardware coupled with a USB to USB connection. Thank in advance for any help and insight.

❓ General Question Looking for testers, translators and feedback for 1-Click Linux

Hi, I recently made an installer for ZorinOS that's meant to be extremely easy to use for Windows users. Somewhat deceptively called 1-Click Linux, it allows to reboot to a live/installer with no USB or external storage whatsoever, just a single EXE download and a few clicks. I reached out to Zorin Group if they wanted to cooperate on it, but still never heard back. Now I am looking for testers and translators, and public alpha feedback in general.

Want to help? This is a commercial libre software project, so I will certainly show material gratitude once it takes off.

EDIT: forgot to link 1clicklinux.org

πŸ”° Beginner Another Successful Conversion!

I installed Zorin OS on my father's laptop and he loves it! He couldn't believe the difference in RAM usage - 5.1GB vs 1.7. He sent me these screenshots and I couldn't believe how much RAM Windows 11 was using! Good grief! The laptop only has 8GB or RAM so Zorin definitely helps it to be more responsive. He appreciates the lack of adds everywhere and not being nagged to use Edge. He said it looks clean and uncluttered.

I made it dual boot in case he wanted to go back but I don't think he will. He was already using Libre Office. Other than that, he just uses it for surfing the web and playing solitaire. He isn't going to miss anything.

πŸ”° Beginner List of supported hardware

Post image

Hello,

I have an HP Omen laptop with that I have been trying to configure as a dual boot Win 11 / Linux laptop. The machine has both AMD Radeon 860M Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU cards. I have tried installing Zorin 18.1 and Linux Mint 22.3 without any luck. The installs seem to go fine until I reboot into linux. The screen goes black. On the Linux Mint installs if I edit the Grub (?) file and add nomodeset to the Linux line it will boot and I see the desktop. I haven't tried that with Zorin yet. Will it work? The attached picture shows the available updates. I have tried all of them and they don't work.

Is there someplace online I can check to see if Zorin or Linux Mint has drivers that will work or if my hybrid cards are supported? Thanks!

πŸ”° Beginner Thinking about fully migrating though not sure

So I just got Zorin OS to see what the hype about Linux is and tbh I'm impressed it's not giving me anything extra for my view(please Linux elitists don't come) BUT it is really clean and I am kinda THINKING about moving from dualboot to only Zorin BUT I use Xbox for gaming (sorry steam users I have failed you) well not all the time but yeah so I'm not sure and I wanted to get the Xbox app but I'm pretty sure you can't so I'm kinda torn

(I am a beginner I don't use arch btw and I only got it working today and I am dualbooting)

πŸ“Έ Desktop Split column in file manager?

I've gotten used to a function in other desktops like KDE and Cinnamon where you can use the file manager and hit f3 to split the window into two columns. That makes moving files by drag and drop much easier.

Is their any way to do this Zorin/gnome? I currently need to start a second instance of the file manager and place the windows side by side

I've been having this issue for like a week now and no solution helped me so far, when In a 1st person game or even in apps like Brave my cursor sometimes gets stuck on the middle of the screen then moves super delayed or jumps to a diffrent spot as if it was trying to drag the window, anyone knows a way to fix it?
