Zcash Shielded Assets: the most important upgrade nobody’s talking about

Post image
49 Upvotes

Most people still think of Zcash as “that privacy coin.”
What’s coming next turns it into something much bigger.

Zcash Shielded Assets (ZSAs) will let anyone issue new, fully private tokens directly on Zcash —
stablecoins, DAOs, RWAs, wrapped BTC — all of that, but shielded.

And here’s the part almost nobody outside the core community realizes:
Every single ZSA transaction will require ZEC for fees.
No matter what you build — a stablecoin, a tokenized bond, an in-game item — you’ll need ZEC to move it.

That flips ZEC’s economics overnight.
Right now ZEC is mostly used for transfers and storage.
With ZSAs live, it becomes the gas for an entire private DeFi layer.
ZEC stops being “a privacy coin” and starts being the fuel of private finance.

Imagine this:

• a USD-pegged stablecoin that stays 100% shielded
• DAOs where votes and holdings are private
• tokenized assets — stocks, art, real estate — traded with zero data leaks
• privacy-preserving BTC or ETH bridges in the future

All that consumes ZEC.
It’s like early Ethereum but with privacy baked in from the start.
Fixed supply, expanding utility — markets usually notice that after the price moves.

And barely anyone outside this subreddit even knows it’s coming.
ZSA work is already funded through community grants, it’s on testnet, and planned for the NU7 upgrade once audits are done.

Zcash was always the privacy layer crypto needs.
ZSAs make it the privacy layer the whole digital economy could run on.

If that’s not undervalued, I don’t know what is.

What is Zcash?

Zcash is a privacy preserving digital currency. It is the first blockchain to leverage a novel technology called Zero-knowledge proofs to enable privacy and selective transparency. Zero-knowledge proofs allow transactions to be verified without revealing the sender, receiver or transaction amount. Selective disclosure features within Zcash allow a user to share some transaction details, for purposes of compliance or audit.

Development work on Zcash began in 2013 by Johns Hopkins professor Matthew Green and some of his graduate students. The development was completed by the for-profit Zerocoin Electric Coin Company, LLC, led by Zooko Wilcox, a Colorado-based computer security specialist and cypherpunk. Over time, this company rebranded and converted to a non-profit org now known as the Electric Coin Company (ECC). Zcash development now occurs with support from ECC employees, the Zcash Foundation, and many community members through community elected funding streams that originate from ongoing Zcash mining rewards.

Is it possible to buy Zcash without kyc?

I've been digging for hours over internet and couldn't find any way to buy this dip without KYC, I do not wish to use any kyc anymore as purpose of crypto and because of my mexc account that got frozen over the "suspicious profits trading" because i made money off a new perps listing.

Please. if you have a way to do that tell me!

Why so quiet?

I’ve noticed less talk about Zcash on forums and in the news. Is this a good or bad sign for ZEC holders in your opinion?

Ursa Chat: Solving the metadata problem before quantum computers do. (Specs inside)

Hi everyone,

I am dbsc. To be honest, I didn’t spend months in an academic lab drafting this. The idea just hit me out of nowhere. I was so frustrated with the current state of "private" messengers that I immediately sat down to draft the core concept.

In the privacy space, almost everyone knows how to encrypt the content of a message. A very small percentage, however, knows how to protect the metadata.

I don’t think that’s because people don’t value absolute privacy. It’s because keeping metadata completely hidden while securing communications against future quantum threats is still too complex and missing from current everyday tools.

That observation led me to design Ursa Chat — a post-quantum anonymous messaging protocol designed to make communication as metadata-resistant and secure as a Zcash shielded transaction.

The Problem We Face Today:

  1. Metadata Leakage: Even with end-to-end encryption, global adversaries can monitor network patterns to identify who is talking to whom, when, and from where.
  2. "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later": Adversaries are actively intercepting and storing encrypted communications today, intending to decrypt them as soon as quantum computers become powerful enough.

What I Am Designing to Fix This:

Instead of relying on standard, predictable routing paths, Ursa Chat implements a multi-hop, geolocation-aware relay network.

  • Metadata Obfuscation: By routing packets through nodes based on dynamic geographic diversity, we break the correlation between sender and receiver.
  • Post-Quantum Security: The protocol integrates NIST-standardized PQC primitives (like Kyber and Dilithium) for handshakes, ensuring long-term, future-proof confidentiality.
  • Zcash Relay Incentive Layer: Nodes are automatically rewarded in shielded ZEC for providing network capacity. By building this as a modular Rust template, it can eventually be extracted as standalone crates for other Zcash-based decentralized services.
  • Rust Backend: The core framework is being developed in Rust for maximum performance, safety, and low-latency relaying.

Where I am right now:

I am currently in the specification phase. There is no production-ready code yet because I wanted to get the core architecture and math 100% right first.

I’ve posted my full concept and proposal on the Zcash Community Forum. I want you guys to look at it, find the weak spots, and tell me if this spark of inspiration actually holds up to hard crypto-analysis.

👉 Read the full proposal and join the discussion on the official forum:

Tear my architecture apart — I am here to make it bulletproof.

Just made your privacy.

Why can't I send my zec on zodl?

I have zec in my wallet but it says my spendable balance is 0 when I try to send.

Then prompts me to shield it to make it spendable but when I press to shield it just gives me an error.

Is there an easy resolution for this? I dont have much experience with zodl but never had a problem like this sending with other wallets.

I reported the issue but no response.

Thanks for any help.

I’m trying to find ways to shield my zec offline. I don’t trust keystone it’s based in CCP jurisdiction. I know ledger has planned integration for shielding, what do you guys think?

Guys. We’re so early.

Quantum is advancing, AI is advancing. Bitcoin is screwed you have no idea. The US govt recently signed an EO targeting a possible Quantum computer by 2028. Zcash is #1 layer 1 network on all of crypto with a prepared quantum layout. On top of this AI surveillance is advancing, the governments will continue with their outreach privacy is something that erodes over time, becomes scarce and most in demand. Bitcoin is fully transparent and will be destroyed. We’re already seeing taxes on Bitcoin transactions, EU banning privacy coins. AI algorithms will be used to track and trace everybody. CBDCs is also on the horizon. I honestly see Zcash top 1 coin years from now. I know it sounds crazy and retarded but when I study the fundamentals it makes absolute sense.

Zcash.

Any way to get dust out of my wallet?

Found a wallet that I used for mining ages ago which holds about 0.1 ZEC, but it's composed out of hundreds of tiny inputs. Trying to transact I receive "status=failed, error=Insufficient funds". My understanding is that this is caused by the anti-spam mechanism introduced in ZIP 317. Are balances composed of multiple dust inputs no longer usable whatsoever?

Why is Monero used wayyyyy more popular on the dark net compared to Zcash?

DISCLAIMER: NOT TRYIING TO TROLL/RAGE BAIT I AM GENIUNLEY CURIOUS.

I find the best way to know which coin offers better privacy is to analyze what criminals use to conduct business. After all if a criminals financial privacy and transactions are compromised that can be the difference between freedom and life in prison.

When analyzing popular market places for illegal goods and services, monero is by far the more popular method of payment. If you don't believe me access the dark web yourself check out 10 popular marketplaces for illegal transactions and you will see for yourself how monero is more popular.

Here's my question: Why is Monero the preferred method of payment if you guys argue Z cash is the better privacy coin? Are you saying that all these criminals are wrong? I am genuinely curious!

EDIT: Nobody has answered my question directly. I think this speaks for which coin is more private :).

mkpool does direct shielded coinbase payouts for solo ZEC mining

Hey r/zec,

Wanted to share something I've been working on. mkpool is a solo mining pool I launched recently, and I just got direct shielded coinbase payouts working for Zcash.

As far as I can tell, no other pool currently offers direct, fully non-custodial payouts straight to a unified or shielded address. If I'm wrong about that, please correct me, I'd honestly love to know who else is doing it. But for now it seems mkpool is the only one, and that felt worth putting in front of the people who'd actually care about it.

What that means in practice:

  • Block rewards go directly to your unified or shielded address
  • Fully non-custodial, the pool never holds your coins
  • Built for solo mining, so you keep the whole reward when you hit a block
  • Works with Bitaxe and similar gear

One honest note: Stratum V2 isn't ready yet. I'm still working on it and want it done properly rather than rushed, so it'll land when it's solid, if entirely possible for ZEC.

If privacy and self-custody are why you're on Zcash in the first place, this is built for you. Would genuinely appreciate feedback from this community, you're the people who'll spot anything I've missed.

Check it out: https://mkpool.com/

Thanks for reading.

Does it make sense to transact using Zcash (exchange goods/services for zcash) given its volatility?

If I pay 0.1 zcash for a coffee or for a YouTube subscription, then zcash drops 50% the next day, or shoots up in value, does this make sense?

Should we transact in zcash using a more stable USD-pegged version of it until the volatility of zcash’s value stabilizes?

Does this defeat the purpose of zcash? Will the value of 1 zcash ever stabilize? Is that even what we want?

$ZEC will lead the privacy era and the bull market when its begins.

Out of all my holdings, $ZEC is by far the best. Privacy is a must and I’m all in on $ZEC. This is just the beginning. Can’t wait for the Ironwood upgrade. (Slated for late July) as per sources. I will keep dry powder for the next $ZEC dip. These are generational opportunities to accumulate.

Trezor Suite transactions of transparent outputs unconfirmed 3 (almost 4) days later

It wasn’t just and still isn’t just the privacy pool that’s broken.

Transparent outputs stored on a Trezor are also unmovable. I have 4-5 different transparent outputs and none have moved. I used default fees for the first and ascending fees for the rest, even attempting a CPFP fee bump for one.

None have moved still.

I don’t see others mentioning this. I can prove it.

And I assume anyone else with funds in a Trezor can, too.

Any word on if a new Trezor Suite version or some other solution can get funds moving?
