Hi guys i'm interested on getting into whittling as a hobby and im looking for some guidance or some pointers cause idk where to get started. anyhting would help you guys all look like pros.

Fourth project. I was planning to do a flat edge to the spoon which I abandoned once I was cutting out the bowl so it ended with a weird shape.

This is the first complex shape/model I tried doing, got to the point where I would’ve had to start fixing the bowsprit and rig the yards to the masts and stopped as I wasn’t entirely sure how to continue.
I imagine I would have to use wood glue to attach everything, then comes the question of staining or painting.

Made a cover for my morakniv so she doesn’t sit in the plastic cover anymore

I am struggling with this hobby. I've seen a few youtube videos of simple whittling projects and they go through step by step like "Do the nose now, now the lips, now the eyes" but it never says HOW to do each cut. Like there must be some basic techniques to learn to help out with the cuts, something I am missing?

Also finding it hard to get appropriate wood where I live in Australia. We don't get Basswood here or anything like it. Any google or reddit searches I do always have the best carving woods in Australia that are quite a bit harder than basswood. I feel like struggling with crap grain in a hardwood isn't great for learning. Huon Pine is the most recommended but I cant source it anywhere.

A few months ago I decided to stop painting my pieces. I also had decided to stick with only one type of wood, making everything simpler and about just the knife work. My shelf begun to be filled with more and more monotone pieces. I did not expect I would miss the colours. I also did not expect I would be making very simple carvings, focusing more on form than on details. That might have been the trigger.

Those gnomes are actually what got me into carving. I dabbled with the idea for a couple of times during my life but it was after I saw a little wooden gnome on the internet that I decided to give whittling a go. In my mind the endgame was always to practice until I was able to make them, and then carve a billion of those. However during my carving journey I got sidetracked with improving my technique and with fleeting obsessions on other styles and designs, until a few weeks ago I carved a simple gnome, and then I carved ten more. They are fun, and I saw a way to make them even more fun by adding colour.

My favourite series is usually my next one, but there is something special about those gnomes. I'll try a classic straight pointy hat, clothes variations and maybe a slightly more detailed face/beard. Having them is as much fun as the making.

Are there any tutorials on how to whittle a smiley face.

It’s my second time wittling, the knife is sharpened and i don’t know why the block won’t cut, is it the grain direction because i can’t even tell what direction, it could be my cutting angle but i still think i should be able to cut off larger chunks then these tiny pieces, it’s taken like 4 hours to get a sube down to a cylinder because the pieces i shave off are so small

anyone here ever try using bark before? I was really pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to carve, and while I did a poor job preserving it to some degree, a beautiful grain with an almost walnut coloration. this is going to be a replacement wind catch for a windchime, so I kept going past some more consistent grain for the purposes of making it thinner/lighter, wasn't sure what I would encounter as I went deeper, but I'm still real pleased with the results. carved side finished with beeswax

Wanted to share my first ‘non-guided’ carve of a cat and its various stages. It’s my fourth little beginner project overall but the first time I just drew and carved from my own imagination rather than following a step by step online guide, as I couldn’t find something that fit what I wanted with the little piece of wood I had.

Thanks for all the little tips and tricks I’ve picked up reading all the fellow carve posts amongst the community here.

Next project is an anniversary love spoon so any tips, tricks or pattern inspiration would also be welcome!

Painted it orange and when the face was drawn on, it looked more like a fox haha. So here’s my fox-cat hybrid. Getting slowly better at whittling— sanded (very lazily) a project for the first time.

Followed peoples advice and tried to whittle a mushroom from memory to fight my.. for lack if words aphantasia art/whittle block.

Any feedback for the next mushroom?

Also is it better for my lack of ability to visualize things if I try and learn to carve/whittle without reference or do you think it's best if I use references?
