New, what is it? What is this in my son’s pretend boat?

I made this cardboard boat with my son a couple weeks ago. When he’s done using it, I put it in a storage space in our basement on a shelf. He used it almost every day for a few weeks then stopped asking for it until this morning. When I took it down this thing is in the corner, initially I thought it was frost/ice but after my husband absolutely rubbed his hand in it to check (he shouldn’t have 💀) we realized it is not ice. It feels rough and dry. We’ve already told our son he gotta throw it out I’m assuming it’s some weird crystallization of something. He’s 3 and wasn’t very happy about throwing it :(. What could it be????

well, he definitely christened that vessel.

Thank goodness he didn’t have time to find the poop deck

The proper term for a toilet on a boat is called The Head

Oh, I hated the Colonel with his wee beady eyes, and that smug look on his face. 'Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken!‘.

A new meaning to "giving head" now

Don’t think so because as someone else mentioned I would’ve definitely seen the wet spot when putting it away after every time he was done playing with it 😭😭 but honestly good guess

Do you have a cat? Looks like a cat pissed there

36

u/Doodlemombxtch 2h ago

I don’t have a cat😭 I do have a recently potty trained 3 year old though 🤣

8

u/mmwhatchasaiyan 1h ago

I’d like to think that if your son peed in it, you would’ve noticed that you were putting away a wet, urine soaked box? Unless your 3yo son has access to your basement storage, peed in the box, and put it back up…?

5

u/Doodlemombxtch 1h ago

You are so right. I would have noticed it was wet for sure before returning it. And no way he would’ve been sitting in it long enough to dry :/ so good point. Son pee is unlikely

2

u/mmwhatchasaiyan 1h ago

If I were you, I’d check the basement for critter entry points. I lived in a house next to a large nature preserve, and I was always surprised at what could make its way into my basement. Stray cats will seek out shelter from bad weather, etc and if your basement is accessible enough, it’s a good possibility that’s what happened.

u/TerrapinStateofMind 1h ago

Made me think of this for no reason but it's funny so here

1

u/Careless-Hotel-2401 1h ago

It’s gotta be milk! I bet he had a sippy cup that leaked a little or maybe just had some in his mouth and drooled it lol and it could have dried by the time you moved it but milk will crystallize like that and if it’s a small amount probably wouldn’t have a smell

7

u/DragonflyOnFire 2h ago

I have a cat that loves to piss in open boxes... we have to keep our boxes closed or this will absolutely happen.

7

u/mmwhatchasaiyan 2h ago

Cat piss also crystallizes when left to dry and the spray pattern also on brand with cat piss. Surprised there wasn’t a horrible ammonia type smell to give it away?

1

u/PickButtkins 2h ago

Cardboard has a pretty amazing ability to soak up cat piss. I use a layer of shredded cardboard under the litter in our cat's box of shame (litter box) to hide the stank.

1

u/KnifeKnut 2h ago

I find this to be more plausible than the son peeing there.

35

u/Tight-Platypus5231 2h ago

It appears a diluted liquid has dripped into the cardboard. Almost looks like a small hard water deposit. There's not a leak in your basement, is there?

12

u/cuck__everlasting 2h ago

There's a leak in the basement.

6

u/Tight-Platypus5231 2h ago

Leak found in basement.

Hmm will have to check 😫

Thank God he's 3. I was scared we were witnessing the birth of the box 2.0.

I'm sorry, the what?!

3

The box. It's kind of legendary.

You found the head.

3

u/Ok_Commission_5629 2h ago

His imaginary friend. Also, it’s not polite to point at them

4

u/jcflyingblade 2h ago

In nautical parlance that part of the ship is called ‘the head’…

3

u/NullaCogenta 2h ago

From the speckling pattern, I'd agree with those suggesting mold. Get your son a new, larger box that will make him forget about the old one. And keep an eye on your husband for signs of CBI.

3

u/gargoyrl 2h ago

Looks like a liquid with some minerals in it dripped on it for a time and left splatters.

6

u/tedwolf183 2h ago

This looks like some kind of rot caused by fungus. If the box has been damp at some point and in a poorly vented space it can result in spores to grow.

2

u/cuck__everlasting 2h ago

Check your plumbing for leaks, unless you have nightmarishly hard water this is likely from something waste side. Dripping kitchen drain hopefully.

2

u/ASimpleMoroon 2h ago

I thought you were pointing at the thing that looks like an eight ball I was so confused.

2

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G 2h ago

Calcified piss. Homie need to see the dr

3

u/Wide_Ad_8209 2h ago

It looks like Mold and/or a mineral deposit. Do you live in a humid area?

1

u/WaterBear9244 2h ago

Looks like dried salt water

1

u/molitovbear 2h ago

That is candle wax that dripped on the box from somewhere.

1

u/OgRgOd710 4m ago

This...this is what it is.

1

u/chronicreloader37 2h ago

Looks like the box had jugs of chlorine at some point and it leaked. I had a pool growing up and the leaks looked similar to this when we bought cases of chlorine.

1

u/LuckyLuckierLuckest 2h ago

Looks like condensation from a pipe in your basement storage tripped into your child's boat.

1

u/DaGrimReefer91 2h ago

Looks like salt. If the first comment is right and he pissed there it's time to take him to the ER ASAP to get checked for kidney stones. Otherwise I dunno wtf it could be but I doubt it's actually kidney stones. Speaking from experience here unfortunately... they suck and I've never pissed out pure minerals. 🫪

1

u/Vintage-Grievance 2h ago

It doesn't have to be kidney stones; cardboard is porous, so when it gets wet, it doesn't take long for mold spores to settle in.

1

u/CuriousREALFactsNOW 2h ago

Everybody on reddit should know what this is the start of.

Don’t look up cum box, please. Just don’t.

1

u/MushroomLover32167 2h ago

Corner of peepee at least there's no poopeey

1

u/dickenschewie54 2h ago

If you have a cat... it's cat pee

1

u/Akuno- 2h ago

Probably mold.

1

u/No-Jicama3012 2h ago

Were there any pipes above where it was on the shelf?

1

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G 2h ago

When you’re stuck at sea sometimes you need a lil sump pump

Cat pee or rodent pee. That’s what it looks like to me.

1

u/Doodlemombxtch 2h ago

I don’t have a cat so 🐀🐀🐀😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖???

1

u/ericroku 2h ago

His boat spring a leak. Probably from drugs or butt stuff.

1

u/lizzzy2407 2h ago

It almost looks crystallized from the picture. Could it be dried salt water?

1

u/UrBoundtopleaseme 2h ago

Sugary spill , that looks like a very sugary substance

1

u/NeatChip4597 2h ago

Why is suddam hussein in there gang

u/Noothus 2h ago

1

u/Schlippo 2h ago

It's pee.

1

u/haktirfaktir 2h ago

Remains of a salty pickle maybe

1

u/Final-Guitar-3936 2h ago

Looks like he peed there.

1

u/apeocalypyic 2h ago

Guys wake up, mom found the bullseye

1

u/AllSeeingRedditor 2h ago

Looks like something dripped on it. You should flush or run water and check the basement for leaks lol

1

u/HourHoneydew5788 2h ago

Do you have a cat? It looks like cat sprayed

1

u/RigatoniMadMax 2h ago

You don't happen to have a Himalayan salt lamp on the shelf above it, do you? In hot/humid weather ive seen them melt and leave similar residue.

But maybe he stopped asking for it bc he peed in it 👀

1

u/Cpdk 2h ago

Could it be that rotten fruit was there? A rotten orange for example.

1

u/WorldlinessFun226 2h ago

That is the oil stain from a powdered donut.

1

u/Artemus_Hackwell 2h ago

That’s the poop deck. Also likely the urine deck.

1

u/ParagonChariot 2h ago

I love the CIA level investigation going on over some kid peeing in a cardboard box.

1

u/Colorspots 2h ago

It looks a bit like when I had a candle on a table and the wax started dripping on the floor without me noticing it for a while.

1

u/gr_rn 2h ago

Did he hit an iceberg? 🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/-Eightch- 1h ago

That looks like it's from a broken egg that leaked from the carton.

1

Why did you ask on Reddit? It's sperm.

It’s from a vape.

u/unseamingcarrot 1h ago

1

u/Foreign_Stretch_6235 1h ago

It’s super consistent so if he peed , he did so with the steady hand of a surgeon. Could be a drip from above

1

u/MajikMark1 1h ago

And very possibly some kind of a salt deposit!?

1

u/izza123 59m ago

If it melts at 133c it’s urea

1

u/Affectionate_Will976 23m ago

Something could have dripped in it in storage. The splatter makes me believe it was something that holds a high concentration of minerals. AC? Other simple leak?

I believe that it doesn't really matter what it is. If mom and dad decide the boat is not sea worthy anymore, then so be it.

Come up with a cool story on what happened to the boat (it was in a storm and now there is a hole in it, a boat with a hole is not a very good boat) and how ya'll can make an even better boat this time.

Get crafty, let the kid paint the boat or glue colorful paper on it.

Make an anchor out of cardboard, tie it to the boat with a rope and let him sail to new adventures!

And if you simply lack a big box, I'm sure a trip to the local hardware store is both a fun outing and they surely have some very decent replacements for his boat with a hole in it. ;)

u/Patient_Carrot_9379 2h ago

That’s real box, otherwise you would’ve be able to see it
