G-man: "Burp I dunno man, what stupid question is that?! Give it like, legs and beak and... I dunno. Burp Morty! We need to get out of here!"
Angel: "Legs and beak? You sure? Are you okay G-man?"

That's an African Jacana which is not what's pictured in the video posted, but there are other bird species who will pull up their chicks and carry them under their wings like the Jacana.

u/wumptickler 15h ago edited 15h ago
It's real. Those extra legs are babies hiding in the adults feathers.
Edit: African Jacana

Great way to leg train the little ones.
Makes sense, that terrain does not look forgiving if you're not walking right away... The way they mock walk not only looks creepy but it helps them figure out their funky swamp chicken walk.

What's funny to me is yes, it has three eyes, but also, it has eyelids.

I was going to ask you where the third eye was but then I realised you meant the gif, not the bird.
5
45
u/NeonMutt 15h ago
Okay, when you know that, the pattern of their movement makes sense. At first it looked like a bunch of random twitching. Now I see that momās legs are the two in the back, and the babies are under her wings, facing backwards. Man, that really did look like AI, though
29

u/King_Bobby-B 12h ago
That's the dad. Mom has a harem of dads, and the dads take care of the kids.

u/RedstoneRiderYT 12h ago
It's actually a Bronze-winged Jacana, the African Jacana has basically the opposite head colours (white head with black stripe by the eye)
26
u/midasMIRV 14h ago
Seeing the photographer get out of the water covered in fine silt and muck, I understand why the bird has those feet.
But I still don't fucking like it.

One chick/adolescent under each wing, walking backwards. Probably getting cuddles/protection from a parent, and being a little too big for it.
I thought I had it rough as a kid/teen, but I never had to walk backwards with my eyes covered while in a headlock. Guess I can't complain. /S

Bronze-Winged Jacana. Not African. The photographer seems to be Indian, and there's no dearth of wild subjects in India so the likelihood of it being a Bronze-Winged is more

So I looked it up and yeah, apparently these lovecrafian horrors are actually real and really do this. The only complaint I have to make is that these are not African Jacana. To the best of my knowledge, it seems to be a Bronze-winged Jacana

6 legs means 3 birds
113
u/rustyroo2021 15h ago edited 14h ago
So none of the legs are its legs? Or maybe there's just 2 chicks and 2 legs are the father's?
Edit: I'm an idiot and its late, I'm in the hospital so cut me some reddit slack š I read it as 3 chicks not 3 birds which is why I asked a dumb question š
118
u/-epi- 14h ago
Yeah, once they have babies, the father's legs fall off and the babies do all the walking for it.
29
u/HabitNegative3137 14h ago
Just as nature intended
15
u/rustyroo2021 14h ago
Right?! Like he's got babies now to carry him, why does he need legs? Put those little shits to work!
4
u/Emixii 10h ago edited 10h ago
What if those babies have babies while their parent is still alive? Is that how pyramids are built?
5
u/rustyroo2021 10h ago
Maybe they turn into like bird centipedes š just a family bird chain you don't fuck with!
3

Lol I know you're joking but that's a neat fantasy creature idea. I was going to say Pokemon, but IDK if the "carried around by it's young" thing fits the Pokemon universe well or not.

Well this is cool as shit. I hate that we are in this weird era where we have to question everything. I knew it was going to happen and still donāt know how I feel about it all.
8
u/serpiccio 11h ago
imo learning to question everything they see online might be one of the few good changes that the younger generations have ahead of them

u/SpannerFrew 10h ago
Well before that it was photoshop and even further back there have been plenty of hoaxes and faked UFO or bigfoot stuff efc. I guess it's easier to do now though.

u/Head-Ad-5732 14h ago
The wiki:
"The jacana has evolved a highly unusual polyandrous mating system, meaning that one female mates with multiple males and the male alone cares for the chicks."

This one is definitely 2 separate videos stitched together . The woman is just posing with the lens. I donāt see any rain drops around her. Also to take a moving video of a bird with that telephoto lens you need a tripod/gimbal. It would be very difficult to just use your hands to stabilize the video. The second part of the video of the birds seems legit
2
u/Scrolldawg 13h ago
