What is a competitive file?

The most common misconception among members of this sub appears to be that extracurriculars are the key to differentiating your application. Truth is, that only counts for 10% of your total score, with your athletic leadership being another 10%. Your coursework counts as much as both of those combined, and your SAT/ACT/CLT scores count for twice what your coursework does.

While the median SAT/ACT are in the 1320/29 range, those numbers are skewed by principal nominees from less competitive districts, soldiers, and recruited athletes, who don't have to beat you out for a slot, they just need to qualify. For candidates who aren't in those categories, you don't see a lot of offers going to those whose scores are below 1370/32. That's not to say that you can't get an offer without those scores, but those who do without a principal nomination are in a small minority. See "Judging your Chances" for more on principal nominations. Since most congressional offices nationwide select the principal nominee based on whole candidate score, that probably puts you back in having to crush your test scores to get an offer.

If your test scores are in the range described above, you're in pretty good shape and don't need to be extraordinary in your leadership or CFA performance. If your test scores are lacking, you'll probably need to excel at extracurriculars, athletic leadership, AND your CFA performance to make up a significant shortfall in academics.

That's not to say that athletics aren't important. West Point is by far the most physically challenging of the three major service academies. About 98% of each class participated in varsity athletics. To be clear, we're talking about sports and not varsity band or theatre. Candidates without sports on their resume need to do well on the CFA to alleviate concerns about their athleticism and general fitness. Even if your academics and leadership are stellar, your file is likely to be a topic of discussion by the admissions board if your physical performance is lacking.

Parents' Guide To West Point

As we approach R-Day and the class of 2030 fills up, this is probably a good time to share the Parents' Guide to West Point. The "Dad's Guide" title on the document is tongue in cheek and is explained in the Preface. Hope people find it useful!

Keep Chasing Test Scores or Shift Focus to crosstown Army ROTC?

I just got my July ACT score back, and I improved from a 28 to a 30 composite (28 math, 32 english, 31 reading).
For context:
-Community college applicant with a 4.0 GPA after my freshman year
-HS GPA was a 3.2
-CFA is in the average tier but competitive for sure. Probably going to retake
-Not a lot of STEM courses freshman year
-This upcoming year (sophmore year) I'll be taking calculus and physics.

My question is, at this point, where would you focus your effort?

Would you:

  1. Continue grinding for a 32+ ACT to strengthen my application and continue to make up for high school grades
  2. OR
  3. Shift more of my time toward a crosstown Army ROTC opportunity at a nearby university for the fall semester, which will improve my application and show my commitment. I know both are valuable, but time is limited, espescially with a busy course laod this fall, and I'm trying to invest my time to what will have the biggest impact on getting an appoitment.

30 is a 94th percentile score, and I have no military background or family. Not sure if those details matter but just thought I'd share.

Can tearing an ACL as a sophomore ruin my chances of getting in?

I may have injured my knee recently, and I know West Point is very picky about medical things, so do you think something like an ACL tear would be enough for me to not be admitted?

Chances (Class of 2031)

First, I want to apologize because I am sure these posts are extremely annoying to get every day. But I'm kind of stressed about getting in. Also, if I don't, I'll be back next year, I am not giving up.

1340 SAT (720 English, 620 Math) --- I am retaking this in August. This Math is not good enough, I am aware.

29 ACT (Math was too low so I am focusing on SAT)

AP US History -- 5 (Probably not that important)

4-year Varsity Wrestling + 2 year team captain (will be)

2 Years National Honor Society, Elected Secretary of the Chapter

I've taken (DE=Dual Enrollment): DE Pre-Calculus, AP US History, All Honors Math/English/History

I'm taking: DE Biology, DE Calculus/Geo, AP Chemistry, AP Language and Composition, Economics/AP Government

I've got multiple weights classes in there too if that will help at all.

I'm working on my CFA, and I just got contacted about DODMERBs.

My main worry is 100% my CFA and lack of leadership. If you can offer assurance and/or tips, I would really appreciate this. Again, If I don't get in, I will next year. Or the next year.

What is your ‘why’?

With a son (HS freshman) who is interested in applying to a service academy and is beginning to weigh the differences between each, I’m curious what your “why” is/was in applying and entering your particular service academy? For the purpose of this post, I’m looking at just Air Force Academy, Westpoint and the Naval Academy.

My guess is that for some it is simply the honor of serving our country, but maybe you picked a particular school for specific interest or future job training? I know tradition, the strong network post-graduation, or even appreciating the no-cost, but strong academics….I’d love to hear. Please be honest!

Thank you!

Help With Application

Is their anyone I could get on a zoom call with just to meet for around and hour with help on my application ? I just need some extra guidance on the bits and pieces and I think it would be easier via a live conversation on zoom or a call. I would hire an academy consultant but money is a bit tight at the moment with my family. Thank you for your help and time !

Feel free to message me or email @[email protected]

tunnels to towers 5k?

Do the cadets get the weekend off for the 5k? I heard that last year and years prior the cadets got a pass for the weekend as long as they were at the run by 5am Sunday. I heard that some people booked airbnbs for Friday/Saturday night. Is this guaranteed? can I meet up with a cadet in nyc during that weekend?

Letter Of Assurance Interview Requirement?

Hello.

Essentially, I am in another country with a 13 hour time zone difference from the U.S until July 28th. My field force representative has been contacting me to get most of my application in early for consideration for a Letter Of Assurance. Naturally, she asked to complete an interview before August. I explained my situation, and she has asked to do a virtual interview. However, I'm concerned that any interview while I'm in another nation will not bring out the best version of me, as I will most likely have to wake up in the middle of the night or stay awake until the interview, and therefore might not be presenting myself to the best of my abilities.

Is it absolutely necessary to complete my interview before August, should I give up on a Letter Of Assurance, or should I just do the virtual interview?

I have submitted my SAT score (1570), grades (3.8UW), and all 3 of my teachers have completed the SOE's.

Thank you.

Admission vs citizenship

My son is in high school, class of 2028. He wants to attend west point, but the main issue we have is that we are not yet US citizen. We need to wait 5 years after getting our green card, which bring us to January 2028 + whatever time needed to get citizenship (usually takes around 6 month if things go well).

Timing is tight!

Has anyone been in this situation? We can start the Naturalization application 90 days prior to Green card 5 year anniversary, which put us in October 2027... so if the process to get citizenship takes 6 months that's ok to get citizenship prior to 1st day of school.

Main question is the application : Do we need citizenship to get the nomination?

What would be your advices, for the ones who understand the situation.

Could a foreign citizen be admitted to West Point if he/she was a child of Medal of Honor winner.

If so, would this include citizens from unfriendly countries.

Hi everyone! I’m a rising senior (female) and applying to WP class of 2031. I’d like to know how strong my application is and what should be worked on.

Published writing 5 times (once commissioned, twice for national literary magazines)

CFA: Took it at SLE and got average. Retaking in Nov. for above average/excellent score.

How are my chances?

Hi everyone! Im applying to usma, usna, and usafa as class of 2031. I am going into my senior year and am started to get stressed about my application, I feel good about my academics but like I’m lacking on leadership. I haven’t taken the cfa yet but I expect to get an average score (I’m female if it matters). Here are my stats, I’d appreciate any comments or advice on where to improve.

4.56 weighted gpa, 3.9 uw
1490 sat, 750 math
10 aps
4 years varsity volleyball 1 as captain and all-conf hm, 6+ years of club volleyball at a national level
2 yrs jv tennis, 1 year varsity
Nhs member
Founded+ board of physics club at my school
Key club member 4yrs
I coach a special olympics volleyball team
Nominated by my vb coach and athletic director for student-athletic leadership council
Model UN 3yrs
Quizbowl co-captain 2yrs
Run senior sisterhood program

Also, would it be worth it to invest time in improving my SAT? I think I could definitely do better as I haven’t really studied for it, but I’m not sure if my time would be better spent investing in other parts of my application. Thank you for any advice!

Walking Privileges Boundary

Extended family of a plebe - our home lies within the North / South/ East / West 20 mile walking Privileges Boundary description but we're JUST outside the 20 mile radius map. Are there other types of leave where they would be allowed to visit? At what point in their West Point years might they be allowed to visit? We were looking forward to providing some support and bummed to find we may be beyond the boundary.

Current 11B in the NG, Chances?

Current 11B E4 in the NG. My stats are as follows: Strong LoRs from English Professor, PSG, PL, CO and BC. Cum 3.91 gpa with 61 credits towards BS in Finance, combat deployment, nominations for both parents (100% disabled and career Army officer). Deans List at my university, PTK Honor Society, volunteer as a little league umpire, Sunday school teacher, and church security team. Manager at a collision repair center. My HS gpa was bad around a 2.5 and my SAT was a 1210 +600 in both sections. I have yet to take the CFA so considering this information what scores should I shoot for in the CFA? And what are my chances for USMAPS?
