Ever since I was a kid watching Floyd “knock out” the 500lb Big Show in WWE I have had an odd fascination w brass knuckles vs the modern , practical options.

As you grow up you are told brass knuckles will just break your hand , SAP gloves are better , etc. I’ve even been in a high school dispute with a much smaller person who grazed my chin with them to literally no effect. Now , hypothetically let’s say someone who’s trained boxing or striking uses them , knowing how to punch and understanding placement is better than throwing as hard as they can. Jabs , check hooks etc . How effective are they in that scenario ? Or are knuckles just a holly wood thing.

I was gifted a 96 cm (38”) swordfish bill and decided to make one of my friends a graduation gift. Apparently he loves swords. It took 3 years (of procrastinating) but I made a sword with a koa handle and the shadow box out of Monkeypod and velvet. I used coconut coir rope and chicken feathers to attach the hand shield. (This was traditionally used to prevent blood from making the sword slippery). I messed up on the shadow box because the velvet isn’t perfectly flat but turned out mean. My friend was super stoked.

The end all be all of human history. It all began with sticks. How did humanity dominate tougher combatants? Sharp sticks, make it better? Sharp rocks on sticks. Stick too short? Make way to throw sharp stick. Sticks are amazing.

I used mountain goat horn for the scales, shaping them to fit naturally in the palm. I debated adding the top spike for a while, but I finally went with it. Was it the right call? What do you think?
