How hard is to use one spot

VIRGINIA BEACH — Sandbridge Road, a two-lane winding thoroughfare with ditches on each side, is the only way to Sandbridge Beach. Every time it has closed over the years — for a wreck or a flood or a downed power line — thousands of residents and visitors have had no way in or out.

Emergency vehicles can access the area through Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex. Residents can as well under certain circumstances, but that requires a surge of naval security and Virginia Beach police officers to control the route.

A push to build a new road to Sandbridge is nothing new, but it’s gaining momentum again following two recent accidents that shut down the road. City and Navy officials are urging an expedited environmental review of alternative route.

“It’s a safety concern,” said Elaine Fekete, president of the Sandbridge Beach Civic League. She’s lived in Sandbridge since 1995 and says road closures have increased in recent years.

A new road

A reliable alternative would slice through the northern part of Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, which concerns environmental groups about potential effects on birds and other animals.

The project would extend Nimmo Parkway 1.9 miles between Albuquerque Drive in the Lago Mar neighborhood to an improved section of Sandbridge Road via a city-owned right-of-way. A 800-foot bridge would be built over Ashville Bridge Creek in the refuge. Nimmo Parkway Phase VII-B would include a two-lane undivided roadway with shoulders, bike lanes and a shared-use path.

Extending Nimmo Parkway would have minimal effects on private property, requiring no business or residential relocations, according to the city and the Virginia Department of Transportation. It also has fewer impacts to wetlands and streams than redesigning roughly 3.4 miles of Sandbridge Road, which is bordered by homes, businesses, cemeteries, a church and the refuge.

The extension would tie into a recently improved 1-mile section of the east end of Sandbridge Road, which was completed last fall. Those improvements included straightening and elevating the road as well as adding 12-foot-wide travel lanes, new on-road bike lanes, a 10-foot-wide shared-use path, a widened shoulder, new reflective pavement markings, LED street lighting and pedestrian lighting.

Hi! Husband and I are looking at going to Virginia Beach for a small baby moon in early August. Depending on when we go I’ll be around 6-7 months pregnant. Trying to figure out which is the best resort. We are ultimately looking for relaxation, a nice pool, and easy beach access. We’ve narrowed it down to Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront and Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront Resort. Any advice that might help us make a decision would be very helpful!

In town for the weekend with friends and wondering where the best places to go would be even if I'm by myself.

How do you all feel about flock cameras? I’ve heard people say, “Shouldn’t be an issue if you have nothing to hide.” Personally, I think that’s a slippery slope. There’s been numerous incidents now of illegal searches by authorities in other states (looking up ex lovers, journalists, and whoever). In 2025, two people discovered 67 cameras streaming live that had no password protection and no login needed, which some of them even pointed towards playgrounds (once again not here or in this state). There has been people who have been falsely accused of crimes because of flock linking them. There had been cities who have terminated their contracts with them and flock has continued to keep the cameras up. Virginia Beach seems to be slowly obtaining them, I saw another one get put up today.

So it’s probably apparent what my initial view on this is, but what is yours? Is it something out of our control? My main concern is how easy it is for people to access these cameras, but maybe this is just the world we’re living in now. I’m free to opening my mind and just having a peaceful discussion, not a debate with anyone.

Are Jellyfish present at Virginia Beach this season?

There are a lot of Jellyfish at Buckroe right now. My son and I were both stung and were looking for another swimming spot. Any advice appreciated. He is autistic, loves the ocean but not the jellyfish.

UPDATE: Yes, the Jellyfish are here. More in the warm water of the Chesapeake than at the Atlantic Virginia Beach area.

No, not people, but the butchered trees on Providence Rd. Dominion subbed out "tree maintenance" to some real clowns who hacked the trees mercilessly. Why would they even think the resulting Bozo cuts were the right way to landscape? It makes the whole area look like a shit hole. Just cut the poor things down and put up a border wall or something less ugly. The shitification of West VABeach rolls on. Lets not even talk about Indian River Rd between the interstate and Military.

I am an officer in a reunion committee for a ship I served on in the 1970's. We have a reunion every year. We go to a different city each year. This coming year we will be in Virginia Beach in May.

We have a memorial service to remember our shipmates who have passed in the last year, as well as the shipmates on one of our ships (there were five) who lost their lives when the ship was sunk in Guadalcanal during World War II.

During the service, we try to have a Color Guard and a bugler (for taps, etc.). We have found our bugler, but for some reason are having trouble getting a commitment for a color guard so far.
