i paid 15 euros for this at a charity shop, they didnt have the cables/pedal so i got a discount. im new to sewing, is this a good machine?

I love quilting and sewing. Found a singer 66 with a table listed for $50, paint is a little faded but the person says it sews well.

Is this a decent deal?

May be a bit of a long shot, but I was looking at this old family blanket and noticed this one character in the fabric. The blanket is made from scraps it seems, so this is the most complete image of it. But maybe somebody here will recognize who it is?

I found these in my mom's sewing kit that she gifted me. How old are they? Should I still be using them?

I received this suggestion recently, and thought I’d share it here in case it can help someone else.

When trying to estimate the value of a vintage sewing machine, and comparing prices online, remember to look at what buyers are actually paying, not the prices sellers are hoping to get.

If you check on eBay, for example, search for a machine similar to yours (same maker and model, ideally) and make sure to use the “Sold Items” filter. This will show you the prices that similar machines have actually sold for, what people is really willing to pay. It will give you a much more realistic idea of the "market value".

It’s a simple tip, but it can prevent a lot of confusion when trying to figure out what a vintage sewing machine is really worth!

Also, a few things to keep in mind when comparing.

Consider the condition of the machine: if it's working, complete of all parts, with or without accessories, the overall appearance...

Look at where the sale took place: prices can vary a lot depending on the country or region.

Hello! I have never sewn by machine before, so I’m hoping for some advice on whether this is a good machine for a beginner, and if the repairs it requires are able to be done by myself?

I recently picked up a Singer 306w from marketplace. It mostly runs fine except for when the needle is in the leftmost position, where it comes up too quickly for the hook to catch the thread. I watched and read a couple tutorials online, since the manual does not mention how to go about this. However, all the machines I’ve seen had apparent screws that can be loosened to detach the hook. I cannot seem to find those screws on this machine. Any help is appreciated

I am new to vintage sewing machine.

I have this vintage sewing machine it's called vogue stitch, it works well but I feel that I haven't reach its full potential because I don't know exactly it's functions, for example it has a stretch stitches option but I don't know how to use it, does anyone has its manual?

Found this barely used manual in a sewing bundle I purchased from an estate sale. Anyone in here want it? Will only charge shipping if you're extra far from me (I'm in Memphis TN).

Recently purchased a 247 in original case. My mom has had the same machine all my life. This thing is HEAVY. The original case is cracked and pieces keep breaking off, which i expected with old plastic. But mom said she's on her third regular plastic case in as many decades. Plastic just doesn't seem up to travel from more than the closet to the desk. I am considering a rolling case but wanted to see if anyone had any regular carry case recommendations.

As I was thinking today that I definitely need to thin the heard, I came across this 301 listed as “doesn’t work, has been a good table” on marketplace. The wires were toast but after some cleaning/oiling, I took my 401a wires and plugged it in. It is just a lovely machine and I don’t need it but certainly I couldn’t say no to a $25 chance that paid off and the free dopamine from the thrill of finding a gem.
I need to not keep it though…

I refurbished a New Home Model 30! I bought this one to wind bobbins for a treadle New Home I had, and it came shipped to me with zero packaging. It only survived because much to my surprise, it was made of aluminum. It probably only weighs 15 lbs! I call it my cheap Featherweight, except instead of a .4 amp motor, it's got a big ole .9 amp motor, so if you put the pedal to the metal, it will vibrate itself off the table lol. It's very robust for its size. My guess is it's from the 1920s because it was made in Orange, MA, and I think New Home left Orange in the late 20's.

Work that was done (and concessions that were made):

• I wanted to use the original motor, but it was dirty as hell and I couldn't get it apart, so I ended up replacing the motor.
• Complete rewire with a vintage pedal I had around, as I couldn't figure out how to get apart the old one. The hardware is original, however. I love that you plug it into the back of the box!
• I cleaned the machine, then decided to do a full refurbishment by stripping the old shellac. That took off a lot of the grime and gunk--enough that it changed colors. However, I couldn't remove the shellac over the decals without removing them entirely (as you'll see, this happened with the stripes), so unfortunately the shellac around the decals is original (and grimey). I covered it with a new layer of shellac, so it is still clean.
• Sanded and reshellaced the case, and then commissioned a leatherworker on Reddit for a new handle.
• Polished all the metal, from inside the machine to the hardware on the case to the best of my ability. Those blank faceplates are hard to do, especially with all the little bumps and bits, so it's not going to be a mirror finish, but I've come to peace with it.
• Replaced the lightbulb. That's the only wiring that's original; I hate taking those lamps apart and the wiring looked fine, so I let it be.
• In a perfect world I would have stripped the whole thing, replicated the decals, painted it a fun non-gray color, and put the decals back on, but I got other machines to work on.

In the end, it sews great, even if its light weight makes it bounce around a bit when you really get going. This one was waaay more work than it should have been for a machine I only bought to wind bobbins, but it was a nice surprise finding it was so light! If you find one in the wild and don't want to pay Featherweight prices, consider grabbing it!

Hello! I’m looking for some advice!! I am getting married in June of 2027. I’m hoping to wear my mom’s old wedding dress, but I have a couple of concerns! Honestly, I’d REALLY just love and appreciate any and all advice that can be given! Admittedly, I feel incredibly in over my head with this!

1. The bustle attachment has broken off. My mom is also worried that the fabric is old, not well stored, and isn’t going to be sturdy enough on my wedding day.
   
2. I don’t think I’d adjust the height, but there is a potential for the back needing to be taken out some.
   
3. Any guesses at all for how much something like this would cost? (Granted I don’t even know the “this” I’m referring to! Like I said — in over my head!) If this will cost more than buying a new dress, it might be worth it to not proceed. :(
   
4. The big hurdle is size. I’m a solid 50lbs heavier than my mom was when she got married. Granted, I have been heavily dieting (and am doing really well!), but I’m still worried this just might not be possible. I was hoping to put this off until December, to see if it even is a possibility, but would that even give enough time?
   
5. Going back to time… I feel like I need to be talking to a seamstress (or someone else???) now! Does anyone have any recommendations in the Indianapolis/Richmond/Dayton/Cincinnati/Columbus area? Generally, anywhere within a 2 hour drive of Dayton I’m willing to go to!

No text markings anywhere on it

An incredibly moving and sad documentary about the Singer factory in Clydebank, Scotland. At one point the factory made 80% of the world’s sewing machines, but no longer exists. All that remains now is the Singer train station.

This is my Mother's Singer 241C, it has been passed down in my family for at least 3 generations (was gifted to my mom by her great-grandmother).

Quite a while back it stopped turning on, my mom replaced the power cord and that did not resolve the issue, and due to health issues, the machine had sat in unuse for about a year, She's now interested in attempting to repair it again and is asking for my assistance.

I'm quite unsure as to where to start, coming from automotive troubleshooting.

I was thinking of purchasing a multimeter to verify that the wiring is functional and hopefully it's just a motor replacement. and while I'm there, was gonna verify and double-check the oil levels.

my questions.

1) is this a sound strategy?

2) if it ends up being the motor, what kind of replacement motor should i order?

3) is there anything I should keep an eye out for while troubleshooting and cleaning this unit?

4) any other repairs/replacements/modifications I should do for my mother while I'm here?

Okay so I’ve been seeing a fair number or vintage machines pop up in my area on Marketplace- I currently have a newer (not sure how new, it’s secondhand) super basic singer traditions machine.

This machine and I are always butting heads- constant issues with thread tension even after following all the tutorials/tips I can find. It’s making me not even want to sew anymore.

I want a machine that can handle piecing quilts, some basic clothes making, and some small projects like stuffed animals on occasion. Something simple to use, that is reliable and consistent.

Any suggestions on what to look out for?
