is this gonna part of the pattinson universe? I don’t understand why they have all these villain spinoffs.

as Cool as Batman is, it's his Villains i feel that really help him shine as a character. due to how interesting and well written many of them are.

His rogues gallery absolutely does so much of the heavy lifting but I still feel like alone it becomes formulaic and stale. We already know what’s going to happen and without the catharsis of seeing them get corrected by a hero, it feels empty.

Marvel’s done it too with venom, where one movie is enough if not too much of an intro and sequel without spiderman is unneccessary.

Penguin was enjoyable as well, but without seeing the Dark Knight at least once it felt like it was set in a different world where Batman just didn’t exist.

This is one area where the movie format just doesn't work as well as comics. In comics, it is common for side characters and villains to get their own runs, sometimes multiple reoccurring runs, and many of the individual comics in said run are usually self contained to the perspective of said character. Some of these have lead to the best comics of all time and lead to these supporting characters to become main characters. Good examples are Wolverine, Deadpool, The Punisher, Catwoman, Supergirl, Nightwing, and many others.

But movies are massive financial investments that require the audience to really invest around 2 hours and expect a complete arch. That just doesn't work for this kind of thing. Cartoons like the DCAU could do this, maybe TV could pull it off if they consistently invested in regular interconnected output, but each of these movies always fells less than the sum of their parts because you expect a movie to be more self contained and complete while in the back of your head you know this isn't the main show.

The older I get the more I think movies should be movies, comics should be comics, and video games should be video games and we should stop trying to make everything a multimillion dollar movie.

If the villains, of any story, are not compelling then why would we care when the heroes beat them? Good heroes require good villains.

I disagree with the absolute nature of this. It entirely depends on what the story is about. Sometomes villains aren't the story or journey, they're more there for the sake of it.

No, it’s part of the DCU, where Gunn’s Superman is.

silly considering he’s a Batman villain, are they planning for an entirely different Batman in the current DCU?

u/Th35h4d0w 1h ago

That's the plan, yeah. The Batman Epic Crime Saga is considered an Elseworld.

To be fair the thing DC does best is the villains. All the Villain movies hit and the heros don't ( minus batman)

That's because batman is the only inherently interesting dc superhero. Everyone else is too one dimensional and/or too overpowered and writers and casting directors for dc movies have usually struggled to overcome that.

Villains aren't necessarily less one dimensional, but it's easier to make a villain more complex by making them relatable than it is to make a hero more complex by giving them flaws.

I don't know if Marvel heroes are more interesting, or if marvels just figured out the formula to make heroes interesting, but I suppose they had a similar problem before the MCU where only spiderman and xmen were successful because those characters are complex/flawed enough to be easy to turn into feature length stars.

The issue is that most of the DC’s classic line up are proto heroes closer to gods in a pantheon.

But shows like Young Justice & Batman Beyond and have proven that they can take the symbols and make more relatable stories while trying to weave their stories together.

Marvel started with the advantage that DC was kickin around for a while and intelligently decided they wanted to create a universe of superheroes that live alongside each other.

I mean, it’s pretty obvious. The Joker standalone did well at the box office. So studio executives, in their infinite creativity, thought ‘well let’s just do that for all the DC villains!’

Except that’s not what this is at all. This is part of the new DC universe.

Not are there other DC villain movies coming out.

u/Blueguerilla 38m ago

It doesn’t matter what ‘universe’ it’s in. The formula of stand alone villain stories is tried and tested at this point, so Hollywood keeps churning them out.

batman is honestly a boring and bland character who for some reason despite a potential for an interesting backstory usually just has it glossed over or flat out not seem to matter

he literally survives for being "cool"

compare that to a character like the joker who through a lot of the most popular iterations by far usually carries the movies or is dramatically more interesting, two face is pretty much very much the same, ice man

the bad guys are just always more compelling in the batman series, it's largely just been a very odd quirk that for whatever reason over the years the batman villains get more fleshed out/become more memorable

i guess part of it is because batman's kind of basic vibe is like...

"my parents were murdered so I left to become a ninja assassin but none of it really mattered because I'm very rich and I get really advanced tech compared to most of the bad guys I fight so let's never talk about my past because it's not that deep"

I think part of that is also, if you tried to inject Bruce with a bunch of charisma or character or 'director's vision' at this point then you'd have fans losing it, whatever you tried to do.

The way he doesn't dominate the dramatic/charismatic energy is important to the dynamic between logical batman and eccentric Gotham bedlamites. I don't mean it as bad as it's going to come out, but he's kind of meant to be a broody, edgey self-insert character too, if he has too much personality of it's own then it's harder for readers (on a business, selling comics scale) to project onto the hero, selling a power fantasy is pretty much what the whole superhero industry is.

u/mapletree23 24m ago

yeah a big part of it is like you seem to be implying and like I said is that his entire "character" is usually just... brushed off

you either get the charismatic bruce or the broody batman, never really both, and the movies especially have constantly been talk about how an actor fit one part and not the other

clooney and bale were great bruces, very mediocre to poor batman etc

it just feels like his backstory is also so shallow that even if you go out of your way to try and talk about it in one movie, it immediately becomes irrelevant in the next because there's just not enough really there to actually carry a character

out of all the popular superheroes be it DC or marvel, he definitely seems to have the weakest origin story to go off of, and it's gotten to the point where being rich is his super power, but unlike tony stark there's not really much else there because the character has always seemingly lacked depth

i'm not saying batman sucks or it isn't awesome and I haven't basically loved all iterations, it was more just this guy was asking why are they doing DC villain movies and to me it's pretty obvious it's because a lot of them are frankly more interesting than batman

i'd of dug a batman universe probably where they had these villain spin offs and looped them into an avengers style batman timeline where he starts fighting against them all but sadly they missed that boat well into superhero fatigue and all
