I mean I agree with your overall sentiment, but Americans (edit: I should specify, the ones in government) have always been pretty pro war crime lol. At least when its them/their allies doing it.
•
u/MLGSwaglord1738 1h ago
There was a Guardian article, and another critique from a professor at the University of Sydney, that said Trump is the most American President in its history (narcissistic, embodies shallowness of US popular culture like reality TV, embodies long history of nativism, unapologetic ambition, etc).
I think a lot of people are still in denial that Trump is a consequence of our culture; would someone with his personality and record have any chance of winning an election in Taiwan for example?

GENEVA – Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel said in a new report today. The Commission urges Israel and all States to fulfil their legal obligations under international law to end the genocide and punish those responsible for it.
https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/06/1167790
Israeli authorities and security forces have deliberately targeted Palestinian children, resulting in genocide and atrocity crimes in the Gaza Strip and war crimes in the West Bank, a UN independent commission of inquiry said in its latest report released on Tuesday.
https://www.btselem.org/publications/202507_our_genocide
Israeli human-rights NGO, BTselem: Statements by senior Israeli officials and actions on the ground prove beyond any doubt that, in Israel’s eyes, the entire population of the Gaza Strip is the target ... That is precisely the definition of genocide.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cde3eyzdr63o
The world's leading association of genocide scholars has declared that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
A resolution passed by the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) states that Israel's conduct meets the legal definition as laid out in the UN convention on genocide.
Amnesty International investigation concludes Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza
https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/12/19/israels-crime-extermination-acts-genocide-gaza
In the 179-page report, “Extermination and Acts of Genocide: Israel Deliberately Depriving Palestinians in Gaza of Water,” Human Rights Watch found that Israeli authorities have intentionally deprived Palestinians in Gaza of access to safe water for drinking and sanitation needed for basic human survival.
What our medical teams have witnessed on the ground throughout this conflict is consistent with the descriptions provided by an increasing number of legal experts and organizations concluding that genocide is taking place in Gaza,

Question from outside the US. Mamdani can't ever become US president right? For being born in Uganda?
•

Btw just to be clear: being born outside the country isn’t necessarily disqualifying. You have to be not born a citizen. If your parents are American you can be born anywhere and still be president.

Not because he was born in Uganda, but because he was born in Uganda to parents who weren’t us citizens when he was. Had they been he would be eligible to be president.

•
•

The account that posted this is Iranian. It is quite literally a propaganda post.
I know you think propaganda is ok when it supports your side, but it is still bad.
•
u/jaron_b 49m ago
So you don't think Netanyahu is a war criminal? Interesting take that I definitely disagree with. I also take you didn't bother reading my other comments explaining why this isn't propaganda because he is in fact a war criminal and propaganda is inherently spreading misinformation. So what misinformation is being pushed? He is a war criminal and he is coming to the United States and I think it's right for a US politician to call for the federal government to step in and do what needs to be done because he is a war criminal. I don't know why this is up for debate and I don't care that the message is being pushed by bots. Netanyahu is a war criminal.

7
u/jaron_b 2h ago
It would be more appropriate than" since I literally didn't say that. But to answer the question that isn't being asked. This is just like no ethical consumption under capitalism. If there are going to be bots on the internet which I can't stop I would at least like the bots to post things that I want to see on the internet rather than continuously being bombarded with propaganda that is clearly propaganda. Which if your counter to this argument is that this video is just different propaganda I would call BS on that. This is a political message being made by a person in political office and you can disagree with the political statement that's being made but it's not propaganda so it being pushed by bots less annoying than when propaganda is being shoved down my throat because of bots. Hope that clears things up. Can't wait to see what straws you grasp at next.
→ More replies (8)4
u/pr0tag 2h ago
You said:
“Push this agenda.”
Then later you said:
“This is a political message… it’s not propaganda.”
Those two statements don’t fit together.
Political messaging intended to persuade people is, by definition, advancing an agenda. Whether it also qualifies as propaganda depends on the methods used, not whether you personally agree with the message.
Then you wrote:
“If there are going to be bots on the internet which I can’t stop I would at least like the bots to post things that I want to see.”
That’s a perfectly fair personal preference. But it’s also an admission that you’re okay with coordinated amplification when it benefits your side. That’s very different from arguing the amplification itself is acceptable as a general principle.
Finally, you say:
“If your counter to this argument is that this video is just different propaganda I would call BS on that.”
Simply calling it BS isn’t an argument. Every political campaign, advocacy group, government, activist movement, and elected official produces persuasive messaging. The question isn’t whether it’s political (it obviously is!). The question is whether it’s being used to shape public opinion.
That’s what agendas do, and that’s exactly what propaganda is designed to do.
So the real distinction you’re making isn’t between agenda and propaganda.
It’s between messaging you agree with and messaging you don’t.
In other words, the distinction you’re making is between propaganda you agree with and propaganda you don’t.
-1
u/jaron_b 2h ago
Political propaganda in its most simplistic terms is a political message that is factually innocent. So the only way you can think this is political propaganda is if you think Netanyahu isn't a war criminal. Which if that's what you believe I need not waste anymore time arguing with you. Keep grand standing and getting mad at the wrong thing. I'm just glad that one American politician has the courage to say the right thing and if the use of bots is the only way to get this message heard as I said before. Necessary evil and no ethical consumption under capitalism.

Because Netanyahu is visiting NYC and Mamdani has previously said he would arrest him if he came to the city. However, after looking into it, he is actually unable to arrest him under US law. So he is making a public statement so he doesn't appear to be backing down or changing his views.
And in my opinion, it should be the president of the United States that is unwilling to host a war criminal in the country, it shouldn't fall on the mayor of a city.

u/in_it_to_lose_it 2h ago
From the video's description on YT:
"The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu for a reason. He should be arrested and stand trial.
My administration examined every legal avenue available to determine whether New York City could execute that warrant. The law is clear: we do not have that authority. The federal government does.
So we are calling on the United States to uphold international law, cooperate with the ICC, apprehend Benjamin Netanyahu and transfer him to The Hague to face justice.
We cannot end this genocide on our own. But we can use every tool available to defend humanity and uphold justice.
That is the responsibility of this city. And it is my commitment as mayor."
He is doing what he can within the restraints of the law. Which to be fair isn't much. But it's a hell of a lot more than most US politicians are doing.

I think it’s hilarious the number of people screaming “damage control!!!” after Mamdanis has already done so much for NYC. TBH I think this whole situation was more embarassing for Mandani than anyone else.
A mayor does not have the right to arrest a foreign head of state. Doubly so if it is someone visiting for a UN meeting. Everyone already knows this.
All he had to say was "I want to, but I can't". Instead, he put his foot in his mouth and made himself look like a dope.

Already sick of every Jew I know complaining about this, claiming he's endangering the safety of Jews in NY.
To all American Jews, you want to know why anti-Semitism is growing? It's because you show more concern for your own safety than you do for other victims of genocide. It's because you refuse to denounce Palestine's Hitler.

3
u/Ky1arStern 1h ago
Israel pushed into Gaza and set up a buffer zone. They razed a lot of shit and did stuff that a lot of people condemned.
That I can get behind. You can't really blame a country that was attacked from securing its border, and the terrorists who use civilian targets as shields are way more to blame for a lot of the collateral damage. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, so Israel does what it needs to do.
The part where we sort of lose the plot is that they kept going. They stopped setting up a buffer zone and started, "clearing" the area of people.
I'm not against a country defending it's borders, and few countries arenas beleaguered as Israel. But at a certain point, I think you have a responsibility to hold back.
The situation in the middle east is old and complex and has a lot of external actors. But if you ever want it to change, at a certain point someone has to extend the olive branch. Israel made their point and showed how far they could go if they were so inclined. That should have been enough.
Eradicating the Palestinian population is not going to stop terrorist attacks against Israel, it's not going to stop anti-semetisim, it just gives more fuel to the fire.
Israel could be a bastion of morality in this conflict, but their government chose not too, and it's not wrong to condemn that.
I'm gonna get like 12 comments about how Israel shouldn't show mercy to a population that cheered Oct 7th. Well they cheered Oct 7th because they think Israel is the fucking devil, and Israel is just perpetuating the cycle by making them look right.

Not all American Jews are like this. There are Jews against Zionism all over the US, just like there are Christians against the war in Iran.
It's important in times like this to be specific about what we are criticizing. It's not Jewish people. It is Zionists that believe the Israel-Palestine conflict to be so intractable that they support the genocide. As such, antisemitism (which is also a word that would describe hate of other Semites like Palestinians btw) is still unjustified hatred. Not all Jews feel this way, and many would choose understanding and mutual flourishing but are not in a position to affect the situation.
Paint with the brush you mean to. Anti-semitism is on the rise because of lazy thinking that paints entire groups of people with a single brush, when really we need to criticize a line of thinking.

u/Swansonisms 1h ago
The textbook definition of genocide is laid out in Article II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. It means:
"Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."
You have no evidence of intent
Evidence of Intent

“It is an entire nation who are responsible...and we will fight until we break their backs.” -Yitzhak Herzog. President of Israel

“Only an explosion that shakes the Middle East will restore this country’s dignity, strength and security! It’s time to kiss doomsday. Shooting powerful missiles without limit. Not flattening a neighbourhood. Crushing and flattening Gaza. ... without mercy! without mercy!” - Knesset and Likud member Revital “Tally” Gotliv

“We have to be cruel now, and not to think too much about the hostages. It’s time for action.” - Bezalel Smotrich (again)
“We cannot have women and children getting close to the border... anyone who gets near must get a bullet [in the head],” Ben-Gvir, Minister of National Security
“I am personally proud of the ruins of Gaza and every baby, even 80 years from now, will tell their grandchildren what the Jews did,” May Golan (again)
“Gaza won’t return to what it was before. We will eliminate everything.” Yoav Gallant (again)
“one goal: Nakba! A Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of [1948]. Nakba in Gaza and Nakba to anyone who dares to join” Ariel Kallner, member of Likud party
“Gaza Strip should be flattened, and for all of them there is but one sentence, and that is death.” Yitzhak Kroizer
“There will be no electricity and no water (in Gaza), there will only be destruction. You wanted hell, you will get hell” Major General Ghassan Alian, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories
“Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist”. He added “Creating a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a necessary means to achieving the goal.” IDF Major general Giora Eiland
“There is one and only solution, which is to completely destroy Gaza before invading it. I mean destruction like what happened in Dresden and Hiroshima, without nuclear weapons” former Knesset member Moshe Feiglin

Ugh. I am totally onboard and agree with Mamdani. I am a full supporter. But this is just going to give more fuel all the idiots who already think he is an antisemitic terrorist.
Like, he can never be bothered to condemn Hamas at the same time... Just say "netanyahu should be arrested for war crimes, just like any Hamas leader". Why??
Fuck Israel. Fuck netanyahu. Fuck hamas. Fuck trump. I love Mamdani but I wish he would see how he comes off to all the insane zionists when he only condemns Israel.
