What's the point of these sessions if you dont have to answer any questions?

776

u/Chief_HungLikeHorse 19h ago edited 29m ago

This is what bothers me so much about these sessions. The senator was asking pointed and direct questions only to receive some idiotic non-answer, and then responds to Hegseth's drivel* with "let's move on."

No man, let's not move on. I understand that there's time constraints, but he didn't answer the question and you just... let him? Hold them accountable and make them squirm in their seats.

334

u/CypherAZ 18h ago

In a functioning government the senate would remove him, but the GOP don’t believe in a functioning government.

120

u/MelangeBot 18h ago

In a functioning democracy the people would be on strike and outside to protest like in Ukraine when their president fired the wrong person.

But the citizens of the USA have become so complacent that now they are rapidly losing all their freedoms and autonomy and the power to self-determinate and they do not even recognize the process of losing it.

Canada beware or they will fall as well.

85

u/CypherAZ 17h ago

It’s not really natural complacency, it’s engineered complacency. Tying healthcare to having a job will go down as one of the greatest tactical victories for the oligarchs.

21

u/eDxp 12h ago

Ah yeah. The land of the most free slaves in the world. Exporting democracy left and right. Truly a sight to behold.

24

u/chacogrizz 16h ago

In a functioning democracy the people would be on strike and outside to protest like in Ukraine when their president fired the wrong person.

In a functioning democracy sure. This isn't a functioning democracy as the fucking comment you replied to says. We have a pedophile in charge, that tells you all you need to know. We had his supporters storm our capitol because he incited them to. He has made billions of dollars from being corrupt during his presidency. No amount of strike or protest is going to hurt him. And if it ever gets to that point the pos isnt opposed to using force to get his way.

The only reason strikes and protests work for Ukraine is because Zelensky is an actual leader who cares about his country and their people. That is not what is happening in the US.

Not just Canada. Social media is global and destroying the minds and democracy of many countries.

3

u/Zouden 11h ago

I wish more people talked about how social media is at the root of our problems.

Some countries are banning it for under 16s. It's a good start but it's not going far enough.

6

u/MelangeBot 17h ago

Yes but Canada is so close to the US and so well integrated that it has the highest risk of falling.

Hate to break it to you that Americans are largely brainwashed yesmen who happily contort themselves to stay in line with what their party tells them to believe, and it's been like this for a long time.

4

u/RoboFrmChronoTrigger 17h ago

Have you ever been at a job where like 1 or 2 people do all the actual work? That is to say, 1 or 2 people take responsibility for the work not being done, while the rest of the employees just clock in and collect a paycheck? Its bliss for the people who do nothing, and the people who actually feel the weight of the responsibility bear all the criticism and inevitably give up really trying to fix things.

Because that doesn't work either? Watch this, https://youtu.be/7Kbh4UJPhSk?is=kRgPmJYlUMliHO-E

Senator Ossoff tried to get Hegseth to admit to being clearly wrong about an assessment of the war months ago. Because if Hegseth was so wrong then, why trust him now? But Ossoff doesn't get a straight answer to a direct question and ends up using most of his time doing this back and forth. Their time is limited and they have other points they'd like to make.

24

u/Concerned_Collins 17h ago

And Ossoff not giving up showed much more effectively how much of a liar Hegseth is, and how the Trump administration completely lied to the American people about how the war is going.

20

u/MyOwnSpiritJesus 16h ago

We all know they’re liars. Where has that gotten us?

6

u/BortleNeck 16h ago

Good men can only do so much, eventually we need American voters to have some minimal standard for their representatives other than 'red tribe win'

Got a 3-day automod ban for "endorsing violence" by quoting his "maximum lethality" bullshit, didn't get overturned when I petitioned it.

It would be super duper cool if our elected reps had more concern than Reddit automod.

185

u/frontfrontdowndown 20h ago

I got the same for criticizing ice violence

30

u/AmityMayorVaughn 10h ago

I got a Reddit warning for saying the White house was burned down in 1812 in response to their invasion of British North America. A historical event, in a historical subreddit.

Whoever is running Reddit now has an agenda.

83

u/LaurenMille 19h ago

There's a reason spez was called out as a fascist like a decade ago.

It's not like he's changed his mind.

49

u/HealthyMaximum 16h ago

Remember really early on when spez was caught editing other people's comments that said negative things about him or the site?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

18

u/AVeryVapidBadger 15h ago

Didn't he also mod jailbait when that sub was a thing

8

u/Meatslinger 14h ago

In the interests of fairness and accuracy, apparently that was back during a time when you could just add anyone's username to the mod list and they became a mod. It was done as a joke, not by spez himself.

10

u/AVeryVapidBadger 14h ago

Yeah but I do remember him not wanting to ban the sub until like attracted media attention

14

u/SporesM0ldsandFungus 19h ago

Like getting reprimanded or fired for quoting Charlie Kirk.

7

u/sheikahstealth 19h ago

Centuries of bans probably have been handed out from quoting Trump and his lackeys.

21

u/Dirty_Dragons 21h ago

There are no human admins.

24

u/IsReadingIt 20h ago

There are, they just take forever to review appeals. I've been falsely banned for 3 days and 7 days. The 7-day ban they overturned around day 4. The 3-day ban they overturned around day 60 (yes, 8 weeks after the ban had expired). They held in my favor both times, but that doesn't do me any good.

6

u/HealthyMaximum 16h ago

I got a warning for a comment 18 days after I made it.

Which was 17 days after it was deleted.

The warning didn't explain what the issue with the comment was.

... and I couldn't even go back and look over it with a critical eye, because the comment had been deleted.

... if you wrote that sequence of events in a sitcom about a tech company, it would be cut before filming for being too dumb and unbelievable.

10

u/Dirty_Dragons 20h ago

I've never had a ban appealed successfully regardless of how ridiculous the reason for banning was. My last 3 day ban was asinine and no human would believe that it was justified, and it was still denied.

5

u/robby_synclair 17h ago

The new ai bans are wild. I said something anti Israel and got a three day ban for attacking marginalized people.

And then they just kept doing it over and over again? War crimes. Each time.

9

u/Successful-Web6033 17h ago

Just straight up murder actually. Those boats had nothing to do with any “war” as far as I know.

It wouldn't be so bad if he just had to answer the questions asked of him. Like that's the part of all this that I can't believe; people can get called in front of Congress and just... not answer the questions. The fuck is the point of it, then?

It should be at least as serious as any regular ass trial. If you don't answer the questions honestly, you get your ass held in contempt, and sent to jail.

49

u/Merijeek2 20h ago

I always hear it's to get them on record so that such things can be used for campaign commercials and prosecutions.

They, of course, are not used for those things.

So...good question. What's the fucking point?

38

u/PresentRaspberry6814 20h ago

We watched Trump live on TV stoke the insurrection and violent takeover of the US Capitol. If watching him commit his crimes live on TV changed anything he would be rotting in prison ten years or more ago.

5

u/t00oldforthis 19h ago

Keep us busy and keep them rich.

13

u/Fart2Collect 19h ago

The purpose is to put them before the American people and the people can do with that information what they will.

Many people have questions about this war and it's on the representatives to ask those questions. They can't make them answer satisfactorily.

If these appointees don't answer satisfactorily then it's on the people to vote accordingly, so we'll see.

In fact, both chambers of Congress have a power known as inherent contempt. That means exactly what you describe - they can arrest and detain a witness found to be in contempt of Congress. They have not used this power since the early 20th century, though. Witnesses might think twice about being evasive and disrespectful if they did use it.

4

u/XxHANZO 18h ago

Trump would just pardon anyone who was charged with contempt, then go on a tirade whipping up his base and getting the Republican replaced with a more pitiful sycophant.

19

u/redvelvetcake42 21h ago

It's the braggarts conundrum. The thing you bragged about has become the thing showing that you're either lying or were provably wrong. Hegseth is not smart, is a bootlicker and only says what benefits him in the immediacy.

Ah yes the gross negligence of the Biden administration, who expanded NATO and didn’t attack Iran

316

u/boot2skull 21h ago edited 21h ago

A funny thing my cousin did, who works in military intelligence, made some boomer fb post (at the start of the war) about beware of Iranian sleeper cell activity because Biden let them in. Not that Trump started an unnecessary war, not that they know of some presumed threat on the populace and went to war anyway, not that they could have come during Trump’s terms or even Obama’s. If he’s what our intelligence community is made of then forsake all hope.

He was literally preemptively shifting blame on Biden for any possible actions of sleeper cell terrorists.

Seeing how easy it is for a nation like Ukraine to get Russian conscripts to post a bunch of intel to telegram, including videos of them traveling to the front, through the lines - the state of our intelligence branches is really concerning.

Must be nice for some other national governments though. I can't imagine a more desirable domestic political situation for US adversaries.

they don't hire them for their college education. many of them also primarily worship a president who has made many public statements insulting the military. who draft dodged, and is one of the biggest karens in the world. somehow they find some masculinity in the guy. but mostly, and same with maga, is that they've all been brainwashed to actually think democrats are demons. so their saying about voting russian over a democrat is true, they'd even vote for an actual real life piece of human poop - so long was it wasn't a democrat (and they did lol)

3

u/LickNipMcSkip 19h ago

There's definitely a bit of selection bias for the kind of people that still post their thoughts to Facebook in the big 26. You read the thoughts and responses of intel bubbas here on Reddit and you'd probably see the exact opposite sentiments. The reality is that the military, like all large organizations, is a microcosm of the wider US population and their views and actions usually just reflect that.

The prisons used as state sponsored slave labor and often cited as human rights violations as the guards and staff often abuse inmates (and inmates abuse and assault each other too)

Some useful terminology:

Kakistocracy: Government by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. It is a system driven by incompetence, where leaders are chosen for reasons other than merit, such as nepotism or blind loyalty.

Plutocracy: Government by the wealthy. In this system, power is concentrated in the hands of the richest individuals, meaning policies are heavily influenced or determined by wealth rather than the will of the majority.

Kleptocracy: Government by thieves. Leaders use their power to steal their nation's wealth and resources, often embezzling state funds and funneling public money into personal bank accounts.

"Yes so we need to establish STRENGTH POSTURE by improving our END STRENGTH numbers". This guy is a fucking clown. Sounds like a middle schooler pretending to be the Secretary of Defense

u/MavisBeacons_Sextape 16h ago

Sounds just like me when I’m working on something else in a meeting, camera off, and suddenly I’m put on the spot to “weigh in” - and just string together some plausible enough buzzwords. The difference is that I could genuinely give a valid answer if I’d been paying attention, because I’m not grossly unqualified for my job.

14

u/Up_All_Nite 21h ago

B B Bu But Biden!

14

u/NCM2018 21h ago

I’m so sick of hearing about Biden every time these guys get caught in a lie

3

u/Kakazam 12h ago

It's honestly brutal. Absolutely any answer behind with Biden this, Biden that. Absolutely zero accountability.

28

u/Lukinzz 21h ago

Say Biden one more time. I dare you.

49

u/TheMooseIsBlue 21h ago

I know she has more points/questions, but it annoys me that he responds to her questions with non-sequitors and then she just keeps saying “I’m gonna move on.” That makes his non-answers stand as though he made decent points. She should hammer him on them.

“You said we decimated their missile program but they’re still firing. How’s that?”
“Of course they still have missiles, but not as many as they used to.”
“THEN WHY DID YOU SAY WE DECIMATED THEIR MISSILE PROGRAM? WERE YOU LYING UNDER OATH THEN OR LYING UNDER OATH TODAY?

6

u/Crabapple_Snaps 19h ago

I don't see it that way. With every question not answered but moved on it is as if to say you failed the last question, now here is a new one.

12

u/TheMooseIsBlue 19h ago

If he’s not told that is a lie or non-answer and just asked a new question, that legitimizes the response. Say it’s a lie and why it’s a lie and THEN ask a new question. Don’t be coy and assume the audience got it. The audience is dumb as rocks.

Moving on is “as if to say you failed the last question…” Then why not say, “You failed the last question”?

I either lied or I was wrong and I'll admit neither!

u/dangerousluck 21h ago

Looks like he’s in especially heavy makeup to cover for an obvious hangover, or like, I guess he’s in a perpetual hangover these days.

6

u/UX-Edu 21h ago

Can’t get a hangover if you never stop drinking.

5

u/Trixles 19h ago

As a recovering alcoholic, please allow me to disabuse you of that notion lol xD

I'd feel bad for him if he wasn't such a complete piece of shit.

3

u/Rock_Strongo 18h ago

Same day hangovers are the worst. Yeah you can drink your way through them but you never really get to the other side. You're just delaying the inevitable.

My favorite thing about Trump voters is that they're so brutally and shamelessly insulted by the people they vote for. They're too fucking stupid to pick up on it though.

6

u/solod15 21h ago

It’s a reality TV show so the answers don’t need to make sense.

11

u/davidjschloss 20h ago

biden. biden. biden. Everything is fucking Biden.

Why does the National Guard in DC count as an Iranian War emergency?

Biden.

Why did you spend to recruit when you had too many people?

Biden

The problem with these hearings is that she says to him "why did you say it was functionally destroyed if you need money to destroy them" and he gives a bullshit reply and she says "let's move on..."

Don't fucking move on. Ask him again. And again. And again. And again.

He's fucking kicking the can till her time runs out. And instead of making one soundbite-worthy, realistic point over and over, she just touches each one lightly, goes "okay" and moves on.

Nothing irritates me more than loser politicians who do t answer questions directly.

A close second is the politician asking the question not calling them out repeatedly for doing so.

5

u/GhostalMedia 21h ago

I see he’s doing the ‘ol “answer the question you wish they asked you, not the question they actually asked you.”

The telltale sign of a slimy politician or a used car salesman.

6

u/k6tcher 21h ago

I stopped watching when he said 'Biden.' That's not a reason to request additional funding. He might as well as said "I'm a piece of shit and just need more money for the lol's."

4

u/and8713 21h ago

This man is the textbook definition of incompetent. The senators who went along to confirm his nomination need to be held accountable. They knew this guy was way over his head, and were now seeing the consequences of it.

5

u/Glonos 20h ago

When does the “Biden shit, gimme more dough” excuse will run dry?

All due respect to her, but Murray's not really up to the task of going toe to toe with Hegseth's misdirections. She's too used to dealing with people speaking in good faith and seems like she might be too nice for the job.

5

u/elciano1 20h ago

The bluster and the macho man bullshit doesnt destroy military capabilities. These idiots think they are on a scripted reality show.

6

u/desperaterobots 19h ago

It took him five seconds to blame Biden.

3

u/sdmichael 19h ago

They're physically incapable of accepting responsibility. It is a huge sign they're incapable of governing. Governing requires taking responsibility regardless of who is at fault.

4

Good questions but ineffective questioning. He replies with some bullshit and she just accepts the BS and moves on.

3

u/LandrosRadick 20h ago

Pete sounds like a High Schooler who is sweating under the no bullshit gaze of a teacher who is using his own previous work against them.

4

u/randomvictum 20h ago

Trump hasn't done shit for the military. Full stop.

4

u/HanYoloKesselPun 20h ago

This was shit tier pressing. That woman should be ashamed lol. All right I’ll move on. Christ. You Americans need better politicians and journalists.

Recruiting numbers are NOT up because Trump is amazing. Recruiting numbers are up because recruiters prey on the poor. Guess what? We have a hell of a lot more people poor now, so yeap, numbers are up!

I would really love to see someone from the Trump administration actually answer a question once. Every answer they give is just dodging the question.

5

u/Yommers 14h ago

It's infuriating that congress just lets these clowns ramble about unrelated shit and deflect instead of answering a question. If they don't answer clearly? Press them. Don't just say "OK moving on." That's how these fuckers win.

3

u/JoonHool44A 21h ago

This is the goal. Bankrupt the country so corporations can take over completely.

How much more can this guy suck trump's incredibly tiny penis?

Are these people just utterly unable to answer the questions put before them?

3

u/razrman 20h ago

he is an idiot, but the Democrats are completely feckless and weak and they just look stupid because they don’t know how to counter the bullshit and the lies. Every time he lied to her she just said “well let’s move on”.

3

u/romans171 20h ago

And why can’t congress pass a law to find subpoenaed speakers in contempt if they don’t answer the question? That would only benefit the public. If they claim it would harm national security then the answer would be privately reviewed. If it fails that test then the speaker would be sanctioned. I hate that ppl are allowed to just say nearly whatever when speaking to congress.

3

u/Educational_Dust_932 20h ago

I don't understand the point of hearings like this. They never answer the question ad it seems they don't have to.

3

u/drood420 19h ago

Is this mofo capable of not being condescending 100% of the time? Every fracking answer this asshole gives is in the guise of Biff Tanner.

3

u/MEOWS_R_RAD 18h ago

I do not understand why we are still pretending that anything these utter fucking imbeciles babble about has value.

The government is run by a demented child rapist and those pathetic enough to bow to him. Nothing more needs to be said about any of these motherfuckers.

3

u/Inevitable_Spread365 18h ago

Hegseth does not know how to tell the truth. so no matter what answer he gives, it will be a bunch of mixed up words that really add up to nothing because when they’re caught with their hand in the cookie jar, they have no idea what to say so they make stuff up off the top of their head and just start spitting out words that are absolutely worthless. Like Pete Hegseth he’s absolutely worthless.

Fucken complete imbecile. Immediately blames Biden and glazes Trump right as he starts talking.

These questions are over his head and it shows. What an incompetent twat.
