The 71,000 subscriber update

Hey folks,

Just posting to give a brief rules update. Nothing should change for most folks, but there are a few changes/clarifications to highlight.

  1. The no advertising rule has been changed to include market research and "try my app" type posts.

  2. There is a new rule about staying on topic, this is mostly to get rid of the small number of "enhance my video" type posts.

  3. The new rule about being accurate in your communications is mostly to discourage regurgitation of incorrect information and hearsay. Nobody is going to hit you upside the head with a copy of ST 2110-20, but there is also only so many times you can say "Blackmagic bad" or "you need a boundary clock for Dante PTPv1". If you're trying to help somebody and you aren't 100% positive about what you're saying, then just qualify it as such.

  4. AI generated content is now banned, except for translation purposes.

As always, if you have content you would like to share and it would ordinarily break one of the sub's rules, don't hesitate to reach out for an exception.

And don't forget to join the Discord either. https://discord.gg/ctKKpK8

Christie LWU701i's projector repair - white rust

We have 2 LWU701i's in stock with 'white rust'. Can this be repaired and for what cost? We tried removing it on the metal body and that works, but now we see that the optics are damaged as well So at this moment we won't try to fix it ourself (afraid to damage optical stuff).

I just sent an email to our local repair and they will check with Christie.

Thanks for any advice.

Wireless Tally from a Ross Switcher

I need help finding a solution to get some sort of wireless tile light working. I want to go with the Holland Tally system, but I can’t find any documentation on if it works with a Ross switcher.

Has anyone been able to get back to work?

Does anyone have a wireless tally system coming out of their ross?

Looking for Miranda Media Conversion Suite (MCS) / Animation Builder for LGK-3901

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for the original Miranda Media Conversion Suite (MCS) DVD/CD or the installers for Animation Builder and/or Xplorer, compatible with the Miranda / Grass Valley Densité LGK-3901.

I need to create and upload a .OXT logo file to an LGK-3901 logo inserter. According to the documentation, these applications were only distributed as part of the Media Conversion Suite (MCS).

If anyone still has the original installation media or can share a copy of the installers, I would greatly appreciate it. Any compatible version or information on where to obtain it would also be extremely helpful.

Thank you in advance!

CCS/MUSICAM USA RoadWarrior LC

Hello all,

I found a used portable audio codec, the Roadwarrior LC from CCS that I might need for a project, but it look like to get it configured I need a software, the CCS Network Management. CCS or Musicam seem to have been out of business, I was wondering if anybody would happen to have this software ?

Thanks

How are you detecting whether a player actually enters LL-HLS mode, vs the manifest just signalling it?

Been down a rabbit hole on this. Reading LL signalling from the manifest is easy (EXT-X-PART, PART-HOLD-BACK, CAN-BLOCK-RELOAD), but that only says the stream offers low latency, not that the player engaged it. I keep running into players that quietly fall back to full-segment fetches on a properly LL-signalled manifest, which reads as "LL" in tooling but plays like standard HLS.

The most reliable signal I found is at playback, not in the manifest: hls.js only sets a real targetLatency, keeps a populated partList, and does blocking playlist reloads when it truly engages LL. A FRAG_LOADED carrying a part is the clearest "yes, it's pulling partial segments" proof.

How do you all surface this? Do you distinguish "signalled" from "actually engaged" in your QoE/monitoring, or just trust the manifest? And for LL-DASH, what's your equivalent (dash.js getCurrentLiveLatency + catch-up state)?

Ross - USB drive lifecycle

Anyone who has spent time in the Ross switcher ecosystem knows that the USB external storage is load-bearing on Carbonite, Ultra and Ultrix Carbonite switchers. From still stores to clip player to set backups to debug logs. There have even been some bugs associated with excessive logging to USB taking down whole systems. That said, what best practices have you developed/adopted on best-of-breed media, and lifecycle (interval) since no flash media is truly forever. Thanks!

An anti-piracy detection engine/pipeline for a DRM-protected video streaming platform?

We run a multi-DRM streaming platform for B2B customers and want to catch piracy attempts using behavioral analytics. Every vendor page talks about "behavioral analytics" and none of them say how it actually works, so I'm stuck at the blank-page stage.

Right now I've got data from our license server (device info, client info, timestamps of license requests, ...) and CDN delivery data (active sessions per user, play time, pause time, completion percentage, duration, resolution, ...) , and we could instrument the player if that turns out to matter. Three things I can't figure out:

  • What would you actually collect? I have the obvious stuff (user, device, session, IP, content, timestamp), but I suspect the useful signals are ones I haven't thought of yet.
  • How do you form a baseline? Meaning, how do you decide what normal looks like for an account before you're willing to call anything suspicious.
  • Does this need ML, or are rules and thresholds enough? My instinct says start with rules, but I don't know if that's naive or if the ML stuff is mostly vendor marketing.

I would also appreciate it if you could link me to any online resources.

Obsbot Tail 2 - What's the catch? So good!

I'm new to the world of PTZ's. I'm much more comfortable with low- to mid-end Cinema cameras and mirrorless hybrids.

Boss had me set up a live shopping show with a multiple BirdDog X4 Ultras. I would have much preferred Canon PTZs to match my cinema cameras, but I didn't want to push for expensive PTZs so early in my learning curve. And I've NEVER been happy with any part of the BirdDogs, especially the image.

Fast forward to today. I just got an ObsBot Tail 2 to test. I'm completely blown away. The image is light years better than the X4's, it has internal recording, and it can natively rotate the sensor/lens to switch from horizontal to vertical. And it's only like $1300 for the combo with NDI activated plus the remote.

This really seems too good to be true. Is there some huge flaw I haven't found yet?

Looking for a Bluetooth adapter to plug into my comm pack and connect to my Bluetooth headset.

I know JK Audio used to make the BlueSet M4/M5/F4/F5, but they seem to be pretty hard to come by these days.

Anyone have any leads on a solution?

Looking for Sierra Video Pro XL 88V5S / Kramer VP-88XL software, firmware or recovery information

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone here has experience with older Sierra Video routing switchers.
l've recently acquired a Kramer VP-88XL RGBHV
Matrix Switcher, which I've confirmed is essentially a Sierra Video Pro XL 88V5S platform.
Unfortunately, the unit is stuck in a boot loop.

The LCD displays:
Power-On Tests Successful!
Starting application...

It then immediately resets and repeats indefinitely.

I’ve already:
-Confirmed the VP-88XL is based on the Sierra 88V5S platform.
-Installed TyLinx Pro (Admin Utilities, Console Designer and Console Player).
-Read the Pro XL manuals and serial protocol documentation.
-Contacted Kramer UK, who confirmed TyLinx Pro was the last compatible software but that they no longer have the software or any firmware available.

I’m looking for any of the following:

- Original Software Disk (CD/ISO)
- Firmware or software update files
- Bootloader or recovery procedure
- Service documentation
- Internal DIP switch recovery information
- Anyone who has repaired one of these units

If you own a working Pro XL router (84V5S, 88V5S, 1204V5S, 1208V5S, etc.), or have any archived software or documentation, I’d be extremely grateful to hear from you.
Even if you only have the original installation CD or can image it, that could make the difference between repairing and scrapping this unit.
Thanks in advance for any help!

My LAN, Their Internet

This is probably a stupid question or better off in a different sub, but considering the application I am hoping someone here has a good answer.

I am a solo [read: budget] video engineer planning on running a small mobile rig broadcasting at small venues. I have a LAN set up on my own router which handles my switcher, IP cam controls, etc. I have already set everything with its own static IP. A venue has offered me an ethernet drop for internet but their modem only has one WAN port which is being used by their router.

I know I have the option to get a cellular modem, but I'd rather not pay the cost if I can just use the venue's internet. Is my best option to drop DHCP on my router and connect to theirs?

Troubleshooting Marshall Cv504

Post image
6 Upvotes

I bought a used Marshall CV504 on eBay and then got a Blackmagic bidirectional SDI converter and an SDI cable off a rental company's used section to convert the 504's feed to HDMI. I plugged everything into power, plugged the SDI into both the Marshall and SDI in on the converter, plugged an HDMI cable from the HDMI out on the converter into a Feelworld monitor(and I tried plugging into an ATEM mini as well) but it wouldn't output any signal even after I tried resetting the Marshall to default settings. The menu on the Marshall's output wouldn't show either. I tried multiple HDMI and SDI cables and same thing. I was just wondering if there was anything I'm doing wrong or if the Marshall is more than likely broken
