Finally tried the plant-based Lurpak

£2.75 on Nectar makes it the same price as flora buttery so thought I would finally give it a go.

Seems very realistic to me, maybe a tiny bit better than the Flora options even. But its too small a difference to justify the usual price of £4.75, especially when Flora buttery is under £2 half the time with nectar/club card etc.

Misfits Protein Bar Brand Not Vegan

So I recently found out that Misfits, the protein bar brand, has released a new stuffed product in the US that contains whey protein and bovine collagen! Their classic bars are still plant based, but I know a lot of people will feel uncomfortable still supporting them!

Guys, I’m so tired 😪

Like, physically, clinically fatigued. My bloods came back in April as being iron deficient. My serum ferritin was at 10. Since then I’ve been taking the standard ferrous fumurate prescription. Had a few days where I’ve felt better, but these past two weeks have been so, so hard and discouraging.

Posting here as I’ve only just had a look into people’s experiences on Reddit and come to the realisation that 10 is actually very, very low indeed. And my hypothesis is that it is diet related - of course, I’m vegan, but early this year especially my diet had slipped. I was being much less thoughtful about what was on my plate. I also have IBS which is fairly mild these days but I do get the odd flare up, which I can’t imagine helps.

Anyway, onto a lighter note, I’m really seeking some success stories 🙏

Have you recovered from iron deficiency on a vegan diet? What are your top recommendations?

SHOULD I GIVE UP COFFEE?! 😱** **(Please, God, say it ain’t so. Disclaimer: I take my ferrous fumarate at least an hour after my morning coffee).

Help with milk for oats please

So, I am in Tesco right now, standing next to the plant based milk section, but I realised that on boiling some of them might curl.

Which do you use for oats? To be precise, I boil milk, then add oats.

Please, help me............

Edit: someone took time to downvote every single comment. Thought that is an interesting information. I know you needed that.

Help with petition to stop pet show allowing small, prey animals!

I hope this is okay, please feel free to delete or inform me if it isn't!

First and foremost, I am vegan and have been for 8 years now (myself and my friend went vegan overnight after seeing slaughterhouse footage, though we were already huge nature/animal lovers).

Anyway, where I live there is an annual event that includes a pet show, where people register their pets to be picked as a winner, and while I disagree with the entirety of the pet show, the worst part is that they are allowing rabbits and other small, prey animals to be registered too.

If anyone here has the absolute pleasure of looking after rescue/adopted rabbits, you will be very aware of how sensitive and easily startled they can be. They are not meant for loud, busy family shows far from the comfort of their home. They will be already severely distressed being taken from their home, but then to be sat in a hot, busy pet show, full of children and dogs and being picked up, it is just cruel!

In an effort to not go on a year long rant here about rabbits and their welfare needs, and how unbelievably immoral this pet show is, I made a petition so I can show the event organisers that rabbits and guinea pigs, etc., do not belong in a pet show!

Petition link (change.org): https://www.change.org/stoppreyanimalsinpetshow

Please can I get help with some petition signatures? I don't have much of a social media presence and only two friends, so I don't really reach many people! If you have any advice on how to better promote it or lay out the information in the petition, I'm all ears, though please be aware I am physically disabled so cannot go out campaigning and such.

I have reported this to the SSPCA but they haven't answered my email, as I think you have to call them about welfare issues, of which I cannot do (disabilities).

Thank you in advance!!

Disappointing OMV cookies

EDIT: I think I’m the issue here haha, a number of people have said they love them. dont take my word for it !!😅

was super excited when I saw these reduced in my local Asda. I usually love their OMV range (their pizza is beaten only by One Planet Pizza) but these were dry, a hint of cherry/almond but kinda tasteless and disappointing?!? Kinda giving cardboard vibes... :(

Wedding Planning

Hello everyone!

Exciting times here, planning a wedding for 2028.

We are hoping to have a fully vegan/vegetarian wedding. The main issue is that a lot of venues don’t allow outside caterers and the plant based meal is just an afterthought.

So with that, I would appreciate any recommendations please!

  1. Venues with good food options, preferably who would let us not serve any meat, around Yorkshire and Derbyshire
  2. Venues in those areas that allow outside caterers
  3. Any catering companies you’d recommend.

Thank you!

Worcester Hospital

If anyone has the misfortune to need to be in this hospital, let me tell you that you are not going to starve. They have a full vegan menu. I had a spicy bean casserole with wedges and veg (quite nice) baked vegetable provencale with veg and potatoes (a bit bland but edible). A couple of times I had a salad which had rocket houmous, endamame, kidney beans, chick peas and falafel (tasty so I had it twice) and a cauliflower and butter bean curry with rice. Sandwich was onion bhaji which was ok. Toast and jam (no spread though). There were a couple of other things too. Puddings were vegan jelly (orange or raspberry) alpro pudding, apple purée and maybe one other thing.

Overall, not bad.

Review of the pizza express bottomless pizza deal

afaik tomorrow and the day after (22nd + 23rd July) are the last days of this deal, so if it appeals to you, get to it soon. Also idk if every branch/chain/whatever is participating.

I won't repeat much of the basic terms and conditions, but you do need to make an account on their site and generate a QR code before you start. One QR code is enough for a group, although obviously each person in the group will pay their own separate fee.

It's £12.50, you get 90 mins from your first order, that 90 mins includes cooking time and time to get served which sounds like a scam but in practice it's probably not going to be your bottleneck unless you're a professional eater. afaik each person is only allowed one QR code but the phrasing suggested nothing stopping e.g. two people going two nights a row with person A supplying a QR code on night one then person B supplying a QR code on night two. Sign and site says 6pm-9pm, but they let me make my first order at 17:45, no idea how strict they are with the 9pm ending, and it depends on the mood of the staff regardless ofc. SORRY, correction, you must START before 6pm, idk how I fucked that up, genuinely didn't realise until someone corrected me just now in the comments. Makes a lot more sense in hindsight, they already get decent business after 6:30pm and want to fill the empty store before 6pm.

Overall you won't have any issue having enough time to order and eat ~3 pizzas unless you're a very slow eater or have a small stomach, which at that point it's clearly a good deal imo, even two pizzas wouldn't be terrible by any means.

However, they ran out of vegan cheese so I "only" got 4 pizzas, so ask specifically if they have enough for e.g. 5 pizzas, before starting, if you really think you can eat that many (or going with multiple vegans).

On that topic: 4 pizzas was more than enough, if I had a 5th, which I nearly did, even cheeseless, I'd very unlikely enjoy it. The salt alone was killing me, figuratively and (to a degree) literally.

If my stomach was bottomless and they hadn't run out of vegan cheese then maybe could have had 6 pizzas, maybe some of the last one would go in a takeaway box (which is allowed "if not abused" whatever that means).

So yeah, for me, a very large stomached person, the bottleneck was easily my stomach, I left 20 mins before my time was up. I was patient with ordering, you're allowed to order a new pizza when your current one is over half way eaten, but all but one time I'd finished my pizza and usually had to wait several minutes to grab the server's attention as I picked a poor choice of seat and they were a little busy.

You also get unlimited dough balls, which they can do vegan if you ask for it, they're meh, if you're hoping to maximise your enjoyment I'd recommend not getting them and just enjoying the vegan pizzas until you're full to brim, no room wasted on dough balls.

There are two vegan pizza options, a margherita and a giardiniera.

tl dr even on a busy night where they ran out of vegan cheese and the servers weren't "on the ball" (in enabling my fat ass) I still easily fit 4 pizzas into the time slot with change to spare, which was definitely a good deal, so I do recommend it and I recommend not getting frustrated at the thought that the slow service is pissing away your time because time is very unlikely your bottleneck.

Cookbook recommendations!?!

TLWR: vegan cookbooks for cheap and quick meals for one

hi all, so I’m relatively new to veganism, and after a recommendation from someone on here, I started following Soph’s plant kitchen on insta. I love her page as I need quick and cheap meals for just me (student living alone) and looked at getting her cookbook.

unfortunately it’s a bit out my price range atm (again, student😅). I usually like supporting creators like this so would want to buy directly, but it’s £20 and even on Vinted there’s only one for sale which is £15+postage.

I’ll probs check some charity shops but does anyone have any specific recommendations for cookbooks like this? A few I’ve seen on vinted are:

- 20 min vegan by Calum Harris

- two BOSH ones (Healthy vegan and another just called BOSH with black cover)

- THUG Kitchen

- 15 min vegan by Katy Beskow

any suggestions would be massively appreciated! Thanks in advanced 🌱💚

What vegan meal have you made or had recently that you were proud of, or just really hit the spot?

Photos encouraged. It doesn’t need to be anything amazing, it could be your best version of a recipe you’ve been developing, something you paid top ££ for, or it could literally also be a depression meal that you were just proud you got out of bed to make. I would like to see, please!

Wetherspoons vegan breakfast Lurpak spread dilemma

Thumbnail
gallery
109 Upvotes

When travelling I enjoy tucking into a Wetherspoons cooked breakfast - which is always exceptional value for money.

I have found as a rule of thumb that most city centre Wetherspoons are fantastic in providing the Flora vegan butter spread as default. However whenever I've visited more rural, provincial locations (Peterhead and Carmarthen for example) they often just provide the Lurpak spread that comes with every other breakfast type.

In this case I'm not too fussed as I just use the toast to mop up the beans but I thought it is interesting to try and map out which Wetherspoons provide vegan spread as standard without having to trouble the overworked staff.

Have you ever asked the staff to change the butter? If so did it work?

Happy travels everyone 🙂🌱

After being vegetarian for many years I’ve decided to commit to veganism :)

Chickpea flour omelette with peppers, red onion, mushrooms, smoked tofu (Aldi), coriander, sriracha, tomatoes and gherkins.

This was so filling I’ve saved the tofu and some of the omelette for another day! So delicious and easy peasy.

So as a big fan of cream cheese and ham on toast i have tried pretty much all the major ‘spreadable cheeses’ available to vegans. My favorite is the violife spreadable, philadelphia is a close second.

In the interest of trying something new, I bought the M&S version today.

Having tried it on crackers - what on earth is going on here?? It tastes like greek yoghurt not at all like cream cheese (in my opinion). I can’t imagine who would want to eat solid yoghurt on bagels or in a sandwich.

It’s the first product in about 5 years I’ve thrown out brand new because I couldn’t bring myself to eat any more or even ‘put up’ with the taste for a while.

Did I get a bad batch or has anyone tried this and liked it? Usually I understand there’s appeal for versions of products that are a bit ‘different’ but I am genuinely baffled trying to imagine someone wanting to eat this in the intended way.

Let me know if I’m going crazy 😅

Do you guys think these are still okay to eat? They're the ones that are from the frozen bag and they've defrosted in the fridge for about 2 days. Though I'm not sure about the look they smell normal.
