Hello everyone! I am working on a personal project to design a utopia, and I am looking for some opinions from others! The only rules are that it must be monetarily no more than what is currently available, no changing around where countries are, and no using something not already created. As someone who is passionate about improving our built environment and urban sprawl problem I have spent the last 10 years brain storming. I recently had this sub suggested so I’ll summarize my vision for a utopia although it’s more about building what we know works.

Walkability, bike infrastructure and Ada compliance all work together hand in hand. Basically dense urban cores of a utopia can’t have cars at all on the surface streets. Although trash pick up, deliveries and emergency vehicles would still need a street to drive on which could be in a subterranean level below the walkable street.

There could also be a Schweeb transit system above the city streets for quick transportation of people and cargo. Look this up it’s a very interesting concept. Tom Scott has a good video about it on you tube.

Walkable medium to high density urbanism is where most people want to live already and it has innumerable health and safety benefits and with next generation mobility on 3 different levels congestion in urban cores would be non existent.

There also needs to be access to abundant local organic food, there needs to be maintained public food forests, affordable small farm lots, and commercial scale ethical organic farming to feed to populations.

Where and how could this be built? Well I think in places with cheaper land like the Midwest, abundant concrete resources and water access. This narrows down the geography to eastern nebraska. Building a utopia mega city with integrated permaculture and organic agriculture would actually be better for the environment than traditional commodity farming that the land is being used for now.

Instead of making one massive city it would be a fabric of cities across eastern nebraska each with a population around 200,000 people. Each would have a high rise core, a 5 story building ring around the core, a 3 story ring, then a ring of small community agriculture plots, then the commercial permaculture system and wind turbines around the perimeter. It could all fit into about 10 square miles.

There are also lots of small creeks in Nebraska vetting through the rolling hills of the eastern part of the state. There dams can be built flooding just agricultural land and creating lakes for the cities to have near by. The lakes can have around the shallow shore lines aquatic plants planted in gravel with air pumps pulling water through the root zone to clean it and then gets oxygenated by air pump.

There are hundreds of small creek perfect for this and plenty of space between them. If we built 100 of these cities we could house 20 million people.

For energy diversification is the name of the game with solar and wind everywhere we can fit it. Then trash incineration with carbon capture. Plastic pyrolysis plants. The amount of cattle required to meat our local organic dairy and meat demand would be significant. But we could use the manure from the cattle in biogas digesters and produce bio methane.

Combined heat and power generation using our bio methane in turbines would produce a base load electrical supply. Steam generated from the heat could be piped around the city for providing heat and driving thermo acoustic heat pumps for air conditioning.

We could also have large photo bio reactors producing algae year round from the nitrogen rich platte and Missouri rivers. The algae could be processed using hydrothermal liquefaction to produce crude oil and nutrients for our bio digesters.

With all these energy generation sources spread across all 100 cities we would have more energy than we would know what to do with.

Not as a joke project — as a genuine attempt at something universal and secular... Utopian

The core idea: 12 months of 30 days, 5 weeks of 6 days each. Every month identical. Every week intentional — the six days are named for what they're *for*: recharging, preparing, doing, finishing, reviewing, playing.

The year starts at the winter solstice. Month names are based on light — the year is experienced as a single day, from midnight (solstice) to noon (summer solstice) and back. Between months, there are 5 special days called **Mirors** — threshold days that belong to no week and no month, tied to the solstices and equinoxes. Every four years, a sixth Miror appears: a day dedicated entirely to reviewing the past four years.

I also layered in lunar phases for each day, just because.

The deeper question I kept running into: can a calendar be truly universal without being imperialist? The attempt here is to get there through *subtraction* — removing gods, emperors, and saints rather than replacing them with new ones.

I've been developing a philosophy called Homogratism. The core idea is that no human stand above or below any line— no one is "rich" or "poor".

In this society, we remove the concept of 'earning' survival through money and replace it with 'ensuring' survival through giving. If everyone is an equal, and everyone gives what they can, the hierarchy that creates bullying and poverty disappears.

I want to know: Do you think a society can truly be a 'Utopia' if it still uses money to rank human value? Or is true equality only possible when we stop 'buying' our right to live and start 'giving' it to each other?

I'm looking for fellow visionaries to help me refine this in my community.

A short reflective essay about the tension between utopian striving for new worlds and being tethered to the one that currently exists.

Building anything new cannot happen in a vacuum separate from history or the rough ground of the present. Utopia must be articulated in the terrain of what currently exists. This was a conundrum that animated much of Ernst Bloch's work on utopia, hope and possibility within a materialist frame.

Here I take up this question in a more exploratory mode. I consider friendship, political organizing and academic knowledge production as potentially utopian gestures that are always at risk of getting reabsorbed into the mundane reproduction of everyday life.

Because deviance from received forms of being/thinking is readily perceived as pathological, I playfully call this utopian figure, who imagines new forms of life, the neurotic hero/ine.

SS: This proposal argues the need for a constitutional convention to completely rewrite the supreme law of the American land. By bringing together executive direction, intellectual firepower, and the public at large, the theory is that we can design the best Constitution in the world. In other words, this is a recipe for creating a utopia.

Always good to see Kim Stanley Robinson talk about his work, especially the relationship between science fiction and utopia.

I've been thinking about this for a long time, and personally have come to think that something like utopia is possible, but only if we succeed in creating (or facilitating the creation of) something that is smarter than us. A form of intelligence that isn't hampered by our limitations and that didn't evolve under the same evolutionary pressures that drive us. What do you think? Is this overly pessimistic? Or is my hope for a benevolently-oriented superintelligence overly optimistic?

Not just in terms of technology, but also when it comes to culture, how folks behaved back then vs now, mannerisms ect.

I'd want the tech we have now, but have it to where things were built to last like it was back then. I feel like we have too many laws nowadays, too. I always felt spirituality should play a bigger part in folks' lives in general and as Tesla mentioned, studying non physical phenomena would result in us becoming way more advanced in general, and I liked it back then when folks could not be searched like they were a criminal back then when it comes to going on airplanes.

I do like that there is more freedom among groups like the gays, blacks ect. Sometimes I feel there is too much leniency when it comes to getting hired though. Back then, folks would be qualified for a job, but fail to be hired, because of their race, religion, orientation and gender. And now you have lots of folks who are not qualified at all, but end up getting hired because of their race, religion, orientation, and gender.

I wouldn't want any segregation or anything like back then. Folks should go where they wish. Food should use more natural stuff rather than artificial stuff like nowadays, since food back then was better for us and tasted better, too. Like with McDonald's and other places. I feel like folks valued family more and made more of an effort to use discipline back then then nowadays. I wouldn't want cannabis to be illegal though and want it to be totally legal and used in anyway.

For a utopia, I feel that we need to have a balance, as we always seem to go from one extreme to another, which is why we haven't achieved it back then. We need good aspects of both the past and present to make the best future.

As the title states, if people are living and functioning in a Utopia, what would people still want and desire? There is no purpose in the pursuit of wealth and resources. Hence, would it be the pursuit of the art? What would be the things people would need? I would like to hear your opinions.

I like Epoch Philosophy YouTube channel and was happy this came out a few years ago.

I think it does a good job introducing the thought of Ernst Bloch, who wrote The Spirit of Utopia in 1918, in the ashes of WWI, and his magnum opus The Principle of Hope after WWII.

I see a trend in utopian media that they have something wrong with them. Somehow with videos saying "Is a utopia possible" they quote "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" as if a utopia isn't possible due to this ageless child that suffers. (Cool story, cool concept).

But i mean a true peaceful utopia where people live happy without corruption or dystopia.

Could you make a story like that actually interesting?

Do you ever notice small ideas in movies or shows that feel quietly utopian to you?

Not full perfect worlds, just background systems or assumptions that make you think, “Yeah, that feels closer to how things should work.”

A few that stuck with me: · The Family Structure on K-PAX: The idea of a communal, non-biological family unit that provides deep, chosen support without traditional hierarchy.

· The Public Transit in the Minority Report series: The idea of modular train cars that detach and reattach based on destination.

· The Post-Scarcity Earth of Star Trek: The explicit lack of a profit motive, where people work to "better themselves and the rest of humanity."

These aren't necessarily perfect worlds (the stories are built on conflict, after all), but they contain what feel like utopian fragments.

things feel a little more utopian on Christmas Day everyones a little calmer, a little nicer, less traffic, more thinking about caring, less greed. people seem to realize if just for a day what really matters and that helping out the needy is actually a path to happiness for thy self. it gives me hope, Im never giving up hope. Here are my thoughts on how we could pave our way to a more enriching life in a utopian way through living longer, happier and healthier. Thoughts?

, despite all of my ideas having repercussions, my ideal world would be this. If I was able to restart the world I would make sure religion is taught in schools not trying to teach religion however outline how it affects the world, focusing on just how it affects neither bad nor good, I would make money disintegrate over time so you can't stockpile,I would make education number one priority, I would make shitty jobs like garbage collector a mandatory Factor for anybody serving in Congress, speaking of Congress I would make it anonymous work from home job everyone has to do, I would keep three layers of government possibly even make it an even 10 and then pick the average of their decision, pretty sure this will help with charisma overriding logic, I would do a complete 180 on how AI is currently being used making sure that it is accurate but using simple methods of identifying its failures and then to top it off id make majority of taxes negotiable, you have to pay for roads not healthcare or anything else you don't want to use, because I genuinely hate the fact I pay for war. I would adopt a conservative model of small states communities so that people can decide for themselves probably want to live if they disagree they can move, I would make it highly shameful to push your agenda on someone else, I would not remove religion cuz it's inevitable but I would make each religion a separate holiday you can celebrate one time of year. I would adopt a sort of barter system where you're forced to train what you focus on in order to have reasonable money. I would remove the idea of shiny metal being valuable, I would make longevity my number one priority, the goal in this mythical society would be to share resources the best of our ability and recycle what we have created when it becomes obsolete.

Utopia

I would define utopia very loosely with my prospective project. It would be better defined as "non-dystopian". I am American and watch this country sliding without much opposition into a scenario resembling the Mad Max franchise: societal, economic, and political breakdown with lots of bad actors and very few positive influences.

As a dreamer since I was nice years old, I can't fix America. I see a new Dark Ages at our doorstep. For a while now I've tried to imagine an alternative. I have two: one a near future interim community trying to survive inside Mad Max America. The other: a long term microstate (not a micronation like a kid in his mom's backyard...I did that when I was 11 ;) but an autonomous entity the size of San Marino, or Andorra, or Liechtenstein...

The goal: provide a refuge for those trying to survive, to try to preserve "best practices" and knowledge of a dying society, and to provide a modicum of security and modest prosperity (above just mere survival) in a scary world.

So I wrote a prospectus, a brief description of my own private utopia. I've written other booklets about the long term solution...this is about a near future community. It fits into the large body of lit such as Thomas More's Utopia, William Morris's News from Nowhere, Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia. But it is not a novel...but modest manifesto.

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some utopian short movies or feature films or books (novels and short stories). Especially short ones, because I am a film student and short movies are what I do for now.
More specifically, I'm looking for utopias leaning toward a better social organization (free housing for who needs it, mutual help, collectivity, autonomy) and/or anarchist ideas. It could be a near future with some slight changes from our actual world, or an extremely different world and organization. Preferably a post-capitalist world, or going toward this ?

Any suggestion is appreciated, anything you think might have a hint of what I'm looking for is great !
