Hi everyone, I'm an upholsterer with a diploma as an allround upholsterer. I'm originally from the Netherlands, but I'm not really satisfied with the amount of vacancies in my country. Also I've been longing to work and relocate somewhere else, as I crave new experiences and a work place where I can learn and grow. I also just want to see more of the world, rather than staying in one place forever.

I don't want to start for myself yet, as I graduated two years ago and rather gain experience from true professionals and build up my portfolio. In my area there are too many self employed upholsterers which I can't compete with. I've also noticed location is very important, some shop invested a lot in marketing, but didn't hit off after moving to a new location. I'm 25 years old and I don't have the urge to start my own shop yet, I'm definitely not a beginner anymore, but I would like to gain more experience and strengthen my skills before I ever start such a huge commitment. I also like working together with people and it is nice to ask others for help or help them.

I have 8 months of full-time experience in the automotive industry (had to quit due to highway accident and it was a long commute). Further, the past 1,5 year I have been doing mostly my own projects; furniture and motorcycle saddles. And next to that, I work in an atelier as an upholsterer for a few days.

I was wondering if anyone on this sub is hiring or has any opportunities. I wouldn't even mind coming for shorter periods, travelling and working anywhere seems like something worthwhile while gaining experience.

Even though I graduated two years ago, I had many full-time internships, so technically that makes 5 years of experience.

I’m attempting to replace this flat metal anchor which attaches to the tension springs here and I cannot figure out what this is called or find a replacement?

Any tips on what I might want to search?

I’m really stumped!

I am looking at buying a used car and want to fix up the interior. The leather has some damage that goes beyond standard cleaning and detailing.
Is it possible to touch up or fix these damages ?

We are refurbishing this bright white Scandinavian armchair and footrest c1970. Our grandparents had one which was incredibly comfy (and this one is too).

These photos emphasize the upholstery's dirt and staining. It does not look quite so bad in reality. And there is not much wear. There is an ever so slight musty smell.

The zipper has white plastic teeth and a metal pull labeled Dunlap (which is a US company some maybe this was reupholstered at one point?).

We can't see any tags so can't be sure of the material (99% sure grandparent's chair had a big tag at the zipper). We were thinking it might be a flat-weave olefin? The material is slightly 3 dimensional. The material feels soft on the outside but if we open the zipper the inside feels quite hard.

If we flip over the cushion, it is significantly whiter, is pretty clean, and has all the buttons. But the seat doesn't feel comfortable when flipped.

Fixing the buttons looks easy enough lol.

- Recommendations for cleaning the upholstery?

- Does the frame look like beechwood? How should we clean and treat?

Hi everyone, I’m considering buying a wooden sleigh bed and upholstering it because I can’t find any in a full size, only queen and king. This would be my first upholstery project but I am good with wood and other crafts. Has anyone ever done this? Do you think a highly motivated beginner could do it? Pics of what I’m looking for and the type of bed I would be working with. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2020 Audi A4 with black leather seats, and I've noticed an odd issue with the rear seat.

One section of the leather (right around the split between the seat cushions and near the child seat anchor) has become noticeably harder than the surrounding leather. It also looks like it has tightened or shrunk, to the point that it's pulling on the stitching and creating wrinkles/tension in the seat. The rest of the rear seat is still soft and looks normal.

I've attached a photo. You can see the leather is puckering and seems to be under tension compared to the adjacent section

I don’t think there’s been any flooding/chemical damage.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it possible to fix this?

i have these micro cracks on sofa of my rented house. i want to fix this. some info

1. these are hard cracks happening at one place.

2. under those cracks i can see a fiber cloth mesh. feels like this is not leather.

Can someone help me identify the type of support this chair has underneath the cushion? I can’t figure out what to even look for to find or make replacement slings. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi everyone! I recently purchased a couch off the Internet. And yes, I know less than learned on that one. I went to return it and they basically gave me half off to keep it so I'm trying to see if I can make the cushions a bit more comfortable.

The couch looks beautiful when the cushions are fluffed up. I knew it was a down filling, so I expected to have to fluff things a lot I wasn't expecting it to be so uncomfortable. They said it was filled with a down and foam piece blend.

It's kind of hard to describe how it feels when you sit down. You definitely sink in, but there is no/'minimal support. And it doesn't feel very even when you are sitting or laying down. I took the cushion apart and there are six or eight separate compartments that are filled with this down and foam mixture. At first, I thought I could add a foam insert but that won't work because of the compartments

I've attached pictures of the couch, the cushion, and the stuffing. Is there any way to make the cushion more comfortable? Now I'm thinking just adding chunks of memory foam are my best option. Or maybe I could do a foam cushion and repurpose the down to surround the cushion but given how the casing is constructed I'm not sure that that's an option.

Hello! I'm working on a traditional upholstery project and want to use coconut coir fibre as filling. The problem is that I can't find any suppliers where I live (Ireland) who sell coir fibre marked specifically for upholstery.

I can, however, find coir sold for agricultural or craft use (for example here). My question for anyone who's sourced or worked with coir before: is this essentially the same material, or is upholstery-grade coir specially processed in a way that would make the agricultural/craft version unsuitable.

Hi everyone! I recently bought this chair and I think it’s been reupholstered (done badly imo) and I’m considering restoring/reupholstering it. I’ve done one upholstery project before, but it was a much simpler piece (no tufting).
I’m wondering if this would be achievable as a first tufted upholstery project or if I’m getting in over my head. I love the shape and would like to bring it back with a cleaner, more modern look like the inspo chairs below.

Context: My motorbike came with a custom leather seat. It's old, and I honestly don't like how the sides are painted red. Moreover, the previous owner repainted the red sides because they were fading and now it looks splotchy and the color bleeds onto everything. So I decided to make it a project: I want to paint the sides mainly white, with red and blue lines.

I asked Gemini for help on what steps to take and (aside from painting, masking, cleaning and repairing) said I'd need to strip the old top coat, soften the leather, and then apply a new top coat by the end of it.

It seems like a lot of work (and money) and I don't see anyone doing any of these steps on youtube or anything I've found. I just want to know if anyone here can report on how painting weather- and UV-resistant leather parts is done best and if any of those steps is actually meant for something more specific?

I was hoping to get some advice from those of you that own your own shop... I currently work in banking, I make decent money but I hate it. I hear Microsoft Teams calls in my dreams now. Anyhow, I bought an old boat last year to learn on as I hadnt been a boat owner before. The seats are in pretty bad shape, and a couple are missing cushions - all this led me to this rabbit hole where all of my research points to a massively underserved market in the area, and while I understand its going to take some time to get really good at it, it doesnt seem that reupholstering marine pieces on the most part is terribly challenging. I cant even get calls back from shops around here for basic boat maintenance, let alone upholstery work. I would like to eventually turn this into a multi person shop and focus on scaling it out if it takes off.

Am I nuts for thinking this is a great way to get me out of corporate hell?

I’m covering my headliner and the cutouts for the sunroofs were too much for the fabric to flex into. Looking for suggestions on something to cover it without looking terrible. Thanks in advance
