Academics / Courses is there any hope of me getting any classes i want

Hi, so i'm really stressed about this; I had my orientation set for the last date, but my flight got cancelled and I was put on standby for the only other flight in my area going to msp (even connecting flights were canceled; there were tornadoes in my area). I didn't make it onto any flight so I missed my orientation, which is on the last day. I called OTE and they told me that I could register for Day 1 Orientation virtually, and register for classes online, but my college advising services said no :(. My orientation is now on the 31st of August and I'm really worried I won't be able to get the classes I need/want. I am okay with 8ams; I just want the classes. Just for info: I would be in the honors courses in case those close later or something. Thank you for any and all help!

Academics / Courses MUS 1801W with Matthew Rahaim

is there anyone in music who knows if Rahaim is as bad as people say he is or what to prepare for? the people on RateMyProfessor seem to despise this man and I'm really hoping he's not completely awful because I'm planning on majoring in music and don't want to get a bad taste in my mouth because of a professor. thanks.

Academics / Courses Any CS majors switch majors or do a second major?

I’m one semester away from graduating with a degree in CS but for the past 3 years I haven’t had any luck getting an internship or finding work experience in CS. All I really have under my belt is a CS TA position.

I thought about switching majors back in sophomore year and honestly regret not having switched back then. I’ve kind of lost my enthusiasm for coding over the course of my CS degree. Debating currently between staying in school to do another major, taking a chance in the job market, and doing some kind of graduate degree.

Is anyone here in a similar boat? How hard was it to find a job after graduating in CS with no internship experience? Did you stay to do a graduate degree or another major?

Am I taking too many classes? (CSE)

I’m an engineering major taking:

Honors Calc 3

Chem 1 (and lab)

Physics 1

required CSE course

3 credit lib ed

is this normal? many people from other schools says this is too many classes for freshman fall. I don’t want to drop stuff if it is unnecessary, but I also don’t want to suffer the whole time. Thoughts?

edit: Will a “normal” (not crazy smart) student be able to handle this course load of multiple stem classes? Chem and physics at the same time?

Accused of cheating on online exam

Hi all

I had a zoom call today with my professor that runs an online summer class im taking. They told me they reviewed my honorlock exams and suspect me using "outside information" (eg phones) and will report me to the OCS. They even started our conversation with "I only submit when im 99 percent sure u did it". They say is basis for their accusation is me looking at something other than writing or using that online calculator, not erasing/showing that thing I was writing on (I REMEMBER SHOWING IT ERASED ON EVERY EXAM I TOOK IN THE CLASS), reaching for something behind my laptop, and getting a good grade on one said exam even tho i havent done the past weeks homework. All those things I gave an explanation to and showed them my room setup for context. One thing wanted to say I used a notebook (albeit blank) for calculations despite it being explicitly stated I needed an erasable whiteboard which I dont have. I admitted to that right as it came up and will gladly accept any penalties for that.

I do acknowledge their side and I know I cant make them and yall believe but i did not cheat. I was verryyyyy stressed about getting another bad zero cause I already had one from me not doing one of them for personal reasons. Oh and if i want to go to medschool someday I know that a cheating allegation is the absolute end of it. Im way too scared to risk it.

All that aside, the fact is that they still plan on filing the report and im terrified. What do i do? Has that happened to anybody before? How do i dispute it and does it work? Yall i need advice

disclaimer I know theres a post on here from a week or smth ago thats similar to this one

Chem 1062 Michelle Driessen

Just how bad is Michelle Driessen? The U is pretty notorious for not having the greatest chem department, and from what i've heard (mostly on Reddit and RMP), i should be extremely wary of Driessen. I'm taking her chem 1062 class as a PSEO class and it'll be my first chem class actually at the U. If anyone has the materials from chem 1061 and its lab (such as worksheets, resources, lectures, syllabuses, and rubrics), it would be greatly appreciated as well. I took this class at my highschool through a different college and the teacher was fairly laid back so I am a little worried I may not be prepared for the class.

Apartments / Dorms / Housing Lease Takeover or Spring 2027 Lease at The Marshall

Hi!

I am graduating in December so I’m looking for someone to take over my lease from August 2026 to July 2027, or if you are looking for Spring 2027 housing I can also work with that!

The apartment is at The Marshall in Dinkytown. It is a 2 bed, 2.5 bath townhome style apartment. You will have your own bedroom and bathroom.

You will have one roommate, Jacob. He is an amazing roommate and a very close friend of mine.

Rent is $1209/month, I am willing to pay for a month’s rent as well. Move-In is August 20th, 2026 or if you are looking for Spring 2027 anytime after December!

Let me know if you would be interested!

I'm completely new to the sport, but have been shooting hoops for fun recently. I would love to play with other people, so if any other girls are interested in playing together please leave a reply! (But please be aware that I am a beginner!)

aid

Has anyone gotten their financial aid awards sent out yet? I usually would've gotten an email about it by this time the past two years. I saw the email from the U about how it's been difficult for grants and other things such as international students. I'm wondering if this may have something to do with the delay.

Academics / Courses Anyone who took STAT 5102: Theory of Statistics II with Qian Qin

I'm taking this class with him this coming fall, and Gopher Grades shows that the most common grade is a C- 💀.

For anyone who has taken this class with him recently, what should I expect?

  • What's the overall structure of the class like?
  • Is attendance required or graded?
  • What are the midterms like (format, difficulty, etc.)?
  • Is there a cumulative final?
  • Were there any projects that counted toward the grade?

I'd especially love to hear from anyone who had him the last time he taught this course. Thanks!

Parking options near the law school?

I'm wondering what the best parking options are near the law school. It seems like the closest student contract parking is the West Bank Office Building which is still 10 minutes from the school and costs $419.40/semester which feels insane compared to I think $71/semester for the Universal Transit Pass. I know there's a couple lots near Mondale Hall but I don't think they're eligible for student contract parking. So is the Office Building my best bet? If so I might bite the bullet and take a nasty bus commute over $800 on parking every year for 3 years.

Apartments / Dorms / Housing breaking lease w/h millenium

Hello! Me, and 5 of my friends are currently leasing a house, starting sept 1st 2026, and ending a year from sept 1st. since signing the lease, we have all been warned about how terrible millenium is. I am curious if there are any ways we can break this lease, or if there is anything we can do to end it? Thank you for the help, I have heard that it is likely not possible, not sure if anyone has experience doing this exact thing with millenium. Thanks for the help!

Apartments / Dorms / Housing Millenium Management/MRPG

If you're looking at renting a Millenium property, don't. I wouldnt have if id seen all of these but they used a different company name during all the showings and only changed to millenium when it was time to send the lease.

In the past year at a dinkytown Millenium property: ive had my own car towed from my own parking spot that I pay for and had to pay 300 to get it back, 2 breakins, 1 rock thrown through a window (which was ignored by MM for 3 weeks in -30° weather), 1 problem causing roommate that took the police showing up 10+ times before MM did anything, heater failures ignored for 24+ hours in that -30 weather, infestations (Mice, spiders, centipedes, ants, beetles, flies) all completely ignored by MM, several maintenance requests completely ignored.

Issues with the house: black mold, asbestos, lead paint (that is chipped and falling apart), paper glued to walls and painted over to hide damage, improperly sealed windows, screens with holes, ceiling falling apart in most rooms, major fire hazards (including management-installed space heaters under 1ft to spray foam insulation, sketchy wiring issues (big chains of outlets with no ground wire), loose circuit breakers, holes in siding and concrete that let in bugs and small animals, porch missing support beams for handrails, a Carbon monoxide alarm in a publicarea of the building that was expired by 2 years and didnt get replaced for 4 months, even the bathroom has no fan of any sort.

This just scratches the surface

Academics / Courses Research opportunity as a senior

I haven't had the opportunity to gain any research experience during my undergraduate studies, but I plan to pursue a Master's degree followed by a PhD.

I would like to start building my research experience now.
Could anyone advise me on how to find undergraduate research opportunities? If you have any suggestions, resources, or personal experiences on where and how to search, I would greatly appreciate your guidance.

I’m a comp Ee major.

CSCI 5521 w/ Prof. Boley

Hi! I am a PSEO student at the U right now and I am registered to take CSCI 5521 in the Fall with Professor Boley. I wanted to know how difficult this course is and the value in taking it. I love the intersection between robotics and computer science and I am also taking CSCI 5551 with Professor Papanikolopoulos.

I looked at umn.lol for the grade distributions and it seems like 75% of people got an A in 2024, but I also looked through Prof. Boley's rate my professor and it seems like the class is easy but you don't learn much due to his teaching style. I am looking for a balance of learning the foundation of ML (algorithms, implementation, etc.) while not being extremely difficult. So, if anyone with insights on the difficulty and value of this class could respond that would be great!

Also, I was trying to find some reference course material online and it seems like it has changed a lot. Is this true? Has it gotten easier over the years, or am I looking at the wrong things?

For reference, I completed MATH 2373, 2374, 2283, CSCI 4551, and STAT 5101. Please let me know if you want more context. Thanks!

girl in taco costume

Halloween 2023. I wore a taco costume. On 14th Ave I spotted her. She began to run in which she jumped and locked her legs around me in a joyous embrace. She took a picture with me and was gone as soon as she came. Oh taco girl. Where art thou?
