Typeface or Font Appreciation Took a gamble and it paid off!

I posted previously about a a Royal Model P that I believed with fair certainty was indeed Vogue. I only had a couple very obscured photos of the type-slugs to go by with no way to communicate with the seller. After a few days of being on the fence about this machine and watching the auction clock tick down I just set my bid with confidence and affirmed to myself that no matter the outcome, I would be grateful to receive the machine. So it arrived yesterday and lo and behold it is indeed Vogue! I am so thrilled about this. It totally was not on my radar, but then the opportunity presented itself and here we are. The machine looked pretty rough in the photos, but most of it just turned out to be grime. There is no real rust so I am going to remove the paneling and get going with a very deep clean of this machine and then from there I will need to build a case so overall 10 out of 10. Collecting typewriters has been such a polarizing pleasure in my life. It’s not something where I just enjoy the thrill of the hunt. The whole experience is unbelievably rewarding and the daily joy I feel from each, and every machine in my collection is immeasurable. I feel like I’m pretty close to having a complete collection with very little redundancy. From here, I would love to find an Olivetti or Everest with Simplicitas & lastly an Erika or machines similar with Fraktur~ although I really don’t know where to begin looking for these. That’s all part of the fun though.😅💯

Inspiration Post I am so in LOVE

Her name is Rachel, she's an Optima elite 3.

I got her as a birthday gift from my favourite person in the world (after my mother upset me and caused me to hatch a nefarious plan) and I love her to pieces.

(And her name is Rachel because my upsetti-spagetti move in reaction to my mom was to get me an Olympia Monica (which my favourite person did not know until AFTER she had gotten Rachel for me. It has become... a pattern with us)

Inspiration Post Just wanted to give a shout out and bring some more attention to one of the best Typewriter repairer / enthusiasts out there

Upvotes

Hi all

Just wanted to give a shout out to the lovely couple from:

www.thetypewriterman.co.uk

Spoke to Tom who is gladly going to repair / clean my typewriter for me. Very reasonably priced, very friendly and has even mentioned phoneing / emailing him with any questions or concerns after I get the typewriter back.

Also spoke to his wife for about 15 minutes while I was waiting for him. Also genuinely lovely and a pleasure to talk too. You can definitely tell that for Tom it's a passion and is also happy to pass on his knowledge to others. Which I also appreciate as I know next to nothing about Typewriters myself and just getting into the hobby.

Also, wanted to thank the redditer, apologies can't remember your username "Chris"... You know who you are. Thanks for putting me on to the website that has all the typewriter repair places in the UK.

So definitely can't recommend highly enough.

Hope it's ok to post?
Cheers

Repair Question Hermes 3K - missing top cover

I recently added this lovely Hermes 3k from 1979 (serial # 7518212) with a Techno Pica (S TP) type face to my collection. It seems to be in a good condition and types like butter - BUT unfortunately the top cover is missing!

Any suggestions how / where I could find a fitting top cover? It's my only Hermes 3k so far, so I don't even have a clue what the missing top cover looks like.

Repair Question Makeshift button replacement for carriage? Royal Quiet Deluxe

Thumbnail

I just acquired a 1954 Royal typewriter, and noticed there's a button missing on the left end of the carriage. Any ideas on a makeshift fix for that--something to stick onto the thin metal rod/wire that could be used as a button? I believe this is for variable space control, according to a manual I downloaded.

Repair Question Royal QDL Slipping Left Margin

Upvotes

Only paid $30 for a Royal Quiet De Luxe -- I like the one I have, so I bought a spare -- but the new one has a problem with the left margin slipping.

I'm looking for what to look for.

As I type, the left margin will slip to the right.

It also won't hold (consistently) when I whack it to go to the next line.

It's like a tooth or peg whatever isn't fully dropping in, or is slipping out, or something like that.

Missing spring?

Where to start?

I just recently purchased this typewriter from a thrift store, everything seems to be working alright, aside from it needing new best and ribbon (at least from my very little knowledge Of typewritees). But theres this corrosion on the belt wheels (idk if that's the right word). This is my first typewriter, what exactly do I do? I can include more pictures if necessary. Thank you!

Repair Question Nakajima AE-740 Repair

I use this machine in a professional office. It works minimally, mainly filling in a blank, typing a name in or completing a carbon form. It has a correcting feature that no longer works. I have replaced both ribbons recently and the correction still doesn't work. My local typewriter shop closed during covid and I haven't been able to find any repairers in new england that I could bring it to for repair. Is getting that correction feature working again something I could tackle on my own? I appreciate any advice.

General Question How do I make accent marks with this typewriter for letters like ‘ñ’ and ‘ü’?

I just recently acquired this 1958 Olympia SM3 and I’m typing to figure out how to type umlauts and tildes for writing Spanish words that contain an ‘eñe’ or a diaeresis like the letter ‘ü’, perhaps circumflexes too.

If someone could please leave detailed instructions on how to form these letters while typing, it would be of great help.

My little corner is now perfect for yours truly - it's a mix of typewriter/analog film camera repair desk and also my writing desk.

It still needs some extras but it's gold for now. Can I see your writing/repair area?

Inspiration Post Fixed shift alignment (upper and lower case letters not lining up) on Remington Quiet Riter Eleven with a basket/segment shift, here’s how.

Thumbnail

I had an issue with the upper and lower case letters not being on the same space and couldn’t find any info on how to fix it, I eventually figured it out, so wanted to post how it did it so that future generations don’t have to suffer. It was quite simple actually.

I’ve fixed alignment issues where the carriage shifts, but not where the type basket does. I found a nut and screw on the bottom left that needed to be adjusted. I couldn’t get a wrench flush on, so I used a 7/32 and 13/64 one to kinda swat at it until it turned a little bit, then I was able to turn it with my fingers. Then it was a matter of trial and error, rotating the screw left and right until the alignment was good (or good enough), then I tightened everything back it and viola.

Hope this helps.

General Question Anyone know of any IBM Selectric repairs in Dublin?

I’ve rescued an IBM Selectric 1, I’d like very much to get it up and running again. I have the Selectric II & III, refurbished. This rescue would be a great addition. I’ve been trying to contact Joe in The Typewriter Shop on Dorset St. no answer. I’m not sure if he’s still in business.

Repair Question Remington ten-forty without a Remington ribbon?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’ve had this Remington ten-forty for some time now having received it as a gift. I’ve not done any due diligence on it until now as I use it rarely and it actually types well. The only real issues are that the right platen knob doesn’t work and the platen itself is rock solid but those have never gotten in the way.

Looking at and comparing it with other Remington typewriters of the same model I’ve found that this machine is not using Remington spools of ribbon??! It’s was under the impression Remington machines didn’t work like this from reading online so unless I’m uninformed (likely) it doesn’t work like this? I’m quite confused and am curious if anyone has seen something like this, and more importantly how I might go about actually replacing the ribbon.
